Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

It is my distinct pleasure that this edition of The Warrior Watch serves as the official opening and welcome to the 2015 School Year!!! Family Education Rights and Privacy Act: The strict confidentiality of student “education records” is protected by federal and state law, as well as School Board Policy. The governing federal law is the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which prevents the School District from disclosing personally identifiable information from a student’s education records without first obtaining signed and dated written parental consent. 20 U.S.C. § 1232g(b)(1); 34 C.F.R. § 99.30. Under state law, Fla. Stat. § 1002.22 and State Board of Education Rule 6A-1.0955 serve the same function. School Board Policy 5.50 - “Student Records” affirms the School District’s obligations to comply with those federal and state laws.

FERPA defines education records as those that are: 1) directly related to a student; and 2) maintained by an education agency or institution or by a party acting for the agency or institution. 34 C.F.R. § 99.3. Education records may be recorded in any manner, including, but not limited to, handwriting, print, computer media, video or audiotape, film, microfilm, or microfiche. 34 C.F.R. § 99.30.

SWarrior Newsletter Lake Worth Middle School’s Newsletter, Warrior Watch, is published quarterly to the community. Its purpose is to increase communication and to provide information about school activities, school news and school meetings. Deadlines for Warrior Watch are announced in advance. By efficiently using this publication, we keep parent(s)/guardian(s) up-to-date on what is happening in Warrior Country.

Identification BadgesIn an effort to provide a safer, learning environment we have

provided Identification Badges for our students, free of charge. Each badge has a full color picture of the student, his/her full name, our school logo and a barcode. The badges come with a grade-level, color-coded lanyard. Every student is supposed to wear their badge as part of their school uniform. The badge confirms that a student attends Lake Worth Middle School and is supposed to be on campus. Staff has been directed to stop students without badges and follow up accordingly. This picture I.D not only provides security for our students and staff, it also streamlines school procedures, allowing students to quickly and easily check books out of the library and access their accounts in the cafeteria.

We are asking for your support and cooperation as we move forward with this initiative. Please make sure that your child wears his/her badge daily as part of the school uniform.

Encourage them to keep it in a safe place where it will not be damaged.

Remind your child to be responsible for the badge while he/she wears it at school.

Each badge is made of thick plastic and is intended to be worn on a daily basis, and to last the entire school year. Quite a few schools on our district use the same badges, and have policies in place to monitor issues specific to the needs of their student population.

The first badge and lanyard issued, is FREE, and students are cautioned to be responsible, keeping their badges with them at all times. If a student loses his/her badge or damages the barcode so that it cannot be scanned, they are responsible for the cost of replacing the badge. The cost of replacement is as follows:

Reprinting I.D badge $5.00 Reprinting I.D badge with a new picture $7.00

Replacing Lanyard $2.00

Student Council News1. If you are interested in running for a student council position

for the 2014-2015 school year please pick up a packet from Mr. Grad in room 6-104. The packet will need to be turned in no later than Monday, August 25th . If you have any questions please feel free to speak to Mr. Grad or email him @ [email protected]

2. Mr. Grad is looking for students and parents to get involved in the School Wide Positive Behavior Committee and the School Advisory Council. We meet once a month after school to discuss ways to keep the morale of the school high, to find out what things are currently going happening,and to plan for the future of Lake Worth Middle. If you are interested please feel free to speak to Mr. Grad or email him at [email protected] This is a great way to know what is happening at your school.

Summer Required Reading!All students are responsible for reading at least one novel, and

completing one assignment over the summer break. Language arts teachers explained the assignment during the last week of school, and pamphlets were mailed with report cards that identified the novels for each grade level and elaborated on the assignment as well. There is a novel for each grade level, and all incoming students, new and returning, are responsible for reading the grade level novel and completing the assignment. These titles may be purchased at Barnes & Noble bookstores, or Amazon.com. Free copies are available at local libraries, or copies may be checked out from our Main Office over the summer.

6th graders are reading Lost in the River of Grass by Ginny Rorby;

7th graders are reading One for the Murphys by Lynda Mulllaly Hunt;

8th graders are reading Wonder by R.J. Palacio.

After they have read the book, students will complete a 2-part assignment. Part one is to design a new cover that they feel better represents the novel than the presnt cover. Part two is to create a character web for the 5 main characters in the novel. A character web provides physical descriptions, actions and quotes from the story that create an image of the characters in the readers’ mind.

The Summer Reading Assignment must be submitted to the student’s new Language Arts teacher no later than Friday, September 5, 2014.

Early Dismissal (Professional Development) DaysTo promote significant and sustained school improvement,

schools need time to provide activities that support learning, collegial planning, and other professional development activities for teachers and other educators. To meet this need, flexible scheduling has been implemented in all public schools in Palm Beach County.

On the following dates the students will be dismissed from school at 1:30 P.M.
