The J.S. Paluch Company began in 1913 as Merchants Press on Ashland Avenue on Chicago’s north side. Founder John S. Paluch initially printed church forms, baptismal and marriage certificates, parish newsletters, and assorted fund-raising materials for local Catholic parishes. As the business progressed, he soon added devotional items and increased the company’s

religious selections. His repertoire continued expanding, but John didn’t know just how far his little company would grow!

Following the Great Depression, John’s sons Chester and Joseph worked with the Paluch brothers and sisters at Merchants Press, keeping the company thriving.

In 1942 Merchants Press became J.S. Paluch Company, Inc. (JSP). Parish newsletters became advertising-supported bulletins, resulting in financial support for Chicagoland parishes. In 1952 JSP’s sales manager, Joseph Paluch, and his sons published Christian Art Magazine and moved the company to a new location on Winnemac Avenue. Business continued to grow, reaching beyond the Chicago area. In the early 1960’s Chester began opening regional offices, starting in East Brunswick, New Jersey. Corporate headquarters moved to northwest suburban Schiller Park in 1984 and to the current location in Franklin Park in 2004. Today we have offices across the United States and serve Catholic parishes in every state and Puerto Rico.

During the 1960’s following Vatican Council II’s significant changes, Chester introduced the weekly Missalette®. Guided by numerous clergy, religious, and lay liturgists in the Archdiocese of Chicago, he developed this essential resource for Sunday Mass. Missalette® in hand, parishioners began actively sharing meaningful prayer dialogue, in English, with the celebrant. Today Seasonal Missalette®, We Celebrate®, ¡Celebremos!/Let Us Celebrate! ®, and Word & Song have become important components in parish liturgical celebrations. New worship resources, Rejoice Music Edition and Missal and Misal Parroquial, are the latest additions to the J.S. Paluch’s offerings in this area.

As the role of music grew in the worshiping community, Chester sought ways to add music to JSP’s publications. In 1971 he purchased World Library of Sacred Music in Cincinnati. Today, this company is World Library Publications, the music and liturgy division of J.S. Paluch Company, Inc. WLP offers comprehensive liturgy and music resources and pastoral support services for priests, liturgists, music directors and parish musicians, RCIA catechists and catechumens, youth and young adult ministers, and other parish ministers.

After Chester’s death in 1980, his wife Margaret A. Paluch assumed a more active role in the company. Under her direction, publications expanded significantly. Margaret held a deep commitment to creating awareness of and developing financial support for vocations. She helped establish the National Vocations Awareness Division (NVAD) in 1985 and the Paluch Family Foundation in 1995. In 1994, Margaret was joined by her daughter Mary Lou Rafferty who became the third-generation owner of J.S. Paluch along with her husband William J. Rafferty, our company President. Under their leadership, JSP continues to meet the Catholic community’s changing pastoral needs in an ever changing economy. The Rafferty’s have worked hard to stay current with not only the church’s needs, but to also provide the newest technology such as online tools and support for customers.

J.S. Paluch remains a family-owned business. In one hundred years of service to the Church, our company has grown from a devotional booklet printer into a major Catholic publisher of bulletins, calendars, liturgical and inspirational music and art, pastoral support products, and worship resources. Our continued service to the Church is more than what we do — it is who we are. Please join us and let us be your partner in ministry.

Mass booklets containing the Latin responses were popular before the Second Vatican Council.

Following the implementation of the Second Vatican Council, the first Monthly Missalette® was published. This new resource engaged parishioners in active and meaningful dialogue, in English, with the celebrant. This is the original copy of the first edition signed by all the participating Paluch personnel, including Chester Paluch.

With the new liturgical guidelines of Vatican II, J.S. Paluch holds a country-wide search for a new sung Mass that will provide quality and ease of singing for the Monthly Missalette®. The Mass that was chosen was David Kraehenbuehl’s “Mass of the People of God/Missa Plebs Dei.”

The new monthly missal Celebrate is published, which later expands into the We Celebrate® program.

Wanting to expand the music repertoire, Chester Paluch purchased World Library of Sacred Music in Cincinnati. This is now World Library Publications, the music and liturgy division of J.S. Paluch that publishes liturgical music and other resources used all over the world.

AIM: Liturgy Planning magazine is available to help music directors plan their repertoire each week. This resource is still available today!

In light of the growing Hispanic Catholic community, Paluch creates a Spanish missal — Misalito Parroquial®.

To expand the music repertoire Paluch and World Library Publications offers to parishes, the company publishes the first edition of the We Celebrate® missal and hymnal program.

Chester Paulch dies on September 14, 1980. Chester’s wife, Margaret A. Paluch (Mickey), assumed leadership of company after Chester Paluch’s death.

The new mark has a more modern version of the Chi-rho, with the “P” also standing for Paluch. The two colors, divided by a strong diagonal, show the forward movement of a company that has been serving the Church for 100 years, and will continue to serve for many more. The new look is contemporary and shows the company’s commitment to keeping up-to-date with the changing face of technology while never wavering in our support of the Church.
