Dear Colleague in Ministry,

For nearly a century, the J.S. Paluch Company has served the Catholic Church and its faith communities. This is more than just what we do. It is who we are.

Our long history provides a strong foundation for responding to the diverse and changing needs of your parish and your parishioners. We take this privilege and responsibility very seriously—our work is a labor of love that inspires our family and our employees on a daily basis.

From the millions of weekly parish bulletins we print to the unique and inspiring content we provide for them; from the hymnals and missals we publish that enhance the prayer lives of so many to the books, calendars, music, and recordings our authors and artists create—we are your partner in ministry.

In this catalog, we are especially excited to announce a remarkable addition to our calendar line for 2012. The J.S. Paluch Company was honored to receive a gracious

invitation from His Eminence Raffaele Cardinal Farina, sdb, Cardinal Archivist and Librarian of the Holy Roman Church, and Msgr. Cesare Pasini, Prefect of the Vatican Apostolic Library (Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana), to create and publish a unique calendar featuring art from the Vatican Library illuminated manuscript collections, along with photos of Pope Benedict XVI and excerpts from his

addresses. We are grateful to them and to Dr. Ambrogio M. Piazzoni, Vice Prefect of the Vatican Apostolic Library, and Msgr. Laurence J. Spiteri, jcd, PhD, Official-in-charge of the Legal Affairs Office of the Vatican Apostolic Library, for entrusting these treasured images and words to us so we can share them with you. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of this special edition calendar will be used to support vocations to the priesthood and religious life, an important part of our corporate stewardship.

We invite you to explore this catalog to discover how we can help you fulfill your mission as a faith community. If you have any questions or need further informa-tion, please contact our Customer Care Department or your local J.S. Paluch Parish Consultant. We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Bill Rafferty Mary L. Paluch Rafferty

If you have an Advent wreath in your household, consider embellishing it, or perhaps a small table as an “Advent altar” nearby, with small images of the saints the Church remembers during this season—especially the ones who are patrons of the people, occupations, and national origins of your household. Choose an activity or food tradition to share on these days.

NOVEMBER 30 - SaiNt aNDREW Apostle, martyr, patron of Scotland. Symbolized by an X-shaped cross. Enjoy easy Scottish shortbread for dessert! (300 degree oven) Cream 1 C. butter with ⅔ C. sugar. At low speed, add 2 ½ C. flour until just blended. Chill 30 min. Pat into two 7-in. circles, place on baking sheet and mark generous wedges. Bake for 30 min. and cool for 10 min. Sprinkle with cinnamon, if desired.

DECEMBER 3 - SaiNt FRaNCiS XaViER Priest, missionary to the Far East. A quick Xavier soup can be made from chicken broth simmered with cherry tomatoes, bay leaf, fresh parsley, and basil to taste. It’s delicious poured over cheese gnocchi or another pasta cooked according to directions.

DECEMBER 4 - SaiNt BaRBaRaVirgin, martyr, patroness of architects. When her pagan father learned of Barbara’s baptism, he beheaded her. An old practice on St. Barbara’s day is to cut branches of witch hazel, a shrub that blooms in December, and place them in a vase of warm water to release their fragrance. (Or use another plant that might be more readily available.)

DECEMBER 6 - SaiNt NiCHOLaS Bishop of Myra, patron of children, pawnbrokers, and sailors. Remember his generosity by baking a big batch of iced cookies. Share with others at home, school, or church. Or hand out candy canes (representing his bishop’s staff) or tangerines or foil-wrapped chocolate coins (representing the gold he secretly gave for dowries for three grateful sisters).

DECEMBER 8 - iMMaCULatE CONCEPtiONPatroness of the U.S. Celebrates how God preserved Mary from sin. Traditionally, fragrant spices are associated with Mary. This simple sugar and spice cookie will make your kitchen smell heavenly! (Oven 275 degrees) Cream 1 C. butter and 1 C. sugar till fluffy. Blend in 1 egg yolk. Stir in 1½ t. nutmeg and 2 C. flour till combined. Pat evenly into greased 10 x15 rimmed cookie sheet. Brush top with egg white. Bake 50 minutes. Cut into squares while warm.

DECEMBER 12 - OUR LaDY OF GUaDaLUPE Patroness of Mexico. Celebrate this vision of Our Lady awaiting the birth of Jesus with a small bouquet of roses (Our Lady of Guadalupe’s sign) on the dinner table or in your Advent wreath. Toast her with Mexican hot chocolate flavored generously with cinnamon and vanilla.

DECEMBER 13 - SaiNt LUCY Virgin, martyr, patroness of gondoliers. Her name means “light” and one of her symbols, a wreath of candles worn on the head, reminds us of the Advent wreath. In Sweden, the eldest daughter brings her parents coffee and cakes in bed before dawn on St. Lucy’s day. Light lots of candles throughout the house!

MakE a PLaN FOR tHE SEaSON

(Matthew 1:18–25) An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.”

Did you know there are five dreams in Matthew’s telling of the birth of Christ? (Joseph has four, the magi have one.) Matthew’s whole Gospel is also in five parts, to imitate the five books of the Jewish law, or Torah. As we discover through all five dreams, obeying God’s will takes courage, dedication, and real love for the people and the mission God has placed in our care. Mary and Joseph obeyed God’s will, and so must we.

Nature’s seasons shape the ways we invest energy, time, and resources for daily living. Sacred seasons likewise shape how we invest energy, time, and resources for our spiritual lives. Advent is the season of preparation, of being attentive. We remember Jesus’ coming in history; we work actively for his coming in our hearts; we eagerly anticipate his coming at the end of time.

Celebrating Advent gives us an opportunity to invite the sacred into our lives. It’s a chance to make time, make an agenda, and make space in our lives for a deeper, more intimate relationship with God. It’s not about piling more daily tasks onto our Christmas to-do list. It’s about giving ourselves and others permission to love God in a renewed way.

MakE tiME• Wake up fifteen minutes earlier or go to bed fifteen minutes later• Give time new purpose; ask yourself, do I squander the precious gift of time

making unnecessary trips in the car?watching television, texting, phoning, surfing the Web?reading non-essential things?

• Spend your extra fifteen minutes of newly found timein brief meditation at bedtime or rising, a gentle entry into or exit

from busy-ness ,saying a prayer, doing spiritual reading,in some charitable work, or perhaps visiting with someone who

may be lonely.

MakE aN aGENDa• Create a brief prayer list or choose one inspiring book.• Peruse the seasonal traditions in these articles for the ones that appeal to you. • Be dutiful in lighting your Advent wreath or using your Advent calendar.

MakE SPaCEPut short prayers (like the ones found in this bulletin) where you’ll see them throughout the day• the bathroom mirror • the back of your cell phone• the visor in your car• your bed stand• your purse, pockets, backpack• your computer screen saver

Our God is so wonderful!See how quickly you can find and circle ten words that describe God in the heart letter trail below.

July 4, 2010Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus told his followers, “Rejoice because your names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:20).

Start at the circle that says “Begin.” Connect the words to make this same sentence

in a way that gets you to the “End.”

February 7, 2010Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

What did Jesus tell Simon, James, and John they would be doing as his followers?

Write the letter that appears on each fish in the blank that matches its number.

You can read the story in your Bible at Luke 5:1–11.

September 5, 2010Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

When we decide to follow Jesus, we need to be sure that we are ready to make the necessary sacrifices.

Jesus said it was like figuring out the cost before building a tower. Add up what is needed to build the tower below.

Circle the number in the money sack if it is enough. Cross it out if it is not.

October 31, 2010Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

Here’s Zacchaeus sitting in a tree. He climbed up it so he could see Jesus.

Jesus had just called to him and wants to come to his house! Find and color the shapes shown here.

August 8, 2010 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary TimeThese texts need to be adapted by each community of faith.

Introduction to the Liturgy of the DayToday as we listen to God’s word, we find that we must learn to wait patiently for the coming of the Lord. Our waiting must be faith-filled; that is, we must set our hearts on the promises that God has made to us. Our time of waiting must also be filled with deeds of service to others. Even the master will serve the faithful servants upon his return, says Jesus in today’s Gospel. Let us pray today to be faithful, patient servants of the Lord.

Dianne Bergant, c.s.a., and Rev. James A. Wallace, S.Ss.R., offer a year of thought-provoking commentary, insightful reflection, and lively discussion questions for the Sunday and feast day scriptures. With Living the Word you and your discussion groups, scripture study groups, small Christian communities, religious education classes, homilists, catechumens, and candidates can explore the scripture readings for each Sunday and feast of liturgical Year A and much, much more. There’s something for everyone here, even suggestions for responses to the scripture readings that encourage you to go out and “live” the word. Allow Living the Word to make a difference in your life.

“The Bible has an essential and indispensable role to play in Christian catechesis.‘Ignorance of the scriptures is ignorance of Christ.’ Catechesis keeps ever in mind the vision of the Second Vatican Council: every Catholic reading, knowing, understanding, and loving the sacred scriptures. The Bible is not just a book to be read and studied. It contains God’s word, which should be the object of our prayerful meditation. As a source of inspiration and spiritual nourishment, the Bible ought to be a constant companion.”

Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed, saying: “Holy Father, I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me. And I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may be brought to perfection as one, that the world may know that you sent me, and that you loved them even as you loved me. Father, they are your gift to me. I wish that where I am they also may be with me, that they may see my glory that you gave me, because you loved me before the foundation of the world. Righteous Father, the world also does not know you, but I know you, and they know that you sent me. I made known to them your name and I will make it known, that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them.”

• Understanding the Word

Today’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles is about the death of the church’s first martyr, Stephen. In this passage Luke articulates an important theme of his writings: that one can depend on God’s sustaining and saving presence during suffering.

Our passage today begins with the immediate consequences of Stephen’s extended speech to the Jewish council. Stephen had been performing miracles and debating successfully with Jews in Jerusalem (Acts 6:8–10). Some then brought false accusations against Stephen and he had to defend himself before the Jewish council (Acts 6:11–15). Stephen’s long speech is filled with criticisms that enrage his audience (Acts 7:2–54). This leads to today’s passage.

While his listeners are still fuming, Stephen looks and sees “the heavens opened and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God” (7:56). This is a reference to Psalm 110:1, that says, “The Lord says to you, my lord, / ‘Take your throne at my right hand, / while I make your enemies your footstool.’ ” In other New Testament uses of this verse the Lord is sitting. Only in Stephen’s vision is Jesus standing.

Stephen is sustained by this vision during the stoning; as they are stoning him he prays, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit” (Acts 7:59). This is the first time that Stephen calls Jesus “Lord,” and it is significant that it occurs after his vision of the “Son of man standing at the right hand of God” (7:56). Elsewhere in the Acts of the Apostles, Luke uses another reference to Psalm 110:1 to prove that Jesus is Lord (2:34–36). This shows that when Stephen calls Jesus “Lord” as he is being stoned, he is still sustained by the vision of Jesus “standing at the right hand of God.”

The first martyr does not die alone. There is for him a sustaining divine pres-ence that saves him through his suffering.

SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Today’s Focus: The Rest of the Story

Today’s readings draw our attention to the prayer of Jesus and the prayer of Stephen, the first martyr. We hear some of their last words. These words, along with the vision from the book of Revelation, remind us that we have a destiny, that God has planned a happy ending to our story.

Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and Stephen said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” But they cried out in a loud voice, covered their ears, and rushed upon him together. They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him. The witnesses laid down their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul. As they were stoning Stephen, he called out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Then he fell to his knees and cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them”; and when he said this, he fell asleep.

The Lord is king, the most high over all the earth.

I, John, heard a voice saying to me: “Behold, I am coming soon. I bring with me the recompense I will give to each according to his deeds. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”

Blessed are they who wash their robes so as to have the right to the tree of life and enter the city through its gates.

“I, Jesus, sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the root and offspring of David, the bright morning star.”

The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” Let the hearer say, “Come.” Let the one who thirsts come forward, and the one who wants it receive the gift of life-giving water.

The one who gives this testimony says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!

the spirit at Workconversion and the rciaMichael MarchalTake the challenge to think outside the box. After decades of ministry as an RCIA team member, Michael Marchal knows the difficult pastoral issues that can arise during the process of Christian initiation. This book focuses on the RCIA as a process for catechumens and baptized candidates, but most significantly, the challenges that face RCIA ministers as well as the entire parish.

Marchal writes, “The goal is not imparting data about Jesus, but rather leading others to a living encounter with their Savior.” Weaving together a sound knowledge of the RCIA, a structure of theory, and a wealth of the author’s personal experiences, this book will lead RCIA ministers to the core of the initiation process and give them the wisdom and tools necessary to lead all to a profound conversion to the Lord.017186 Paperback ........................................ $14.95
