Why did Jesus walk on water to the disciples in the boat? Did he want to scare them? No, his first words to them were "Do not be afraid." While they were being tossed by wind and waves, he showed them that he was not af-fected by the storm. If they had had faith, they might have realized that if Jesus was safe, they would be, too. We too must make that leap of faith, especially when we are afraid. Our growth in faith is not a steady progression. For every two steps forward, we may take one step back. For example, we become ill or wreck the car, and think that God has abandoned us. But isn't that a natural reaction? It is natural to doubt God in times of trouble, but we are choosing to live in the supernatural when we become followers of Christ. Like Peter, we can lose our focus on the Lord. We see someone we love who is gravely sick. We make a serious mistake that gets us in trouble. Faith tells us that though apparently invisible, God is more real than anything we can see. Remember Jesus on the cross saying, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" The Father never abandoned his Son and God will never abandon us. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the dogma that at the end of her life Mary was taken body and soul into heaven. Promulgated by Pius XII in the papal bull Munificentissiimus Deus on November 1, 1950, and celebrated liturgically on August 15, this dogma states that “the Immaculate Mother of God, ever Virgin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven.” In this definition no position is taken on the disputed question of whether Mary actually died, nor are any historical details given. Rather with the encouragement of 98 percent of the Catholic Bishops who affirmed that the doctrine was both possible and opportune, the pope declared the faith of the Church that Mary in the fullness of her historical personality lives now in union with the risen Christ. History: Scripture holds no clear evidence for this belief, although the woman clothed with the sun (Rev 12) is interpreted as a significant pointer. Patristic writings are likewise silent. Belief in Mary’s Assumption first appeared in the sixth century when her feast day, which like the feasts of all the saints and martyrs celebrated the day of her death, (Transitus Mariae) purporting to give details about her death, funeral, empty tomb, and bodily reception into heaven. Then in various Eastern churches and by the mid-seventh century in Rome, Mary’s main feast day became a celebration of her bodily assumption into heaven. In view of Mary’s salvific mission as Mother of God, it was fitting that she taste death but not that she undergo the corruption of the tomb. She gave bodily life to Christ as it was within her maternal power to do: fittingly, he returned the favor and gave life to her body, as it was within his divine power.
