St. Thomas the Apostle Church

Rev. John R Evans, PastorCrystal Lake, IL / since 1846

My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,May Christ, sent from the Father, guide and strengthen you this week! Here we are. My last weekend as pastor of St. Thomas. Someone told me “Father, the calendar says you were here for three years; it felt like at least ten!” I couldn’t tell if that was a compliment or not… COVID did seem like a climbing a tedious mountain.

Pastor’s Corner

Thanks again for helping your parish and me through the pandemic. May another one not happen again in our lifetimes! My brother priests, Fathers Simon, Fitzpatrick, Tunarosa and now McFadden, also Ryan Nooraee (seminarian extraordinaire!), I will cherish the times that we shared, “sheltering in place,” huddled in the basement during a severe tornado warning. When I hear deafening silence in the Dixon rectory, I will imagine I hear one St. Thomas brother yawning loudly in the bedroom across from me, another one yelling in Ebu on the phone in a room below me, another one in the kitchen telling me about his latest quinceanera, and two young men either quietly praying in the chapel, or loudly joking and smoking cigars on the porch. I write in tears; there will ALWAYS be a guest room in Dixon for you guys!! We have an amazing staff! I wish I could just take them all with me!! I hesitate to name names, but you know who you are!! Those of you that I hired, you will be severely missed. Those of you here before me, your adaptability especially after 17 years of my venerable predecessor, was very comforting and encouraging. Thank you so much! There is one simple truth on which I base every assignment. There is only one Person indispensable to this parish, and He is locked in the tabernacle, and in the monstrance of our beautiful adoration chapel. The rest of us, come and go! “Pray for me, and I will pray for thee, that merrily we may meet again!” (St. Thomas More)

In Christ,Fr. Evans

St. Anthony Can Find Anything — Even You

“Tony, Tony, come around! Something is lost and it must be found.”

Did you learn this one when you were a kid? In my experience there are even a lot of lapsed Catholics — or people who were never Catholic at all — who know that when you lose something, St. Anthony becomes your best friend. Missing keys? Pray to St. Anthony. Can’t find your favorite sweater? St. Anthony. Forget where you parked your car in the mall lot? St. Anth— okay, you get the idea. Whatever it is, large or small, important or trivial, Tony has a reputation for finding the lost things.

It’s a devotion that can seem a little like superstition — witchcraft, even? — if you don’t really understand it. Mumble an incantation to a dead guy and you’re guaranteed to find your sunglasses. But as with most traditions that are old, beloved and effective, looking a little closer reveals the truth of the matter.

When we lose something really important, what do we do? We make the whole household stop what they’re doing to join the search. Having St. Anthony as a friend means you ask him to stop what he’s doing to help, too. And how he helps is by taking the matter exactly where all matters need to go — straight to the feet of Christ.

Here’s the real genius of St Anthony: he takes the most mundane, commonplace occurrence — misplacing socks — into an encounter with the divine and truly all things great and small are gifts from God. He grabs our hand and points to the cross. “That’s what you’re looking for,” he tells us.

In the end, Tony doesn’t really find the lost things. He finds the lost people.

Heart of Mary

Invite you to join us for this online presentation:Poverty: Crushing Reality and Spiritual Gift Poverty is unending and cruel for most people in the world, even for some close by. We will briefly explore what poverty is, and grasp how we, while physically comfortable, are in need and can learn from the poor. The scriptures challenge Christians to see the poor as our own family, commissioning us to put faith into service to end poverty, bring hope and even justice. We can find a new relationship with our blessings. This mini retreat will include opportunities for prayer, reflection and sharing. WHEN: Wednesday June 30, 2021 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. To register, please follow this Link: or http://www.sscm-usa.org/online-programming.html

Patience in All Things St. Francis De Sales said, “Have patience with all things, but, first of all with yourself.” Life has a way of knocking us down or off the path we are traveling. If it is a path that God has called us to, then it will be easier to get back to the journey, but nevertheless, it is difficult. The hardest thing to bear is that too often what we blame on life is really about our own choices or shortcomings. The refrain of many a blues singer sounds something like, “Nobody to blame but me!” What is the Good News? God’s patience is far superior to our own. We do need to follow the words above and cultivate in ourselves a greater sense of patience in all things. However, we should take great comfort in knowing that God’s patience will always be there as we struggle to grow and advance in our life as a disciple. You’re trying to live a stewardship way of life but keep falling onto the side of the road? God wants you to reach Him on the road but will wait for you. You want to be holier and more committed to your faith? God will take what you give Him. The danger is when you lose your patience and stop moving toward Him. You decide that it doesn’t really matter and that what you can offer God doesn’t amount to anything of worth. We must never cease our journey. You and I may get fed up, but our God never will. —Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi

©LPi
