underlying hardware and the apps that appear on the screen. The apps you create rarely talk to the underlying hardware directly. Instead, apps communicate with the hardware through a set of well-defined system interfaces that protect your app from hardware changes.
The Kernel in iOS is based on same variant of the basic mach Kernel that is found in MAC OSX

backing of Google by Android Inc. In 2005, Google paid $50 million for the OS.
Originally the Android OS wasn’t designed for the smartphone market; it was actually developed as a digital camera platform.
All Android versions, with the exception of Android 1.0 & 1.1, are named after confectionary and desserts i.e. Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich and KitKat.
The first smartphone running Android was released in 2008, the HTC Dream it had a sliding keyboard.
The word ‘Android’ means a human with a male robot appearance.
As of June 2016 Android’s app store “Google Play” has over 2.2 million apps to download.
In 2015 there were around 98.5 million Android smartphone users in the US and in 2016 there are 107.7 million.
Facts related to iOS it's easy to forget sometimes that "iOS" is a relatively
recent term. Until June 2010, Apple referred to its mobile operating system as "iPhone OS."
There are 101 million iPhone users in the US Since the population of the US is about 318 million,
that means that nearly 1/3 of the population owns an iPhone.
In 2011, Apple sold more iOS devices (156 million) than all the Macs it had sold in 28 years (122 million).
In order to use the name "iOS," Apple had to reach an agreement with Cisco, which already owned the trademark. Apple and Cisco had also battled for the rights to the term "iPhone.“
As of June 2016, 2 million apps were available in the App Store to download for various iOS devices.
