Officially Dropping a Project: The 4-H Member has until May 31 of this year to officially drop a

project that they are unlikely to finish, thus allowing them to repeat that project next year if desired.

A Project dropped after May 31 will be considered incomplete.

Cake Decorating & Creative Cooks Contests Cake Decorating contest and our Creative Cooks contest will be on Saturday, June 2, at the 4-H Building. Pre-register by May 29. No charge to enter, and there will be ribbons and prizes! Aaaaand the top competitors earn the opportunity to compete at the Colorado State Fair

Contests. Cake decorating contest members must be enrolled in the Cake Decorating project and compete in the unit in which they are enrolled. Creative Cooks contest is open to any 4-H

member. I’ve attached some pictures of previous state fair entries, not from our county, so you can see what it might look like.

Schedule will be as follows: Cake Decorating

Unit 1: Set up: 8:30 a.m., decorating & judging begin 9:00 a.m. Unit 2 & higher: set up 9:45 a.m., decorating & judging begin 10:00 a.m.

Awards: 11:15 a.m. Creative Cooks

Set up: 11:00 Judging begins: 11:30

Awards at completion of the judging. When completed, competitors and spectators will be invited to sample the dishes prepared by the competitors. Competitors are asked to bring extra servings to share. (This isn’t allowed at

the Colorado State Fair.)

At approximately 2:00, we will have a Demonstration and Illustrated Talks workshop presented by former 4-H member and current 4-H leader, Kayla Gray. Please pre-register for this by calling the office by May 29 as well.

The Demonstration and Illustrated Talks contest will be held on Wednesday, June 6, after

4-H Council’s meeting which begins at 7:00 PM. It will be at the 4-H Building, 1595 S. 9th St. in Canon City. Everyone gets a ribbon, winners take home prizes!

COLORADO STATE FAIR

SMALL ANIMAL NOMINATIONS Forms are now available for nomination of Market Rabbit Pens, Market Chicken Pens, and Market Turkeys for the Colorado State Fair for the year of 2018. Feel free to email smallanimal@state.co.us or call 719-404-2027 with questions. These Nomination forms need to be to the Extension Offices by July 5th and postmarked to the Colorado State Fair Small Animal Office by July 13th. Exhibitors may nominate as many as they would like, however, only four (4) pens or turkeys may be brought to the Fair. The Rabbits all need to be born around June 20th in order to be the correct age to compete in the Market Rabbit Division of the fair. The chicks would need to have been purchased and/or hatched by July 4th for the Fryer class competition and the Roaster class would have been purchased and/or hatched by approximately April 11th. In order to show at the Colorado State Fair, fryers must be no less than 8 weeks old; broilers no less than 20 weeks old and rabbits no more than 70 days old weighing between 3.5 and 5.5 pounds. The age requirements for Market Turkeys will be 14 weeks for hens and 18 weeks for toms. Hen turkeys must weigh a minimum of 14 lbs. to show and toms must weigh a minimum of 16 lbs. to show. Both toms and hens are eligible, however, only the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champions will make the sale. No turkey weighing over 30 lbs. will be allowed to show in the market division. For identification, the exhibitor would need to decide what the tattoos were going to be for the rabbit pen and list 4 of them per Nomination. As for the Market Chickens, the exhibitor would need to list 4 Leg Band numbers per Market Pen. These Tattoos and Leg Bands will not need to be in or on the animal(s) until arrival at the fair. All Small Animal exhibitors will be required to sign a “Quality Assurance” form to turn in at the time of weigh-in. Full disclosure of any medications, medicated feeds and/or supplements given to animals exhibited at the Colorado State Fair is required on this form. You may make as many copies of the form(s) as necessary.

County Fair Written Tests

All 4-H members with market animal projects (Beef, Goats, Rabbits, Poultry, Sheep or Swine) as well as Horse projects are REQUIRED to

take a written test covering educational information regarding that species. 4-H members MUST take the written tests at the Extension Office between 7:00 AM and 11:00 AM or between 1:00 PM and 4:00

PM (you may NOT start a test after 4:00 PM) Monday through Thursday between June 4 and June 28. If you need help reading the

test you need to make an appointment so we can have someone help you. Due to staff work schedules, no reading helpers will be available on

Thursdays. Please see the list below that tells by species and unit what you may use as a study guide.

Remember, the written test is one of the sections used to determine Supreme Champions in Market Beef, Goats, Sheep and Swine. Final results of the written tests will be made available after the county fair. In the case of a tie score, the highest score on the following sections will be used as the tie breaker: 1) short answer section, 2) animal identification, 3) matching

section, 4) circle the correct answer section, and 5) true or false section. In the case of multiple scores of 100, ties will be allowed. Written test awards will be presented at Achievement Night.

County Fair Livestock Sale Commission

Reminder, all animals that go through the Fremont County Livestock Sale are charged a 5%

commission by the Sale Committee. The 5% commission will be automatically deducted from

your sale check and you will need to put the 5% amount in your e-Record Book under Other

Expenses. Example: If your animal sells for $1,000 the 5% commission would be $50.00. You

will receive a sale check for $950. You will list the $50 under Other Expenses and $950 under

income. If you have questions please call the extension office or talk to a sale committee

member.

Summer Success

4-H is hard when you are brand new. And sometimes brand-new lasts longer than we think.

We want you to be successful and continue on with us. Watch for some tips coming by email on

how to get through the summer and still like 4-H! If you are a seasoned 4-H family, you may

not need to pay attention. If not, skim through and your 4-H life will be just a little bit easier!

Sometimes they are canceled due to weather or other reasons. Don’t wait until the last few

Family & Celebrate Seniors Day 7:30 a.m. In honor of our Senior Citizens a complimentary breakfast of biscuits and gravy will be served to

individuals over the age of 65 on a first come, first served basis. The Beta Zeta Sorority and the

Fremont County Fair Board sponsor the event. 4-H Ambassadors will be available to visit with

Seniors and offer tours of the fair.

8:00 a.m. 4-H Building opens to the public. Senior Citizen Activities begin in the Entertainment Tent.

9:00 a.m. Senior Breakfast ends.

9:00 a.m. 4-H/FFA Sheep Showmanship judging will begin in the Show Ring. Market Sheep and Breeding

Sheep classes will follow. Sheep Livestock awards will be given immediately following the Sheep

Shows. The public is welcome to watch this event.

9:00 a.m. Open Gardening entries will be accepted in the 4-H Building. Exhibitors having more than 5 entries,

please enter before 10:00 a.m.

9:30 a.m. Check-in for Pee-Wee Rabbit Show will begin in the Small Animal Barn.

10:00 a.m. Family Day Activities will begin at the Fair Grounds. Children will have the opportunity to visit

educational booths and participate in games and other activities. There will be entertainment for the

entire family.

10:00 a.m. Pee-Wee Rabbit Show begins in the Small Animal Barn. Dress a Bunny/Poultry contest will follow

the Pee-Wee Rabbit Show.

Noon Check-in for Open Gardening will close. No entries will be taken after 12:00 p.m.

Noon “Lunch in a Jiffy”, which consists of either a hot dog or a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, chips,

cookie and a drink will be available for $2.50 each.

1:00 p.m. Open Gardening judging will start in the 4-H Building. The public is welcome to watch this event.

1:00-6:00 Colorado Country Music Association artists will perform on the Entertainment Stage. This event is

free for the public to attend.

2:00 p.m. Watermelon eating contest starts in the Entertainment Tent. Family Day activities will close with

4-H/FFA Breeding Goat and Market Goat shows will follow. Goat Livestock awards will be given

immediately following the Goat Shows. The public is welcome to watch this event.

following the Breeding Beef Show. 4-H/FFA Market Beef judging will begin 30 minutes from the

completion of the Breeding Beef judging. Beef Showmanship will follow the Market Beef Show.

Buyers’ Day 7:30 a.m. 4-H Building opens to the public. Cowboy Church will start in the Entertainment Tent. The public

is welcome to participate in this event.

8:30 a.m. Mandatory meeting in the Show Ring for 4-H/FFA members and parents who will be participating in

the Master Showmanship.

9:00a.m. The 4-H/FFA Master Showmanship Competition will begin in the Show Ring. During this

competition the County Fair’s 4-H/FFA Showmen show Sheep, Swine, Goats, Beef, Dairy Cattle

and Horses for the title of Master Showman. The Reverse Showmanship Competition will follow

Master Showmanship. In this competition, the parent of 4-H/FFA members competing in Master

Showmanship will have the opportunity to prove their showmanship skills. The public is welcome

to watch this event.

Noon The Parade of Champions Award Ceremony will be held in the Entertainment Tent. The public is

welcome to watch this event.

3:00 p.m. The Buyers’ Barbeque will be held in the Entertainment Tent.

4:00 p.m. The 4-H Family of the Year and other special awards will be presented in the Show Ring.

4:30 p.m. The 4-H/FFA Market Livestock Sale will begin in the Show Ring.

6:00 p.m. Open and 4-H Fair Exhibits will be released. Open premiums will be awarded when exhibits are

County Fair Entry Information It’s already time to enter the county fair! We need to know what you will be completing. All the

information you need, including entry forms, can be accessed on the web at: http://fremont.extension.colostate.edu/programs/fremont-county-fair/ or

http://www.fremontcountyfair.com. You can find rules, project class numbers, and entry forms on the County website. Remember county fair entry forms are due by July 5, 2018 at 5:00 PM. You may submit your fair entries on line! Go to fremontcounty.fairentry.com and hit

the green button that says “Sign in with 4-H Online” and you will use your 4honline sign-in. If you have any questions, please call our office at 276-7390.

Fremont County Fair Entries Important Notice!

Late entries cause problems with animal stalling, show classes, and general project interview

scheduling so the Fremont County Fair Board has set the following deadline policy. A. County Fair entries may be turned in at the CSU Extension Office anytime beginning with

when the 2018 Fair Book is posted until 5:00 PM, July 5, 2018 at no charge. B. Late entries can be turned in at the CSU Extension Office or in the outside drop-box if the

Extension Office is closed, anytime between July 6, 2018 until 5:00 PM July 12, 2018, 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM, with a late entry fee of $25.00 per project accompanying the entry (no late entries will be accepted without this fee).

C. After 5:00 PM, July 12, 2018 absolutely no entries will be accepted regardless of the reason.

Kids’ Day Help! Every year clubs run activity booths for our very popular Kids’ Day at the Fremont County Fair. This year that will be on Friday, Aug. 3. What will your club do this year? Jody McKean is the

Chairman of that event and she needs 4-H clubs to contact her. For more information email her at jdymckn1@yahoo.com. Help is needed to run the Stick Horse Rodeo! Horse clubs, how about you? Horses provided, no

saddles needed! Face painting? Jewelry making? What’s your idea?

Help! Ambassadors Needed for Senior Celebration Day

It's easy and fun! All that you have to do is assist the senior citizens on Family Day at the

Fremont County Fair. We serve the seniors breakfast, hand out goodies to them, and escort them around the fair showing off all of the projects. You work from 7:30 AM until 10:00 AM on Friday, Aug. 3. A limited number of ambassadors will be selected this year. Call or email the

Extension Office to let us know you are interested in helping.

If you know of anyone who has free handouts or goodies that we can put into the seniors’ bags,

please let us know. We love giving freebies!! For more information, contact the Extension

Office. This year’s Senior Celebration Chairman is Marsha Bouchard.

****Concession Stand Notice****

In the past we have allowed 4-H families to charge concession stand purchases during county

fair. 4-H Council has voted to discontinue this policy. There will be NO charge cards issued for

the 2018 Fremont County Fair. We hope you will continue to support us by purchasing through

cash or check.

Parade of Champions—Dilemma On the last Sunday of County Fair, this year, August 5, beginning at noon, 4-H’ers who have

earned Grand Champion, Reserve Grand Champion or Unit Champion awards for their General

projects plus Dog awards will be honored at a ceremony under the big tent. Our county

commissioners announce and present the awards. (Very nice trophies, plaques or hoodies, paid

for by wonderful supportive sponsors) In the past few years, attendance has been very low.

Awards are packed away and brought back to the Extension Office and we contact people later

to come pick them up. The children and the sponsors are not properly recognized. We believe

that the families may not know they should be there to pick up the awards at the Parade of

Champions. We are going to work on that this year, but please plan to attend!

From our Fair Board:

We still have a dream of building facilities at Pathfinder Park. Plans are made, money is needed! The fair board is planning a silent auction during the Fremont County Fair to benefit

Pathfinder Park. We are asking your help. We would like clubs to either put together a basket with a theme to be donated to the auction, or donate miscellaneous items to be assembled in various baskets. For example, how about a Movie Night basket? A movie, popcorn, chocolates,

fuzzy socks, and a cozy blanket. Or a kitchen basket? Cookbook, measuring spoons, measuring cups, soup bowls, kitchen towels, unique spices. Or a family fun basket? Water toys, volley

balls, snacks, games, sunscreen, bug spray, picnic stuff. You get the idea! Last year’s silent auction brought in more than $2,000! Only a couple things to mention. Because they are hit for donations so hard, please don’t ask

local businesses to donate items for the baskets. Homemade things are great—use your talents! And families can pitch in some cash to buy whatever is put in the basket. Club treasury

funds cannot be used for the baskets. Remember, that money is for 4-H educational and club activities. If you wish to donate items but not an entire basket we have volunteers who will put baskets

together. Please plan to bring everything to the Extension Office by July 19. The baskets will be on display during the last 3 days of the county fair. You can bid on them

then. All proceeds will go to the Fremont 4-H Foundation for the development of Pathfinder Park.

**Attendance Requirements for County Fair**

Eligibility 4-H: To exhibit at the fair a 4-H member must be in good standing, have met the enrollment deadline in Fremont County for the current year and have attended at least 50% of the regularly scheduled club meetings prior to June 29 (see Fremont County Attendance

Policy).

MAIN CLUB LEADERS: Since it is a requirement that a 4-H member MUST attend at least 50% of their clubs meetings to complete their project and to compete at the Fremont County Fair it is

essential that clubs keep complete and accurate records of attendance. Attendance is the responsibility of the 4-H Club Organizational Leader to check the Secretary’s Book and the Official Attendance Roster Sheet each meeting and verify that club attendance has been done

correctly. 4-H Club Organizational Leader MUST initial each month and sign the attendance page verifying attendance for county fair eligibility. Official Attendance Roster Sheet MUST

be turned in to the Extension Office before 5:00 p.m., July 2.

**Fremont County Fair Livestock Sale Information**

Livestock Sale checks will be available to be picked up on or after August 27, 2018. A

stamped thank-you card for the buyer must be brought to the Extension Office at the time of check pick-up, even if the member has previously thanked the buyer in any way. Names and addresses for the buyers will be available in the Extension Office.

**County Fair Livestock Sale Commission**

Reminder, all animals that go through the Fremont County Livestock Sale are charged a 5% commission by the Sale Committee. The 5% commission will be automatically deducted from

your sale check and you will need to put the 5% amount in your e-Record Book under Other Expenses. Example: If your animal sells for $1,000 the 5% commission would be $50.00. You

will receive a sale check for $950. You will list the $50 under Other Expenses and $950 under income. If you have questions please call the extension office or talk to a sale committee member.

**Policy for Livestock Checks**

Due to late pick-ups resulting in late thank-you cards to the buyers, all checks must be picked

up by the exhibitor by October 1, 2018 and stamped thank-you cards turned in. Checks not picked up by October 1 will be voided. Checks will be reissued only after a stamped thank-you card for the buyer has been received by the Extension Office. A fee of $25.00 will be

deducted from each check that is reissued. New checks will be mailed to the 4-H member within one week.

We appreciate the generous support of our buyers and they deserve to be thanked in a timely manner.

4-H Completion Requirements

1. A 4-H member must complete a project this year to re-enroll in that project next year.

2. Completion of a Family & Consumer or General Project requires: A. Be enrolled in the project by the appropriate date.

B. Complete the specific requirements for the project as listed in the Fremont County Fair Book for the current year which includes a completed record book.

C. Member must attend at least 50% of the regularly scheduled club meetings from time they enroll.

D. Do a demonstration approved by your Main 4-H Club Leader. E. Exhibit the project. The project should be exhibited at the Fremont County Fair. If

it is not possible to exhibit at the fair, the member can still complete this requirement by making arrangements with the Fremont County Extension Office to

exhibit at another time and place. The exhibit would have the same requirements

as listed for exhibition at the Fremont County Fair. 3. Completion of a Livestock Project requires:

A. Be enrolled in the project by the appropriate date. B. Own the animal and have it in your possession by the appropriate date.

C. Complete the specific requirements for the project as listed in the Fremont County Fair Book.

D. Member must attend at least 50% of the regularly scheduled club meetings from time they enroll. (There are no excused absences-either they are there or they

are not.) E. Do a demonstration approved by your Main 4-H Club Leader.

F. Exhibit the project. The project should be exhibited at the Fremont County Fair. If it is not possible to exhibit at the Fair, the member can still complete this

requirement by making arrangements with the Fremont County Extension Office to exhibit at another time and place. The exhibit would have the same requirements

as listed for exhibition at the Fremont County Fair.

G. Your completed project record book must be turned in to the Extension Office by the official deadline date and be certified as complete.

H. In the event your animal should die or become injured and is unable to be exhibited a completed project record book, with a complete explanation of the

situation, must be turned in to the Extension Office by the official deadline date for completion.

4. Officially Dropping a Project. The 4-H Member has until May 31 of this year to officially drop a project that they are unlikely to finish, thus allowing them to repeat

that project next year if desired. A project dropped after May 31 will be considered incomplete.

If your Club or Project Leaders are planning any out of county trips, each child not riding with his own parent must have an authorization form on

file at the Extension Office 24 hours prior to leaving. All drivers must be 21 years old, have a valid driver’s license, and insurance. If you need

Also, on this day, the Poultry & Rabbit Barn will be undergoing some

great changes. We may need your help after the workshop. Please plan to work a little while when you are done with the clinics. (Think: new gravel, new tables, new cages) To help fund the upgrades, we have some Sonic discount cards available in the Extension Office

or from 4-H families who are involved in the project. Cards are $5 each and give you 10 different discounts! 100% of the money collected goes to the project. Check ‘em out!.

4-H Shirts! We have new 4-H shirts for you. Only $8 each in the Extension Office. We currently have an

assortment of sizes. When they are gone, we will take pre-paid

orders for other sizes. Deadline for county fair delivery will be July 9. Check them out!

only $5 each!

All safety equipment which includes a vest and helmet will be provided or you may bring your own. Mouth guards are not

required but are strongly recommended and must be provided by the participant.

Entry fee is $40.00 except for Mutton Bustin’ is $20.00. These events are open to the first 20 paid entries. Weight classes to
