How is the Champ Doing?: 2008 MayakobaGolf Classic Champion Brian Gay has had oneof his best seasons on the PGA TOUR. His firstcareer victory came at the Mayakoba GolfClassic in February and since that win he hasfinished among the top 10 three times. At theViking Classic in mid-September, Gay nearlywon his second title of the year, losing in aplayoff. Following that performance he jumpedinto the top 30 on the PGA TOUR’s OfficialMoney list.

Revisiting Sunday at El Camaleón Golf Club:When Brian Gay won the Mayakoba GolfClassic it was his first career win on the PGATOUR after 293 starts. After a birdie on the 8thhole, Gay extended his lead to six strokes overSteve Marino and held on for the title.

Let’s Go Esteban: Mexico’s Esteban Toledonearly moved into territory he has not seen insome time during the 2008 Mayakoba GolfClassic. He finished tied for 11th, just missinghis first top-10 finish since 2003.

Tough Cut to Make: The cut at this year’sMayakoba Golf Classic was one of the higheston the PGA TOUR all year. At 4-over-par it wasthe highest 36-hole cut on the PGA TOUR since5-over-par was the cut at the 2007 PGAChampionship.

El campo de golf el Camaleón fue nuevamente anfitrión del “Mayakoba JuniorGolf Classic”, evento conducido por la Asociación Americana de Junior Golf(AJGA), que reúne a los talentos mas jóvenes y prometedores de este deporte.

Once again, El Camaleon golf course hosted the “Mayakoba Junior Golf Classic”event presented by the American Junior Golf Association. The AJGA supportsthe youngest and most promising talent in the sport of golf.

he Palace Resorts group announced the opening of its new golfcourse called Riviera Cancun, which stands out for its excellenteco-friendly quality along with its beautiful wetland and man-

grove landscape. This new golf course has added the best environ-mentally sound practices to its construction, management, and opera-tion. These eco-friendly practices include flora and fauna protection,biodiversity, wetland hydrology, water quality care, along with the useof organic products in their maintenance programs.

FLORA, FAUNA PROTECTION AND BIODIVERSITYThe possible environmental impacts have been one of the most contro-versial subjects in new golf course construction. These impacts on ourenvironment can be substantially lessened and even prevented. We knowthis from the experience and environmental monitoring of five plus yearsat Moon Palace’s golf course, the first course from this group.

That is why during the construction of the Riviera Cancun, innovativetechnology was used to lessen and even prevent the impact that thistype of construction might cause to the environment. This includesestablishing biological corridors that guarantee the protection ofindigenous species natural habitats and their free movement withintheir habitat. The fauna was rescued before the hotel excavation beganand has been continually monitored, along with the rescue and trans-fer of the native flora to a temporary greenhouse for its future use onthe new golf course. All of this along with the optimization of theusable surfaces and the increase of natural preservation areas will makethis a truly ecological friendly golf course.

WATER QUALITYThe golf course incorporates specific ecological technology to help pre-serve the bodies of water by using hydraulic passage of water under-neath of the course, thus avoiding water flow disruption to the natu-ral preserved zones. Vegetal bio filters have been used, as this special-ized vegetation absorbs, retains, and transforms the organic fertilizers

coming from irrigation zones, thus preventingthe contamination of any bodies of water. Afundamental part of this strategy is the use ofbio rational products such as fertilizers andproducts for the management of plagues.

WORLD WIDE CERTIFIED ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITYAll of these measures applied at the RivieraCancun golf course, as well as its sister courseslocated at the Moon Palace and Playacar, arepart of the regional initiative of BetterEnvironmental Practices promoted by the EcoRed Foundation for sustainable development,with the support of the Travel Foundation and

the Alliance for the Sustainable Caribbean. The goal is to achieve envi-ronmental quality in the most economically efficient and environmen-tally sound way for each course in this region, and by this, establish thezone of the Cancun/Riviera Maya as the “first eco-friendly golf destina-tion” certified in world. This is truly an accomplishment of which we allcan be proud.

Es por esto que, durante la construcción del campo de Riviera Cancún, se aplicaronmedidas de vanguardia para prevenir y mitigar los impactos que esta obra pudieracausar al entorno. Esto incluye el establecimiento de corredores biológicos paragarantizar la protección de los hábitats naturales de las especies y su movimientoentre estos, el rescate de fauna previo al desplante del campo y su monitoreo, y elrescate y traslado de flora nativa a un vivero temporal para su posterior uso dentrodel mismo campo, lo anterior aunado a la optimización de las superficies de apro-vechamiento y aumento de las áreas de conservación natural.

CALIDAD DEL AGUAEl campo incorpora medidas de mitigación de impactos a los cuerpos de aguapor medio de paso hidráulicos bajo todos los elementos del campo de golf, evi-tando así la interrupción del flujo de agua a todas las zonas naturales conserva-das, así como biofiltros vegetales. Esos biofiltros incorporan vegetación especia-lizada para absorber, retener y transformar los fertilizantes orgánicos provenien-tes de las zonas de riego, previniendo la contaminación de los cuerpos de agua.Parte fundamental de esta estrategia es el uso de productos bioracionales comofertilizantes y productos para el manejo integrado de plagas. Estos nuevos pro-ductos han sido especialmente elaborados para mantener en las mejores condi-ciones los campos de golfde la región, incorporandomateriales orgánicos deriva-dos de la naturaleza.

Entitled “Thirteen Years of Sustainability”, Xel-Ha commenced the publication of its SocialBalance for 2008, document that describes themost relevant actions taken since 1995, toguarantee the preservation of the environmentin which the company operates, the socialdevelopment within its area of influence, itsown financial viability, and the rescue and con-servation of resources the use and enjoymentof future generations.

The company vision with which Xel-Ha hasbeen managed since 1994 lies within a funda-mental principle: To use this resource, improv-ing its status to that of an authentic touristproduct with world class services, to generatewealth and employment, contributing to theestablishment of the Cancun-Riviera Mayatourist destination, and guarantee its viabilityin the medium and long-term, for the use andenjoyment of future generations. Xel-Ha hasentered the Sustainable Tourist Recreation, arelatively new category in the traditional per-spective of tourist businesses.

El restaurante Yaxche nos presenta la exposición fotográfica de José Llehi Solnombrada Guerreros de lo Sagrado, en la que nos muestra una colección de52 imágenes que describen como la magia de lo sagrado solía convivir con loshabitantes del México Antiguo. Al final, estas obras fueron subastadas y lasganancias se donaron a “Un Hogar con Amor” y “Parque La Ceiba”.

Yaxche restaurant presented a photo exhibit by Jose Llehi Sol calledGuerreros de lo Sagrado (Warriors of the Sacred). This collection of 52 imagesdescribes how the magic of the Sacred used to live among the inhabitants ofancient Mexico. At the end of the exhibit, the photos were auctioned off withthe profits being donated to “Un Hogar con Amor” and Parque La Ceiba.
