WHAT IS THEPGA TOUR?

The beginnings of the PGA,which stands for ProfessionalGolfer´s Association, date backto 1916 when magnate RodmanWanamaker decided to form anorganization to bring togetherprofessional golf players in theUSA. As a result, a professionaltournament had to be organizedto put the best players in onesame course.

Wanamaker donated 2,500 do-llars for the prize and that firstyear the trophy was disputed.

Since then, the ¨PGA Champion-ship¨ has become one of theimportant tours of the seasonjoining the ranks of the AugustaMasters, British Open and the USOpen to form what now isknown as the Great Four.

Each year a prestigious course ischosen where the best in theworld compete for the RodmanWanamaker Trophy.

The prizes handed out by the PGAare quite substantial, but the realimportance is the prestige thatplayers acquire by being invited.

GOLF AND ECOLOGY GOHAND IN HAND IN THEMEXICAN CARIBBEAN

Concerned for the care and con-servation of the ecology, PalaceResorts, along with the archi-tects from the Jack NicklausGroup, built an ecological golfcourse on the Mexican Cari-bbean: Moon Spa & Golf Club, the first in the country. The basefor its design, construction, andoperation is the environmentand its natural resources.

The priorities to be preservedduring this innovative construc-tion were to protect as much aspossible the humid zones, theflood banks, and the wetlandwaste bunkers as well the eco-systems already in existence.

They also put into effect aProgram for Integral Environ-mental Management to assurethe strict enforcement of theaccords of the Manifest ofEnvironmental Impact set byenvironmental authorities.

IMPORTANT DETAILSANDGOLF TRIVIA

• Romans played a game with acurved stick and a ball madeout of feathers that may be theearly beginnings of golf. Somehistorians believe that it mayhave originated in the Nether-lands and that the dutch wordfor ¨kolf¨, which means ¨clubs¨or stick, is the origin of theword ¨golf¨.

• The first recorded history ofthis sport comes from XV centu-ry Scotland, where, as legendgoes, golf got its 18 holesbecause whisky has 18 shots.

• During the sixties, ArnoldPalmer, Jack Nicklaus, and GaryPlayer from South Africabecame known as the ¨BigThree¨, the first golf players tobecome millionaires.

• Golf Balls have small dimplesso they can travel longer dis-tances. In the air their velocitydiminishes and the ball hits thegreen. The air´s resistance isless if the ball has dimples on it.

• Usually, once the ball is hit itrotates while it flies thru the air.The way it rotates determinesthe direction it´s going in. It cango in a straight line or form acurve towards either side. Thisis the nightmare of all begi-nners and the mastery of con-trol of professionals.

The Riviera Maya has been blessed by mother nature with one of the most beautiful and peaceful coastlines. Here, richness abounds in the water, the earth, the air, andin its overall vibe. The elements dance together to offer a relaxing, nourishing and magical stay. The ancient Mayan history persists clearly and loudly in the pyramids andmonuments, and subtly in the hands and spirit of the land. Most of the well known Spas in the area offer special Treatments to soothe mind, body and soul.

Golf in the Mexican Caribbean is at arenewed height and importance, therefore we couldn’t take for grant-ed the concept that goes hand tohand with this activity: the SPA or“Salute per Aqua” (latin for “Healththru water”). The vast majority ofcourses that exist in this eternal para-dise count with the most exclusive, modern and complete spas to revital-ize body and soul.

After a great day in the greens, it’sdifficult to resist the great tempta-tions offered by spas located within the golf clubs. These spasboast a highly specialized personal attention, as well as qualityrevitalizing treatments for both men and woman that includemassages, energy balancing techniques, corporal and beautytreatments to establish a connection with one’s own body and anewfound equilibrium with our surroundings.

*For more information about these spas you can consult the golfcourses’ web sites listed in our section “Golf the MexicanCaribbean” (page 16).

According to Cecilia Garro, Xel-Hábrand manager: “we had to con-sider numerous criteria, from theactivities and facilities available forour guests to the products we offer, such as the all inclusive packages. The association was very interestedby the fact that, since 1997, wehave had a Market InformationSystem in the park (MIS), that ena-bles our guests to evaluate our ser-vice and their expectations aboutthe product and the brand.Another important aspect is ourmodel of sustainable development, such as the programs for theconservation of turtles, pink conch, environmental education, pro-motion of culture, sports and socialwelfare in the community, therescue of traditions such as themelipona bee, the campaigns ofbeach cleaning, that is everythingthat makes us unique, but firstof all, the beauty of our natu-ral wonder.

To the sound of electric guitars the lights turned on in Bliss (4th Street, steps awayfrom 5th Ave) on the night of its inauguration. The place was jam packed andwith a great dose of spanish rock and all sorts of dancing music all celebrated witha festive attitude that the doors to Bliss are now open in Playa del Carmen.

Fish Market opens its doors in Playa delCarmen with a unique concept thatconsists of taking you on fishing tours toTulum or Puerto Morelos to then return to therestaurant where they will clean and cookyour very own catch of the day. Your fish canbe prepared in many styles such as a fusion ofCaribbean with Mediterranean and sprinkled

with condiments from the world. They offer an extensive wine and liquor internation-al menu. While you wait for your meal you will feast your sight with the murals cre-ated by Spanish painter Fausto Zepeda, and contemplate from the open-air terracethe lively movement of Paseo del Carmen shopping mall.

Thiscross will not feel heavy on you…
