There’s plenty to keep little ones amused in andaround the East Midlands city, finds Jo Fletcher-Cross
King Richard III Visitor Centre It’s only been a few years since the body of King Richard III was
discovered under a Leicester car park; he was reinterred in
Leicester Cathedral in March 2015. Just 100 steps away is this
absorbing, state-of-the-art visitor centre, which uses imaginative
storytelling and 21st-century technology to tell the story of the king’s
life and death. Highlighting the incredible archaeological detective
work that led to the discovery of his body, this centre really brings
history to life. It’s an excellent place to take older children.

Conkers
Deep in the heart of the National Forest, Conkers is the place to go if
the kids need to let off steam: with indoor and outdoor play and
over 100 interactive exhibits, there’s plenty to expend excess energy
on. Stroll round 120 acres of maturing woodlands, lakes and ponds
or take the 18-stage activity trail challenge. Make sure to check out
the maze, Fairy Labyrinth and Wobbly Bridge. Don’t worry if it’s
raining (this is England, after all): there are four seasonal indoor
zones offering hands-on activities for youngsters. Adventurers can
cross the chasm to reach the simulated treetop walk or scamper on
to the rope walkways of the Enchanted Forest play zone. Little ones
will love the interactive forest floor, where they can spend time
chasing butterflies and leaves.

National Space Centre
Tim Peake’s stint on the International Space Station has captured
the interest of a whole new generation of children, who need little
excuse to be wowed by space anyway. Home to the UK’s largest 360-
degree planetarium, the National Space Centre is the place to bring
star-struck youngsters. The six interactive galleries keep a five-year-
old entranced for a whole day, but there’s plenty more to entertain
all ages — tiny tots can dress up as aliens or stars, while thrill-
seeking teens will love the 3D simulated space ride. The
planetarium is truly incredible, with immersive technical wizardry
bringing science and the stars to life; smaller visitors will enjoy the
Tinytarium, a mini-planetarium with glowing lights and buttons to
press. The impressive Thor Able and Blue Streak rockets are housed
in the colossal Rocket Tower, which can be seen from miles around;
every so often there’s a countdown and a ‘launch’, complete with
smoke and bone-shaking rumbles, much to the delight of the kids in
the cafe below. Come away feeling both entertained and educated —
the holy grail of a day out with the kids.

Twinlakes Theme Park This family theme park is situated just outside Melton Mowbray, about 20 miles from Leicester. It’s not packed with thrill rides, somight not be the best choice for those with tweens or teenagers, butfor younger children it’s a perfect day out. Take a train journeyaround the park before jumping onto a few rides. The five-year-oldadores the Gladiators Galleon and the Icarus Sky Flyer; her motherkeeps her eyes tightly shut. Pretending to be a knight atop a trustysteed on the Joust-About Ride is also a huge hit. On this cold Marchday, the Au Guang Dragon Zone water park is closed, but the splashplay areas and water flumes look like they’d be fantastic fun inwarmer weather. There’s a spacious indoor area too, which includesan enormous soft play section and pirate-themed rides, plus acharming Wind in the Willows water attraction. Bad weather can’tput a dampener on things here. Head for the Red Rooster Zoo Farmfor meerkats, llamas, birds and goats, plus a programme of animalencounters throughout the day. A flying display at the Phoenix Birdof Prey Centre offers a welcome chance to stop for a rest and watchthe magnificent falcons, beautiful eagles and cute owls do theirthing. twinlakespark.co.uk
