July 2019
CONGRATULATIONS on the tremendous success of our 2019 Roanoke Valley HD MDA Poker Run! The official total of the
checks and cash plus the $500 donation from the HOG Chapter was over $10,000! This is certainly something to be thank-
ful for! We have The Best HOG Chapter in the WORLD! From Susan and Robb Lipes who coordinated the event: “I want to
thank ALL who helped out and our committee members this year really went beyond our expectations! Thank you. What a
gift for the MDA families!” We had over 150 register, the poker run was very scenic and nice, and the poker stop was at a
great location. Now about the FOOD—Blake and Virginia made the best lunch by far we have had in years; and the volun-
teers serving it were awesome! Thank you very much! The auction items we received this year were I believe the most we
have ever had, and good stuff too! The 50/50 was won by a HOG member, the winner of the poker hand was a HOG mem-
ber (I can’t tell you who because then all of us will be trying to bum money) and this year we had a tie for the worst hand and
each HOG member split the money. We even had a charter member win the Bike Show! Thanks to all who took great pho-
tos, including “Cloud Bobby”. A couple of us played bike games and it proves I should have worn my helmet when I was
playing so I’d still have a helmet (just sayin’)! We even had a couple of celebrities riding with us this year. No names - you
should have been there. Plan on it next year—2020 will be our 40th anniversary of the partnership between Harley-Davidson
and MDA so let’s hope we can be as successful next year to help our association continue to fund more research for more
treatments! Next year 2020 will be the 50th Anniversary of HOG support of MDA. (See more photos on page 7.)

I want to begin by expressing my sincere apprecia-tion for the organ-izers of two June events that took a great deal of plan-ning, time and ef-fort. First was the Tangier Island Ride that Rick Hayes organized and lead the large group of HOG riders across Virginia to Reedsville then the next day taking a Ferry Ride to Tangier Island. This is a first HOG event of its kind and it was a huge success. Second was the MDA Event held on June 15th on what could not have been a nicer day. Robb & Susan Lipes showed me how the pro’s plan, organize and execute a flaw-less event. There were also many HOG members behind the scenes who contributed a great deal of time and energy to help make this MDA a huge success – thank you to everyone who participated and volunteered their time. Just a couple reminders that if you have any ideas for a day or overnight rides, please catch up with Rick Hayes and let him know. Also, Saturday July 13th at Douthat State Park will be the Chapter Appreciation Ride/Picnic. There will be more to come — we plan on having a great lunch along with a couple games for everyone. Douthat State Park know has some great fishing and hiking as well. So let’s get out and enjoy the Ride!

From the Director: Assistant Director: Mark Anderson, Assistant Director
Hey everyone, l want to start by saying what a fan-tastic job you all did for MDA. If you are someone that had a part in making this the success it was, thank you all for your ef-forts. Also, a special thanks to Susan and Rob Lipes for stepping up and heading up the whole event. Hats off to you both. So now that we have worked so hard on our Chapter fundraiser and MDA it’s time for us to relax and enjoy, and one way to do that is to come to the chapter picnic. We will ride from RVHD (kick stands up 10a) on Saturday July 13 through some beautiful back roads to Douthat State park for a relaxing afternoon with a free catered lunch at 1p. Please RSVP if you plan to come! We have a large picnic shel-ter reserved and they have horse shoes pits and we will have corn hole available. More details to be coming. We are getting to the time of the year when l need to start looking for people to fill the officer positions for our 2020 team. These can be found on the back page of the Newsletter, so if you ever thought you would like to be a part of the team please let me know. Also be thinking about people you might want to nominate for the three Primary Officers that are open next year and they are Assistant Director, Treasur-er, and Secretary. Help me keep us as they say, The Best HOG Chapter in the Whole Wide World. And last but not least, let us keep up the good work on having 2 or more planned rides a month, thank you for the great job so far.

Historian: RVHOG History

Last month we talked about upcoming rides to be held. Two of the rides were the MDA Poker Run and the State Rally. Both of these events were held at approximately the same time and place as today. I thought we might look at
how these events turned out. First let’s look at the MDA Poker Run in June 1992. The newsletter stated it was a success with $10,055 raised. Also, MDA was able to provide enough food, and what was not used was donated to the Rescue Mission in our name. Lloyd also helped with the cost of the food and door prizes and was not reimbursed from the MDA funds for this. All of the money raised went to the MDA. The other event was the State Rally which was held in Staunton. The newsletter said several members
won door prizes. Two of the three prizes from the Motor Company were won by our members. Moon Mullins also won 3rd place in the men’s slow race. A successful State Rally for us in 1992. T.J's practice sessions must have paid off. Several picnics would finish the month of July 1992. Re-member the night ride which started at 9 PM and went to midnight in the last newsletter? I suggest-ed it might not have been so popular. I was wrong; 32 bikes went on the ride and covered 110 miles. Due to the success, another night was being planned. The only business I could find was a dis-cussion concerning the Pledge of Allegiance. Joe requested anyone that has a concern with saying the Pledge of Allegiance send him a signed letter to his home or call him. Even with $188 of safety kits/glasses sold, and the LOH Bake Sale bringing in $150, the treasury was still struggling to reach $1000 with $898.11 in the bank With that I am proud to say, I am history.

Takin' it to the Streets: Seth Dyer (IMCOM) July is a great motorcycle riding month with summer riding, great travel and touring opportunities that liv-ing in our area has to offer. SHARE THE ROAD We have all seen the bumper stickers on motorcy-cles, cars and trucks with the motto, "Share the Road." But what does that mean? It means every-one who uses the road should drive responsibly and look out for each other. Small changes really make a huge impact when road conditions, traffic or weather change. Motorists must understand the safety challenges faced by motorcyclists such as size and visibility and motorcycle riding practices like downshifting and weaving to know how to antici-pate and respond to them. To put this into perspective -- an adult on a motorcy-cle riding over 60 mph on the interstate is just as vulnerable as a child on a bicycle. If you were driv-ing a car beside a child riding a bicycle on the street, you would drive cautiously and try to antici-
pate the child's sudden movements. You should do the same for motorcycle riders -- be cautious and give them some space. If you are a motorcycle rid-er, practice defensive driving because vehicle driv-ers may not see you or be paying attention. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Dress for the crash, not the ride. Wearing a U.S. Department of Transportation-approved helmet is the best protection for your head in a serious motor-cycle crash. Look for the DOT symbol on the out-side back of the helmet. Some motorcycle helmets include plastic face shields offering protection from wind, rain, insects, dust and stones. You can wear goggles if your helmet doesn't have a face shield. Be sure your arms and legs are completely covered when riding a motorcycle -- wearing leather or heavy denim is ideal. Not only does protective gear shield you during a crash, it also helps prevent de-hydration. Shoes or boots should cover your ankles and wearing gloves will protect your hands while giving you a better grip. Also, wear brightly colored clothing with reflective material to make you more visible to others on the road -- especially at night. Summer riding can be exhilarating and relaxing, just ensure you protect yourself by wearing the right gear, ensure your bike is in good working condition and keep your head on a swivel -- and as always -- never drink and ride. Be careful out there, now ya hear?

We would like to Thank the LOH ladies that brought the baked sweets to the MDA fundraiser. Our Bikes, Bugs and BBQ ride was cancelled due to the weather. It will be rescheduled for probably a Saturday in August. On July 27 we will be having a Dessert First Ride. (Eat lunch on your own first.) Meet at RVHD with tank of gas and kick stands up at 2:30. We'll take a ride and end up at Restin South in Roanoke about 4pfor dessert. Thanks, TnT (Terry & TJ)

Hi Everybody, WOW! What a good time we had on the Tangier Island 3 day ride. Can you be-lieve 37 Chapter members fol-lowed me around for that long? I think it was the promise of ice cream. Seriously, it was a great time and the special weather we ordered was a bonus. We rode great back roads across the state with only about 30 miles of interstate. We ate a lot of seafood, I mean a lot! I doubt Denise Sell will ever eat another crab cake LOL. The boat ride was relaxing, I know this because sev-eral members took naps. The island was unique with only 400 folks living there, most of them wa-termen by trade as were their ancestors , no cars, only golf carts, scooters and bicycles for transportation. They had a few small restaurants that I guarantee had the freshest seafood in the state! The history of that small place is amazing and I recommend to everyone who hasn't been there to take a weekend and go. I can give you route, hotel, and restaurant advise, all you gotta do is ask. Also I'd like to give the road captain's a shout out for keeping us all safe and together, you guys are the best! (See photos on page 6.) Speaking of road captain's, I will need some help with the ride going to Douthat State Park on July 13th for our Chapter picnic. This event normally brings out a bunch of members and I have a cool ride through the woods planned to get us there. We will need to break the group up into smaller
Road Captain groups and I need help with the leading and sweeping of those groups. Please let me know asap if you can help me out. On Saturday July 20th we are planning a ride across town to Ernie Littlefield's fundraiser at his very cool shop. This is an awesome car show with vehicles that will blow you away. As we all know Ernie really helps us out with our benefits, raffles and of course Toy's for Tot's. Now it's our turn to show him support for a cause he feels strongly about, which is helping the Kiwa-nis build a park on Melrose Ave. for kids with ADD. My goal is at least 25 bikes! We'll leave the Harley shop at 10:00 for the show. e'll have food there so I'm thinking maybe after we leave Ernie's we'll take off on a ride somewhere for ice cream. Please come prepared to give him a do-nation, I know he will appreciate the support. Any questions give me a call 314-6087!

WANT TO VOLUNTEER AS A MARSHALL FOR THE RESCUE MISSION’S DRUMSTICK DASH?
This year on Thanksgiving morning, November 28th, we need volunteers to help as “Marshall’s” for the 14th Annual Union Drumstick Dash 5K Walk/Run in downtown Roanoke. Marshalls help keep the run-ners and walkers on course, and this year we would love to have bikers ride their motorcycles in (weather permitting of course) to help make this a safe and successful event once again. Last year we had over 11,000 participants! If you are interest-ed in helping, please contact Marian McConnell at [email protected] or (540) 309-4707 for more information. We are inviting other local rid-ing clubs as well. You will need to be in place by 8am, and stay until the race is over around 11:30am. For more information about the Rescue Mission see www.rescuemission.net and also see The Rescue Mission of Roanoke on Facebook.
