A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPALFrom the Desk of Mrs. Lane

It is hard to believe that a full semester is almost over. There have been many events to celebrate as a school as well as many personal, student successes over the past four months. For some students this success may look like raising a grade, for others it is making new friends, and yet for others it is getting a scholarship offer or persevering through a challenging course. That is the beauty of Olathe East – so many different personal goals for each of our students at all levels.

Students are using portions of the advisory time each Thursday to explore their personal goals via an on-line tool called Career Cruising. Each student has a membership (some used portions of this tool in middle school), and as long as they log in once to their account, within two years after they graduate from East, they will still have access. Depending on the grade level, students have been completing a matchmaker, an interest inventory that will help guide them to areas of interests regarding future career choices. Our seniors are currently using this tool to search college and scholarship information and to develop their college and career resumes. Please ask your child about this tool. As students move to each level there are other components introduced to them that are important at each grade level.

Remember that the last day of first semester is Tuesday, December 19. The first day back from break for students is Thursday, January 4.

Semester finals week is as follows with all classes beginning at 8:00 am:

• Monday, December 11– Thursday, December 14: Seven-period day - No Block

• Friday, December 15: Hours 2, 4, Seminar/Advisory, Hawk Hour and Hour 6 - Full day

• Monday, December 18: Hours 1 and 5 – Early dismissal at 11:15am

• Tuesday, December 19: Hours 3 and 7 – Early dismissal at 11:15am

No lunches will be served on Monday, December 18th and Tuesday, December 19th. Buses will run at 11:15 on December 18th and 19th.

Any parents who need to excuse their student from attending school during finals, resulting in them missing exams, should get their request to me two weeks prior to finals via email at [email protected]. Also, please avoid calling your student out of class during finals. We do not call into classrooms or deliver passes to classrooms during testing.

As we head into the winter months, parents are also reminded that school closings for inclement weather will be announced over television and radio through the area. School activities are usually, but no always, canceled when school is closed. It is very important to check East’s website and Blackboard email messages to determine if an activity is still on, even if school is closed. Coaches and sponsors will also be in communication with families.

Thank you to all students and parents for a smooth, productive first semester. On behalf of our faculty and staff, have a safe and relaxing holiday season.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTS LARGEST INDUCTEE CLASS iN OE HISTORY

The Olathe East National Honor Society inducted a new class of 134 members this past November 15, becoming the largest inductee class in Olathe East history. Members of NHS not only maintain a high scholastic record, but they also desire to do good in the community through service activities. Their annual Neon Run fundraiser that followed just two days later, on November 17th, was a huge success; students ran, danced, won raffle prizes, and genuinely had a great time. Kudos to the NHS members and inductees!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL NEW NHS INDUCTEES!

Attention,Freshmen Students!

The Olathe East Choirs have thirteen members that were recently selected to participate in the 2017 Kansas Music Educator’s Association NE District Honor Choir. The singers go through a rigorous audition process, necessary to determine the best of the best for the honor choir in this competitive area. One portion of the audition is a scored sight singing test in which six of the OE singers earned a perfect score. The thirteen OE musicians will perform with the other approximately three hundred outstanding singers from the NE Kansas district on Saturday, December 2 at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School.

THIRTEEN OLATHE EAST CHOIR STUDENTSSELECTED FOR STATEWIDE HONOR CHOIR

Hawk leaders are almost done with their lessons for this year. Last week we showed Freshmen a Ted Talk by special Olympic athlete Amy Purdy. It focused on living beyond limitations and at the end we guided Freshmen to problem-solve how they could live beyond the limits they have in their lives. The next lesson was about perception vs. reality and how rumors and judgments may not always be right, especially on social media. We will continue our discussion on social media in our December lesson. Our last Hawk Leader event of the year is Cocoa and Cram on December 14 from 5:30-7:30pm. Our purpose is to help Freshmen prepare for their first semester finals.

On November 9, members of the S.A.L.T. of the Hawks traveled to Ridgeview Elementary to help winterize their courtyard (which was designed and constructed a few years ago by the 21st Century Design Academy) and their community gardens. We look forward to partnering with Ridgeview in early-Spring to help prepare and plant crops in their gardens that will help provide food for the Panther community throughout the late-Spring and Summer months.

Spanish National Honor Society is off to a great start this year! In September we welcomed our 2017-18 pledge class. Those students maintain a 3.75 Spanish GPA, and a 3.6 overall GPA. Not only are we a high-achieving academic group, but we also focus on serving our community - especially within our Hispanic community. Members complete 16 hours of community service, eight of which must be Spanish-related. This is not only a great way to give back to the community, but it also gives our members the chance to practice their Spanish outside of the classroom.

Our members are already busy serving in various ways! Some students are helping with health screenings, serving meals, and working in the clothes closet at the Center of Grace. Others assist Spanish-speaking children with their homework at Mission Southside Homework Huddles, work at

the New Hope Food Pantry, or help in a variety of ways through COR Faithworks. As the holidays start rolling, we are especially excited about our annual winter activities. We collected food for less fortunate families to be able to celebrate Thanksgiving, and we are looking forward to “adopting” families through Mission Southside and the Salvation Army for Christmas. We will gather for our “wrapping party” to wrap all of presents so that our adopted family can celebrate Christmas without the financial stress of buying gifts.

With all the hard work our members put in, we of course get to have a little fun every once in awhile, too. For our first semester social, we will see Disney’s latest movie, Coco, which celebrates Mexican culture through a tale about Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). We can’t wait to see what the rest of the year has in store for us!
