It was two weeks before Christmasand all through the state, tummieswere rumbling, we just couldn’t

wait ...Nothing says the holidays like morsels

of my Christmas favorites, such as gin-gerbread, peppermint and eggnog — thelist goes on! Well, guess what, Ono read-ers? I made my list and checked it twiceto make sure I didn’t miss out on thesweetest of the season’s delights.

This week, let’s make it snow can-dies, marshmallows, cookies andmore, and hopefully when Santa Clauscomes walking through the door, thisChristmas will be a merry one for all toenjoy — be sure to wrap the littleone’s toys!

Larry’s Bakery“On the first day of

Christmas, Larry’s Bakerygave to me, some onoli-cious gingerbread delightsthat I’ve placed under mytree!”

OK, so while I may notbe an award-winning lyricist, I am cer-tain that I’m full of holiday cheer!Scrooge may be sickened by this sweetthought, but what’s even sweeter andmore alluring is the village of ginger-bread houses, populated by a bunch ofgingerbread men at Larry’s Bakery.

“The holidays are such a busy timefor us,” says Iris Yafuso, who owns andoperates this Salt Lake bakery alongwith her brother Lance. “This year, forthe first time, we’re offering fresh, homemade gingerbread houses in smalland large sizes ($25 small, decorat-ed/$35 large, decorated).

These decadent houses are extrava-gantly decorated with an assortment ofcandies and treats, including M&M’s,candy canes, marshmallows and evenyour favorite cereal. Larry’s Bakery cancater the decorations to what you desire.

“Customers can tell us what they wanton their house, but we’d like to have atleast a three to four day notice before

pick-up, so that we can be sure that wehave your gingerbread house cus-tomized to what you want,” Iris states.

A royal icing, which is like an edibleglue, is used to construct the houses. And when it comes to the art of ginger-bread houses, constructing them is themost fun of all — the whole family canget involved.

“We also have plain houses available($15 small/$25 large), where you candecorate it yourself. I know a lot of peo-ple are going to want to take part in that, and we’ll include frosting on the side,”she adds, noting that the gingerbreadhouses will already be built, leaving youwith a blank canvas per se, to adhereyour own candies.

Gingerbread is one of those things thatis unique to Christmas, and it has thatmagical way about it that gets everyoneinto the holiday spirit! The aroma of gin-gerbread alone is delicious, and it’s a lotof fun to work with.

So, what exactly is gingerbread com-prised of? Well, according to Lance, abaking expert, it’s all about perfect distri-butions of ground ginger powder, nut-meg, cinnamon, flour, molasses andhoney, thus resulting in a tantalizing hol-iday treat.

Larry’s Bakery also offers a vast selec-

tion of gingerbread men that are readilyavailable either decorated or plain.Prices range from $1.50 to $4, dependingon size and decoration of the cookie.

Make it a holiday to remember atLarry's Bakery! Holiday hours are

Hours:Sunday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m.;Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m.

General manager KatieNguyen has a recommend-ed must-try for new cus-

tomers to Shakey’s Pizza Parlor —the chicken. That’s right. Theboss at the family-friendly pizzarestaurant wants everyone toknow how good its chicken is.Pizza? Everyone knows Shakey’spizza, but the chicken appetizersare tasty, juicy and burdened withtoo much sauce that hides flavorsand make the joysticks in thegame room hard to handle. Shemay be on to something.

The wings come in four-, eight-and 12-piece sizes and range from$5.99 to $15.99. Topped with ranchdressing and a Dr. Pepper barbe-cue sauce, the wings are crispyand a little sweet. If tempted, youcan turn up the heat with a dip intothe Budweiser Hot and SpicySauce. The combination wings fitperfect with the restaurant’spatrons. Keiki will enjoy the sweetcoating, and with just a dunk itbecomes an adult-themed mealstarter that will have you sweating.

A nice selection to go alongwith the wings is the MojoSupreme ($9.99), a potato versionof nachos that has everything aspud needs. Bacon, Cheddar andmozzarella cheese, olives andonions are placed on the bountifulslices, with salsa and sour creamon the side. Nguyen says the pota-to and wings partnership hasbeen strong since they opened.

“A lot of families like to come inand order the wings and MojoSupreme,” she says. “They tastegreat and are fun to eat.”

If you like your pupus compara-ble to a complete meal — and who

doesn't? — the Golden FriedChicken with Mojo Potatoes($9.49 for four pieces and $18.99for eight) is a good choice. Notonly is the serving size large butthe chicken is delicious. Seriously. This is perhaps the juiciest chick-en I’ve ever had. Each order of theproprietary chicken — meaningthe birds are found only atShakey’s — is individuallycooked, so there is no heat lampto sap flavor and moisture.

One final pupu suggestion issomething customers them-selves have created. Pizza andfootball just go together, andthoughtful fans have figured outthat bite-sized pieces of theirfavorite Italian pie just work bet-ter in party settings. So they askfor an alteration.

“We have a lot of people whocome in and ask us to cut theirpizza into small pieces, which weare happy to do,” says Nguyen. There ya go. Finger food just for theasking and the smiling faces of keiki.Mom and Dad, are you listening?

We all dance to a dif-ferent drummer —and that goes for

hungry Dining Out readers aswell. Not to sound like a bro-ken record, but the trick forrestaurateurs to keep busi-ness humming along is tomeet or exceed customers’expectations by tuning in totheir dietary preferences.

“We understand people whodon’t eat meat,” replies KaewAnuttsara, owner-chef ofKaew’s Thai Villa, when askedif there are any meat- and fish-free options on the menu.

She’s playing our song. Her menu touts “Healthy

Thai Food,” which meansusing only the freshest ingre-dients, light oil and no MSG.Anuttsara’s commitment isapparent, as she offers brownrice, which is cooked upfresh every day, and shesings the praises of “a veryhealthy rice noodle” in hersoups (but, alas, uses chick-en broth).

But stay tuned, becausethere’s so much more thansoup here.

Customers get in the swingof ordering at Kaew’s ThaiVilla by first, of course, deciding on a dish, thenchoosing among vegetablesand tofu, chicken, pork, beefor shrimp for protein.Anuttsara recommends herGreen Curry, noting that it’s ahighly popular dish in gener-

al andespeciallywith vegetari-ans. The curry, served withThai jasmine or brown rice(add 50 cents for sticky rice),can be ordered mild, mediumor hot, and, in this case, includes sliced tofu marinatedin green curry sauce madewith non-sweetened coconutmilk, as well as kaffir lime leaf, basil, peas and eggplant.Since the tofu option comeswith more vegetables, thosecan be included as well.

So this Green Curry is notonly packed with flavor, butit’s good for you, too. Andat $7 for lunch, $8 for din-ner, you’re getting itfor a song.

“Not Your Normal Loco”comes with your choice ofwhite or brown rice and achoice of MA‘O Farms SassyMix Salad or 4Kings house-made Kim Chee.

“This is just a way ofdoing the loco moco, with-out doing the loco moco. Christmastime is here at Patisserie LaPalme D’or! Located at Ala Moana Center, this classy pastry shop intrigues my sweettooth with its full-fledged philosophy toblend French flavor and Japanese crafts-manship, which in my mind truly equatesto impeccable taste. This is all thanks toowner Hiromi Tanaka and her dedicatedstaff, including head chef Akiko Kimura.

Upon my most recent visit to La PalmeD’or, it was as if it was Christmas morn-ing, when chef Akiko presented me withher newest Chocolate Mint Cake ($4.50per slice, $45 for whole cake). I guaranteeyou that this cake is Santa-approved andwill save you from waking up to a stock-ing full of coal this year. Imagine a

smooth peppermint mousse atop a lightcombination of chocolate sponge cakefilled with decadent chocolate mousseand chocolate pearls. And if this isn’tenough, chef Akikio has adorned thismasterpiece with chocolate macaroonsas well, while topping it off with a hotchocolate spread on the cake’s outer-most layer. Oh, night divine!

And especially made for the holidays, the establishment’s Bouche de Noel fea-tures a delicious chocolate cream wrappedin a fluffy vanilla chiffon sponge cake ($44small, $50 medium). Or, if you prefer, youcan take a bite of the Bouche de Noel, con-sisting of vanilla sponge cake with a straw-berry jam and vanilla cream-filled center($36 small, $46 medium).

Patisserie La Palme D’or is proof thatpure, delicious extravagance goes handin hand with the holiday season — it’sthat time of year when everyonedeserves a little something extra special!Place your orders quickly, because some-thing tells me good ole Kris Kringle hashis GPS set straight for La Palme D’or thisChristmas Eve!

Loyal Eggs ‘n Things cus-

Eggs ‘n Things has been a must-go destination for decades, reel-ing in droves of tourists and

locals alike with a varied menu that fea-tures traditional American breakfast foods with local favorites.

The restaurant was opened in 1974 by Jerry and JanFukunaga, a husband-and-wife team who had a passion formaking tasty food with fresh ingredients. Jerry was a fisher-man, and he started out by serving the fish that he wouldcatch. Both Jerry and Jan were very health-conscious, whichinfluenced the way they created their dishes.

“They always put a healthy spin on many of the dishes,”says general manager Michael Skedeleski. “Their goal was toserve quality food with the spirit of Aloha.”

Those founding ideals have carried over through the years,as the restaurant continues to use fresh ingredients.

“Pretty much whatever we get delivered that day goes outthat day, including our eggs and produce,” Skedeleski says.

While keeping in touch with its roots, the restaurant alsostrives for innovation, as well. Currently, Eggs ‘n Things chefsare in the process of creating new dishes, including seasonal fishdishes and a chicken dish for dinner. Plus, Eggs ‘n Things has aset of rotating specials, including the Fresh Papaya Sour CreamCrepe ($12.95).

“The Loco Moco Pasta is the best! Yes,it'’s not on the menu here, people knowabout it by word of mouth, and while itmight not sound that appetizing tosome, you really have to try it beforejumping to conclusions,” says AtlantisSeafood & Steak executive general man-ager Steven Matsuno.

This one-of-a-kind dish features a heap-ing mound of pasta soaked in a creamy car-bonara sauce, and topped with your locomoco necessities, including an over-easyegg, a hearty Angus burger and a demi-glaze gravy.

“It’s our most popular employee meal, and all of are guests who have tried it

immediately fall in love with it,”Matsuno explains, “it’s comparable tobeef stroganoff.”

Complete your meal by pairing it withthe perfect wine of your choice. Kamaainaalso receive a special 10 percent discountwith an ID.

Looking for a hot, delicious andhealthy dinner towarm you up ona cool Decemberevening? Hanaki

Restaurant, located inManoa Marketplace, pro-vides the perfect solutionfor you with its shabushabu dining options.

“Shabu shabu is a greatwintertime meal that’shealthy but tastes good,”says manager MarkMitsuyoshi. “The soupsare nice, hot and healthyfor you.”

Although HanakiRestaurant first opened in1996 and was famous forits buffet menu, the eateryhas since changed toshabu shabu dining lastMay. Although the majori-ty of customers choosethe shabu shabu diningoption, Hanaki still pro-vides an a la carte menu, featuring popular itemsfrom its buffet menu, suchas shrimp tempura, chick-en kara age and misoyakibutterfish.

The goal behindHanaki’s change to shabushabu was to provide fam-ily-friendly, healthy diningfor customers.

“We wanted to have afamily restaurant and to

have good-tasting foodthat’s affordable (atHanaki),” saysMitsuyoshi. “Hanaki pro-vides a great environmentfor both a family dinnerand for a fast lunch too, asshabu shabu dining doesnot take very long. Ourshabu shabu has a greatvariety of different, fresh, locally grown vegetables, sliced meats andseafood.”

The shabu shabu diningoption is perfect for fami-lies with children, asMitsuyoshi states that therestaurant provides a fam-ily-friendly dining atmos-phere, and shabu shabuitself provides childrenwith nutritious meals.

“Your family canreceive all the vegetableservings they need andthe average price (percustomer) is $12 to $13,”Mitsuyoshi says. “Eachstove can do one soup ortwo at the same time. Ifyou can’t decide whichone (soup base) tochoose, you can get two.Hanaki provides a com-plete shabu shabu experi-ence,” he adds. “We havemany types of soupbases, starches, meats, vegetables and evendesserts to choose from.

There’s always somethingfor everyone.”

An additional bonus:Shabu shabu dining doesnot result in the bloatedfeeling one usually experi-ences after overeating atChristmas buffets.

“It’s (shabu shabu) ahealthy, balanced meal,”Mitsuyoshi explains. “Youwon’t have to worryabout holiday overeating(because shabu shabu isnutritious).”

Upon choosing theshabu shabu option, cus-tomers must first selectthe soup base of theirchoice ($5). Soup flavorsrange from Miso (medi-um, traditional, Japanesesoybean paste) and theKonbu (a light, seaweed-based udon soup) to theSukiyaki, a heavier soup

with sugar and shoyu. Customers can choose

a variety of ingredients toadd to their soup oncethey select the base. Eachof these ingredients — avariety of vegetables, meats and seafood — arelocated in plates or bowlscolor-coded by price.

“We list our prices bycontainer because it’seasy to understand; wehave such a large varietyof items,” saysMitsuyoshi. “Our greenbowls are $2.50, our redbowls are $3.50 and platesare $4.50.”

Among the most popu-lar vegetable choices arebaby bak choy andChinese cabbage. Clams, baby octopus and lobsterballs are popularseafood choices among

customers, and prime ribtends to be frequentlychosen among the differ-ent meat dishes.

“We have more than 40different kinds of vegeta-bles and more than 35types of meat and seafoodto choose from,”Mitsuyoshi says.

Dining shabu shabu-style at HanakiRestaurant is perfect for

the holiday season.Family members andfriends can enjoy oneanother’s company over asteaming soup pot, andthe restaurant providesample seating. If you’restill searching for the per-fect Christmas gift,Hanaki gift certificatesare available to purchasefor holiday gifts in anydenomination.
