Thick, juicy and undeniably fill-ing, the Reuben sandwich holdsits own as a top pick for the rav-

enously hungry. Packed within twoslices of grilled rye bread lies a perfectcombination of meat, cheese and sauer-kraut, which slowly but surely lures inthe heartiest of appetites.

As a self-proclaimed fanatic of thisparticular patty melt, I am sending mygratitude to the genius creator of thissandwich (rumored to be either ReubenKulakofsky, a Lithuanian-born grocerfrom Omaha, Neb., or Arnold Reuben, the German owner of the once-famousReuben's Delicatessen in New York).Whoever it may be, thank you for shin-ing light into the sandwich stratosphere.

This week, forget the prim and properwhen it comes to dining etiquette, becausewith the Reuben the messier the better! So,here we go! Let's get ready to get down anddirty as I take on the Reuben Sandwich atthe following Ono, You Know establish-ments!

Kakaako KitchenThis local hot spot opened its doors for

business in 1995 on Waimanu Streetbefore moving to its current location inWard Centre in March 2000. Twelveyears later, Kakaako Kitchen continues tobloom with upscale cuisine at a reason-able price, while always incorporatingfresh, local ingredients when available.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner,Kakaako Kitchen keeps it real with itsKakaako Fried Rice, Chicken KatsuCurry, Grilled Honey-Shoyu MarinatedPork Chops, Mixed Island Barbecue andmore. Believe me, my mouth is wateringalready. But on a mission to get messy, itwas all about a deli counter favorite —move on over, ham and cheese sandwich, let's give a round of applause for the oneand only Reuben Sandwich ($12.99), fea-turing thinly sliced and tender pastramiwith melted Swiss cheese and sauerkrautmixed with a special Thousand Islandsauce on grilled swirl rye bread.

“We make our own Thousand Islandsauce and mix our own sauerkraut, andmaybe that’s why this particular sandwichhas a lot of fans,” says general managerBilly Bal. “I know a lot of people whocome back all the time to order this, sothat says a lot about the sandwich.”

Then have your choice of greens, friesor mac salad to complete your meal. “We

serve a straight-up local-style mac salad,”Bal adds. “The mac salad paired with thesandwich is unreal. It’s the best combina-tion ever!”

You might want to ask for an endlesssupply of napkins with this savory sand-wich, as it just oozes with its onolicioussauce and tender slices of meat. To put itsimply, Kakaako Kitchen’s Reuben

Sandwich is finger lickin’ good!

I t’s a sweet family affair at Larry’s Bakery onLawehana Street in Salt Lake, where thisrenowned establishment is consistently buzzing

with loyal customers on a sugar high. Larry’s Bakeryfirst opened its doors in the 1960s at its original loca-tion in Waimalu Shopping Center, then owned andoperated by Larry Yafuso, who perfected the art ofbaking at Dunwoody baking school in Minnesota.Today, you’ll find his children Iris and Lance Yafusospearheading the bakery, along with the rest of theYafuso clan.

“My dad passed away in 1979 from a massive brainaneurysm,” Iris says. “It was hard on the family, but weknew we had to keep the bakery going — my dad wasalways very hard-working, giving and courageous. Healways said to keep up with the times and don’t staystagnant or else you won’t get ahead.”

And with those words and the memory of her fatheralways in her heart, Iris keeps her father’s legacy aliveby scratch-baking classic desserts and pastries, includ-ing apple and coconut sticks, cinnamon twists, andChantilly and Dobash cakes, which the bakery isknown for.

“I’m happy that Larry’s Bakery has been able togrow and prosper. I’m very proudof my children for being able tokeep up with something that theirfather started — in fact, doingmore than what he did,” says Iris’mother, Irene Yafuso. Irene willturn 80 years old in a couple ofweeks, but remains forever young, spending countless hours at thebakery.

“I come in at 3 every morning,”she states. “I man the oven, frostthe cakes, cook the rice and bakethe pastries in the morning. I’m at

the bakery every day of the week — I have nothingelse to do,” Irene says with a laugh, although sheadmits that working at the bakery keeps her goingstrong.

“This is my family, and I really enjoy working withthem. It’s nice to see my grandchildren helping outtoo,” she says. “I know Larry is smiling down on us. I

just want him to know that we’re doing our best.”Larry’s Bakery initially began as a retail bakery, prior

to transforming into a wholesale bakery for 10 years. Most recently, the establishment reverted back to retail, and business is doing better than ever.

“We are fully stocked with pastries every morning;we’re running out of space,” Iris explains. “But we can’tcomplain. Starting tomorrow (Monday), we’ll also beadding a handful of items to the menu.”

These items that she speaks of are actually made withLarry’s original recipes from the early 1950s, which, according to Iris, are all transcribed in perfect script in hismany handmade cookbooks.

So, be ready to satisfy your sweet tooth withPineapple Boat ($1.65), Peach Cream Cake ($8.50-$89.95 depending on size), Bear Claws ($1.20) and JellyDoughnuts ($1.50).

“We’ve gained so many new customers and havereconnected with loyal customers throughout the years, and a lot of them remember my dad’s old recipes, sowe’ve decided to bring them back,” Iris explains.

Pineapple Boat features a flaky turnover with a jelly-filled crushed pineapple center, brushed gently with asugar glaze. Iris describes this tempting Larry’s Bakeryclassic as something you won’t find anywhere else.Peach Cream Cake is another dessert that many cus-tomers have been begging for. It features a fluffy whitechiffon cake and a decadent custard cream frostingintertwined with the sweetest bits of peaches. BearClaws are the epitome of must-have bakery delights —a Danish dough filled with almond paste and sprinkledwith roasted almonds. Lastly, Jelly Doughnuts are irre-sistible to all palates as they feature a signature dough-nut oozing with strawberry jelly and topped off with adash of powdered sugar.

“We always listen to our customers, and they wantedthese classics back, so here they are,” Iris says with asmile. “I don’t think anything has totally changed — per-

haps a tweak here and there, but everything is from mydad’s original recipes. My hope is to stick with his oldrecipes and give them a bit of modern flair. To keep upwith the times, we’ve taken old recipes and have turnedthem into something new.”

Enter Larry’s Bakery’s parfaits, which also will hit themenu tomorrow. Parfaits are priced at $1.95 each and areavailable in alluring flavors of red velvet, chocolate fudge, peach cream, haupia, chantilly, white chantilly, dreamcake and haupia dobash.

“What we’ve done is we’ve taken all the flavors of ourcakes and turned them into parfaits. Now you can haveyour own mini cake in a cute little cup and not feel soguilty — they’re perfect for parties,” Iris states, noting thatyou must special order the parfaits a few days in advance.

And breaking the “cookie-cutter mold,” Larry’s Bakerybreathes new life on your typical cookie ($1-$6 each)with a plethora of hand-decorated designs and custom-made photo cookies.

“We have been selling cookies for a while, but we’vereally started to offer a lot more variety and styles to gowith every occasion,” says Iris.

As the years go on, blood, sweat and tears have beenpoured into Larry’s Bakery, and for the Yafusos, manningthe bakery is a simple way of honoring the man who hadgiven them so much.

“Knowing that I’m working to help keep my dad’slegacy alive really helps me wake up early every morningand keeps me motivated,” Iris says. “It’s exciting. A fewweeks ago we also started selling our products atMomilani Farmers Market at Momilani CommunityCenter in Pearl City on Fridays from 3 to 7 p.m.

“My father has had a great impact on my life and thelives of many others. I just hope he’s happy.”

Yes, once everything is said and done, the sweetestblessing of all is a father’s legacy that will live on forever.

Take a step over the edge into avast world of eclectic cuisineat The Edge of Waikiki.

Perched next to Sheraton WaikikiHotel’s Infinity edge pool, this signa-ture pool bar was inspired byWaikiki’s A-listers of yesteryear. Here you’ll find a vibrant, adult-onlyatmosphere offering up “Vint-Edge”cocktails and so much more.

According to Sheraton Waikiki’sexecutive sous chef Brett Villarmia,The Edge of Waikiki recently show-cased its new and improved menuabout three weeks ago, which pres-ents diners with “Hawaiianized-Americano” cuisine.

“What we’re doing is takingclassic American food and intro-ducing local ingredients and a littlebit of island flair. We’re steeringaway from the bar/pub-style cui-sine,” he says, noting that The Edgeoriginally played off of a Tex-Mexdining concept.

Headliners off the new menu, include Chilled Rice Noodle Salad($14), Fire Grilled Hamburger“Paniolo” ($14), Buffalo ChickenHoagie ($14), FBI “from the BigIsland” grilled flat bread longboard($15) and Chef D’s Ahi Poke grilledflat bread longboard ($16).

“We introduced a new style of cui-sine here — we made it a little moresexy,” Villarmia explains. “We havethe best pool in the world, whichoverlooks Waikiki beach, so wewanted to bring the food up to thatsame level.

“Our Chef D’s Ahi Poke longboardis a must-try,” he adds. “Instead ofyour traditional pizza we feature arectangular flat bread. This one istopped with diced Hawaiian ahi,‘Poke’ aioli, Hirabara spinach andred onions. For dessert, you have to

try our Island Fruit Bowl withAlmond Float ($10), a refreshingdish of pineapple, watermelon, strawberries and berries.”

P izza. Just the word can make your tastebuds tingle. There’s a plethora of pizzaplaces out there, so it’s easy to pig out

on the popular pies (or daintily nibble on aslice) — unless, of course, you’re vegan.Sure, you can request no cheese, but what’sthe fun in that?

Zpizza has a vegetarian-friendly solution:vegan cheese. Yes, and there’s not a bit of dairyinvolved (go to zpizza.com for a list of ingredients).

The pizzeria’s Berkeley Vegan ($12.95 small,$23.95 large and $26.95 extra large) comes with

a regular or whole wheat crust (gluten-freecrusts are available for small only) topped withmarinara sauce, vegan “cheese,” veggie burgercrumbles, zucchini, tomatoes, mushrooms, red onions and bell peppers. It’s colorful,

healthy and dairy-free — a vegandream come true.

“That’s really what all the veganpeople order,” says owner CesarLlarenas. “They also canchoose gluten-free crust witha choice of toppings andvegan cheese.”

That’s right, veggielovers. There are 20-some-thing different pizzasoffered on the Zpizzamenu, but if you don’t seeexactly what you’re craving, why not build your own?The possibilities are prac-

tically endless. Choose among the threecrusts, add your favorite sauce (basil pesto, barbecue, chipotle pesto, marinara, roastedgarlic, Thai peanut or 100 percent organic

tomato), decide on a cheese (feta, Gorgonzola, mozzarella, Parmesan, provolone, ricotta or

vegan) and then pile on the veggies(more than 20 to choose from). To

kick up the flavors even more, feelfree to add fresh basil, cilantro,

oregano or pili pili oil, since they’reoffered at no extra charge and add a

zing of fresh flavor. With dine-in, takeout, deliv-

ery and catering, Zpizza isthe place to go for fire-roasted pizzas with all-nat-ural ingredients.

What’s not to like aboutShiro’s Saimin Haven? Thewalls of the famed family

eatery are covered with the art workof dozens of keiki who recreate theirfavorite bowl of steaming noodles incrayon. Next to those are the collec-tion “best of” winners plaques andthe inspirational messages thatremind us we won’t be here forever,so we might as well enjoy somesaimin while we still have time.

Filling stomachs for more than 40years, Shiro’s has a menu for every-one, which includes 64 types ofsaimin, plate lunches, sandwiches, burgers, bentos, deserts — and yes —pupus. After all, what is a big bowl ofbroth and noodles without somethingto nibble on between or before slurpsof tangy broth?

The choices are large including,Pork Adobo ($3.90),Teri Beef ($3.55),

Crispy Gau Gee ($2.40) and Wonton ($2.25), Chicken Katsu($3.55), Mochiko Chicken ($3.55)and the all-new Crispy Pork Belly($3.90). Picking out a favoriteamong the list is hard to do, evenfor Shiro’s son-in-law, Aaron Lee.When asked, Lee picks out six ofseven items that go perfectly withthe dish made famous by his leg-endary father-in-law. You think

the label is a stretch? Don’t.Shiro Matsuo, who was a cookfor Gov. John Burns, wasinducted into the HawaiiRestaurant Association Hall of

Fame in 2008. At the time,Gov. Linda Lingle des-ignated MatsuoHawaii’s Statesman ofHonor.

Sadly, Matsuo isn’twith us any more. He

STORY BY NICOLE KATO nm PHOTOS BY NATHALIE WALKER

Buffets are the perfectplaces to try new foodswithout spending tons ofmoney on an entree, andFive Star InternationalBuffet, founded in Japanin 2003 by Noriyuki

Kato, is the perfect place for anyone whowants five-star Japanese, Hawaiian andWestern food in a comfortable atmos-phere in the heart of Waikiki.

Conveniently located in RoyalHawaiian Center on the third level ofBuilding C, Five Star InternationalBuffet also has friendly service and rea-sonable prices. The lunch buffet foradults is priced at $19 and $12 for chil-dren 5-12 years old. Dinner costs $48 foradults and $24 for children 5-12. (Lunchand dinner are free for children 4 andunder.)

There’s no doubt that happy hour spe-cials are a favorite on Oahu, and a la carteitems are available here during happy

hour from 3 to 5 p.m. Some of the stand-out drinks available at the establishmentare Mojito and Blue Hawaii — bothpriced at $8.

Japanese cuisine ranges fromTempura to Braised Pork Soybean andSteamed Pumpkin, while Western influ-ences are evident in Smoked Salmon,Pizza and Steak.

For those wishing to experience theHawaiian cuisine of the Islands, Five StarInternational Buffet also offers GrilledFish, Seafood Salad and Poke. And itwouldn’t reflect Hawaii’s melting-potreputation without dishes from India,Korea and Vietnam.

Chef Yasushi Kawai and staff prepareexcellent dishes for all to enjoy — about30 dishes during lunch and 50 to 60items during dinner.

With all these choices, it can be hard todecide what you want on your plate, butthat’s where we come in, Dining Outreaders.

No good buffet is complete withoutPrime Rib, and Five Star InternationalBuffet does it right. The meat is tenderand juicy, and sliced up for individualservings.

There also is a great selection ofseafood dishes such as Baked Oystersserved with a creamy mushroom sauce;Miso Butterfish marinated for one day ina mirin and soy sauce mixture beforebaking (the top sauce is tamamiso madewith miso paste and egg); Seared Ahiwith a spicy homemade gochujang(Korean-style hot sauce); and SeafoodDynamite that houses scallops inside of acrab, imitation crab and cheese mixture.

Lucky we live Hawaii! And thatmeans fresh fruit is in abundance. Theestablishment capitalizes on this goodfortune by offering fresh, sweet fruit forall to enjoy. It’s a great ending to a spe-cial dinner and a fresh pick-me-up duringthe warm lunch hours.

Often at buffet establishments, desserts

are overlooked because of the abundanceof great main dish options, but the dessertselection at Five Star International Buffetis not only delicious, it’s pleasing to theeyes as well. Customers can choose fromFruit Tart, Chocolate Mousse Cake,French-style Vanilla Cheesecake,Blueberry Cheesecake and CoconutCream Cake. And each dessert is the per-fect size, so you can try them all!

The restaurant in Hawaii is the firstlocation outside of Hokkaido, Japan, forFive Star International Buffet, which hasacclaimed success at four locations in theLand of the Rising Sun.

According to the staff, the Hawaiieatery differs from those in Japan byfeaturing as much locally grown andraised meats, produce and seafood aspossible every day.

It’s rare to find gourmet items in abuffet, but here customers are treated toan international gourmet assortment ofgood eats.

“The food is so fresh,” agreeslongtime friend and businesspartner Walter James. “Shemakes it all right in front of you.”

Bui and husband Tommy Danghave been on the restaurant scenefor 10 years now, and have gainedpatrons from everycorner of the Islandalong the way. When their eaterymoved fromWaikiki to Aiea in2010, devotees did-n’t hesitate to fol-low the aroma offresh pho all theway to KaonohiStreet.

And hungry din-ers everywhere —including James andI — will frequent the restaurantmore than usual next month toindulge in all of its Septemberspecials.

Once you’ve found the cozyspot, you have permission to getlost in the Vermicelli Special forSeptember ($7.99), which fea-tures a bottomless bowl of vermi-celli noodles topped with freshcucumber, mint, sliced carrot,

“That’s a lot of good food,”says James.

Shrimp Papaya Salad withSummer Roll ($7.99) is anotherSeptember feature that presents ahealthy dose of shredded greenpapaya salad — so crisp and

When Yogurstory hit theHonolulu dining scene in2010, customers were imme-

diately drawn to it ― and the restaurantcreated quite a buzz. In both its creativefood that utilizes a variety of influences, and its classy and comfortable atmos-phere, Yogurstory offered somethingtruly different.

Although it first began as primarily aplace for brunch and yogurt, there’s alot more to Yogurstory these days. Infact, Yogurstory has got a little bit ofeverything ― breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and drinks.

Executive chef Andy Dalan describesYogurstory’s cuisine as “local style, with a little bit of California.”

Some of the most popular dishesinclude Prime Rib Loco Moco ($14.95)and Hurricane Rice Bowl ($13.95),which Dalan says is a twist on thepopular Korean dish bibambap. Itfeatures kimchee and bacon fried rice, fresh vegetables, prime rib and apoached egg.

Also try Ahi Dragon Style ($17.95),with avocado crab crust, a spicy srirachasauce, tomato salad and furikake rice.Other tasty items include appetizersNinja Nachos ($9.95), which has spicygrilled chicken, cabbage, edamame,

green onion, sweet potato and jalapeno, with a sriracha salsa on the side, andSpiked Cold Tofu ($7.95), which featuresfresh tofu with sea salad, green onionand tomato ― all drizzled with ajalapeno yuzu soy sauce.

For many customers, Yogurstory’sselection of waffles ― all of whichwere created by Dalan ― is reasonenough to visit the restaurant. “Thewaffles have just been a hit,” Dalansays, adding that they are great foreither breakfast or dessert. “At night,we have people who come just for the

Yogurstory has been around just less thantwo years, and in that short time, it hasalready managed to reinvent itself. What

began as a small venture has expanded into a full-service, multi-pur-pose restaurant. “We started off a frozen yogurt cafe/brunch place,”executive chef Andy Dalan explains. “And it totally transformed into a

breakfast, lunch, dinner, late-night and pupu bar restaurant.”

“Because of our location andour atmosphere, we didn’t wantto just do brunch,” he says. “Wewanted to expand.

“When we opened, our conceptwas trying to make it like an L.A.type of cafe,” he says. Beforeopening, Dalan took a trip to L.A.with the restaurant’s founder tocheck out restaurants and break-fast cafes.

“It was just eating for twodays,” he says of the trip. “We wouldgo to about five restaurants in oneday, and just check out the trends.”The group came back to the Islandswith a range of unique flavors andinspiration to launch Yogurstory.

The elegant, yet welcoming atmos-phere at Yogurstory also boasts an

L.A. chic, with high ceilings, stunning lighting, and wall art and décor scat-tered across the dining room.

“We wanted to be different, and offer what Hawaii didn’t have,” he says.At the same time, Dalan, who was born and raised here in Hawaii, derives

a lot of his culinary inspiration from island foods. “Local and Asian food —that’s what I cook,” he says. “I also keep up with various other trends.Korean cuisine is a trend right now.” Dalan adds that Keeaumoku, oftendubbed “Koreamoku,” is the perfect place to cook up Korean-influenced dish-es. He also experiments with Filipino, Japanese and Chinese flavors.

Dalan has 20 years of experience in the restaurant industry, includingworking as a pastry chef at Roy’s Restaurant and a stint at Formaggio. Dalandraws on his experience as a pastry chef to create some of Yogurstory’ssweeter items including the ever-popular waffles.

“Nathan Aweau is one of myfavorite entertainers,” Chaowasareesays. “He has an amazing voice, espe-

cially with the song Lei Manoa. It’s myall-time favorite.”

Aweau is a celebrated, award-win-ning singer and was named “MaleVocalist of the Year” on two separateoccasions. With an affinity for jazz,he also claimed the honor of “JazzAlbum of the Year” for his albumtitled Bass Etude, which focuses onthe electric bass. In addition tothese accomplishments, Aweau alsois remembered for his role in thelocal music group Hapa. In 2005,Hapa released an album, Maui, which climbed up the BillboardMagazine’s World Music Chart andpeaked at No. 7.

waffles,” he says. The Red Carpet($9.95) waffles continue to be one ofthe most popular. But don’t miss outon Dolce De Leche ($9.95), a decadentjoy that features pecan pretzel crunch, caramel, dolce sauce, caramelizedbanana and whipped cream.

Not only has Yogurstory expandedits menu, but it also offers specialevents on the weekend. Every firstSaturday, the restaurant transforms intoa lounge at night, complete with a DJ,dancing and drink specials. Fridaynights during dinner, the restaurantplays host to live entertainment. Inthe future, Yogurstory hopes to expandits entertainment ventures.

Yogurstory also features specialdishes on Friday and Saturday fordinner. “Right now, one of the disheswe are doing is chow fun, but ourtwist is to add other, different ingre-dients.” Recently, the restaurant createdBacon and Choi Sum Chow Fun($8.95).

“We kind of changed it up,”Dalan says of the dish. “Locals arefamiliar with that noodle, but theydon’t usually have it with theseingredients.”

Changing things up seems to bethe status quo for Dalan and Yogurstory. And luckily for customers, Dalancan’t seem to keep his creativeenergy still. He says that Yogurstory

will continue to offer different specialsand introduce new menu items.Although there are no set plans, Dalanhinted that they may come out with adessert menu ― which could alsoinclude different types of waffles ―in the near future. “We want to keepthe customers excited and keep themcoming,” he says.

HukilauMy relentless search for another ah-maz-

ing Reuben led me to Hukilau. Located rightin downtown Honolulu in Executive Centreon Bishop Street, this upscale Hawaiian platelunch-style eatery gives diners much morethan your “typical” plate lunch. In fact, hereyou'll find — get this — a one-of-a-kindHouse Smoked Big Island Beef PastramiReuben ($12).

At first glance it appears to be like anyother Reuben, however, the secret to this oneis all in the meat. According to executivechef Jason Takemura, Hukilau only utilizesits house-smoked pastrami.

“We bring in Big Island beef briskets, brine it for 12 days and smoke it in-house,”Takemura says. “We infuse our own fla-vors through our own brine, and the smokethat we use is a mix of kiawe and applewood chips.”

If that alone doesn’t entice you, then Idon’t know what will. Any fan of a Reubenwill go crazy over this one. It’s served on

marble rye bread with a Russian dressing, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese.

Takemura says Hukilau’s Reuben sand-wich has only been on the menu for sixmonths, but has already proven to be a hitwith the lunchtime crowd.

“We usually only prepare it during lunch, but if someone requests the sandwich fordinner, we can prepare it for them,” he adds, noting that the dish also comes with frenchfries, sweet potato fries or Nalo greens.

Take it from me, it only takes one bite ofHouse Smoked Big Island Beef PastramiReuben and you’ll be hooked on Hukilau.

Wailana Coffee HouseI’m notorious for being nocturnal, and

thanks to Wailana Coffee House I’ve beenable to cure my cravings at such bizarre

hours of 3 or 4 a.m. when the rest of theworld is sound asleep. Open at all hours ofthe day or night, Wailana Coffee House, located in the heart of Waikiki, is home toyour American and local culinary favorites.

And there are just some things that tasteridiculously ono in the wee hours of themorning: one of them being Wailana’sCorned Beef Sandwich. Priced at $9.35,server Sylvia Noneza says this Americanclassic is extremely popular with patrons.Served hot, Corned Beef Sandwich definescomfort food, and is served with home-made corned beef, sauerkraut, melt-ed Swiss cheese and ThousandIsland dressing nestled withintwo pieces of toasted ryebread. A slice of pineapple, apickle, tomato and lettuceare presented as additionalgarnish offerings, and aside of french friescompletes the meal.

“It’s our corned

beef that really stands out because it’s madefresh in the restaurant,” Noneza explains.

And just when you thought that the flavorscouldn’t get any better, they do when youcapture the flavor of the Thousand Islanddressing in every bite. The taste is a force tobe reckoned with, making Wailana CoffeeHouse an absolute winner in my book.

Dear Hearts,

Taking care of your health

Is more important than accumulating wealth.

It should take priority over having fun,

Because when it comes to your body and mind,

Remember...you only have one.

BOWLED OVER WITH FLAVOR AT OSAKA RAMEN

For nearly a year, Osaka Ramen has attracteddiners from around the island with its qualitycuisine that is made fresh, served in large por-tions and priced to match any budget. Withhearty ramen dishes, superb combinationplates and tasty appetizers all available for

well under $10 each, owners Michelle Huang andZhen Wei Lin offer up tasty selections at an incred-ible value.

The eatery is located at Pearl Kai ShoppingCenter in Aiea, and accommodates up to 52 people— making it an ideal destination for a relaxingmeal, pau hana snack or family get-together.

Spicy Tan Tan Ramen ($7.50, $9.75 with a gyozaset) is a customer favorite, offering asesame-flavored broth containing spicypork, cucumber, bamboo shoots and a“secret” ingredient that ties all the boldflavors together with each bite.

Tonkotsu Ramen ($7.25) is anotherpopular soup dish, as it is “cooked along time,” allowing the flavors thatemanate from the sliced char siu pork, bean sprouts, garlic, egg and corn to sim-mer together. Miso Ramen ($6.50) repre-sents one of the menu’s best values, with a light butflavorful broth that pairs perfectly with the comple-mentary fresh chili garlic (available on each table)that diners are encouraged to add to any item for anextra kick of flavor.

“The Miso Ramen ispriced very reasonably, andit’s a very popular dish,”Huang says.

Osaka Ramen also isknown for its combinationdishes, including Mochiko Curry Combo ($9.25)that, like all available curry combos, includes misoramen soup, gyoza and fried rice. Chicken KatsuRamen ($8.95), as well as other ramen combos, also include fried rice and four pieces of gyoza.

And, as the summer days continue to heat up,Huang also recommends Cold Noodle ($7.25)

as a “perfect dish to cool youdown on a hot day.” The

offering includes a bed ofcold ramen noodles with

a tangy sesame sauce aswell as pork, bean sprouts,

crisp cucumber, egg and redginger.

In honor of the restau-rant’s first anniversarynext week, OsakaRamen now serves

Salt and Pepper Shrimp($9.50), which features asweet garlic flavor and is pre-sented on a bed of char siufried rice. And, as a special intro-

ductory offer for loyal DiningOut readers, the new dish isavailable through the next twoweeks for just $7.50.

The new shrimp dish, aswell as tasty appetizers —

including Gyoza ($3.50 for six pieces), SpicyChicken Wings ($3.50 for four pieces), Deep FriedWhole Garlic ($2.95) and the Spicy Menma ($3.50)— provide a perfect complement to Osaka Ramen’s

nightly Happy Hour Special. From 5 p.m.to closing every evening, all 12-ouncebottled beers are on special for just $2each.

“The gyoza is very popular; we makeit fresh in the morning for lunch, and

again in the afternoon beforedinner,” explains Huang.

“You can taste the freshvegetables in every bite.”

Planning a party or spe-cial event? Osaka Ramencan help with a variety ofparty platters starting at$19.99 with choices of

Chicken Katsu, SpicyChicken Wings, Fried Noodles

and more.
