Go into your student file and choose upload

If it is a Word document we can only read it we must convert it to a Google doc.
Click settings and then click convert uploaded files…
Notice now it says “conversion on”
Check the non Google doc and then click delete
Go again into upload andchoose to upload a file
Choose the file
Choose upload and share
With conversion on it now appears as a Google doc
