THIRTIETH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 25, 2020

A MESSAGE FROM FR. TIM

2

Of late we have had parables about the kingdom of God. Two weeks ago we had the story of the vineyard owner and the tenants. Last week we had the story of the king and the wedding feast. In both these stories Jesus is talking about the kingdom of heaven or the kingdom of God or in my words the City of God. Once again in each parable we are told of the numerous invitations to the people to enter the kingdom and in both parables many refuse. Each story talks about the fact that the messengers, the prophets, were ignored, beaten or killed. We come to appreciate that the vineyard owner or the king, depending on the story, is God, the messengers are the prophets, disciples, apostles, the Savior and today ourselves. In these two parables; the hearers reject the message. In today’s gospel we are looking directly at those who are persecuting Jesus. The Pharisees, not liking what Jesus has to say, fearing the power he has over the people, set out to trap him. Now these people are undoubtedly good people. They are undoubtedly rooted in their tradition. Jesus is talking about and doing things that are not in accord with the letter of the law or their understanding of what God is saying. So they set out to trap him. They ask him a question and Jesus sees right through them. He calls them hypocrites and gives them an answer to which they cannot object. Yet as we know Jesus persisted in preaching and living the Word. As we know the message cost him his life. I do not feel the Word of God is any more popular today then it was back then. I do believe that those who are proclaiming the word can be persecuted because it is not what some people want or expect to hear. In the first reading Isaiah quotes God as saying, “I have called you by name, giving you a title, though you knew me not. I am the Lord there is no other, there is no God besides me. It is I who arm you, though you knew me not, so that toward the rising and the setting of the sun people may know that there is none besides me.” In their attempt to trap Jesus the Pharisees asks Jesus; “Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar?” Holding a coin He responds; “Whose image is on the coin? They replied; “Caesar’s.” He said to them then give to Caesar what is Caesar’s.” In whose image are we created, whose imprint is on our being? “Give to God what is God’s” I am sure Jesus, in his humanity, did not like what God had to say to him when he learned he was to sacrifice himself for all of us. Yet one can bet that he took what he heard to prayer to make sure it was of God. Many of the prophets did not like what God was asking either but instead of dismissing it they took it to prayer to discern his will. I am sure St Joseph when he learned of the Blessed Mother’s pregnancy took it to prayer to make sure his actions were of God. I doubt that the Blessed Mother wanted Jesus to begin his public ministry but I am sure she took it to prayer and followed God’s will. We hear the Word of God all the time. Yet there are times that we dismiss what we hear for whatever reason. We may dismiss someone’s reflection on the scriptures for whatever reason. Having been created in the image of God and imprinted with his love and called by name is it not our responsibility as adult Catholic Christians to take the Word to prayer? Prayer being the activity in which I sit with what I have heard and ponder it, not in the context of what has been or what I have come to believe but in the context of God as revealed through Jesus Christ. The Pharisees did not do this. They heard Jesus’ message not with openness but with preconceived ideas. Not only did they loose out but they tried to silence the Prophet. I have called you by name. As St. Paul says, “For our gospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in power and the Holy Spirit and with much conviction. Having been invited to his kingdom he awaits our answer. The answer is dependent, however, with what degree of openness we hear the Word of God. Fr. Tim

A Gentle Reminder As this unprecedented time goes, we

may be apt to forget some of the safety precautions that we needed to put in place so that we could resume live

Masses. When you make a reservation, you are agreeing to:

Wear a mask at all times when in the church.

Bring hand sanitizer with you. Follow the usher to your assigned seat and remain in that seat at all times until

Mass is finished Leave the church immediately after

receiving Holy Communion by the door on the side of the church where you

were sitting.

We ask every one to understand that these commitments are to ensure the

safety of both priests and parishioners during this difficult time.

Blessings, Fr. Tim

Weekday Mass Intentions will now be celebrated on the weekend Masses except those on Wed & Fri.

If you have requested a Mass intention for someone during the week, we will be combining their name with the weekend Mass names until we are able to celebrate daily Masses at both churches.

Faithful Citizenship Several years ago the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops published a document entitled Faithful Citizenship, which addresses the issue and our obligation as Catholics to enter the poll with a well-formed conscience. The document is available online and is certainly worth reading at this time. The document outlines the manner in which one would go about forming conscience as we prepare for the elec-tion.

I would like to include a couple of quotes from the Bishop’s document. “Unfortunately, politics in our country often can be a contest of powerful interests, partisan attacks, sound bites, and media hype. The Church calls for a different kind of political engagement: One shaped by the moral convictions of the well-formed consciences and focused on the dignity of every human being, the pursuit of the common good, and the protection of the weak and the vulnerable. The Catholic call to faithful citizenship affirms the importance of political participation and insists that public service is a worthy vocation. As Catholics, we should be guided more by our mor-al convictions than by our attachment to a political party or interest group.”

“Catholics often face difficult choices about how to vote. This is why it is so important to vote according to a well-formed conscience that perceives the proper relationship among moral goods. A Catholic cannot vote for a candidate who takes a position in favor of an intrinsic evil, such as abortion or racism, if the voter’s intent is to support that position. In such cases a Catholic would be guilty of formal cooperation in this grave evil. At the same time, a voter should not use a candidate’s opposition to an intrinsic evil to justify indifference or inattentiveness to other important moral issues involving human life and dignity. There may be times when a Catholic who rejects a candidate’s unacceptable position may decide to vote for that candidate for other morally grave reasons. Voting in this way would be permissible only for truly grave moral rea-sons, not to advance narrow interests or partisan preferences or to ignore a fundamental moral evil.

When all candidates hold a position in favor of an intrinsic evil, the conscientious voter faces a dilemma. The voter may decide to take the extraordinary step of not voting for any candidate or, after careful deliberation, may decide to vote for the candidate deemed less likely to advance such a morally-flawed position and more likely to pursue other authentic human goods.

In making these decisions, it is essential for Catholics to be guided by a well-formed conscience that recognizes that all issues do not carry the same moral weight and that the moral obligation to oppose policies promoting intrinsically evil acts has a special claim on our consciences and our actions. These decisions should take into account a candidate’s commitments, character, integrity, and ability to influence a given issue. In the end, this is a decision to be made by each Catholic guided by a conscience formed by Catholic moral teaching.” All this being said, let’s us pray for discernment and guidance as we approach the pols in November.

THIRTIETH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 25, 2020 8

Let Your Voice Be Heard – Again “Say No to ROE” The state legislature has extended the session until January 5th, 2021. Please remind the members of the Joint Committee on Judiciary that you oppose the expansion of abortion in Massachusetts. Please call the Committee at 617-722-2396 and let them know you are opposed to H3320 and S1209 – the ROE legislation. Every telephone call helps!

Remember these bills would remove:

The requirement that young girls obtain consent before an abortion The requirement that efforts be made to save a living baby who survives abortion The requirement that late term abortions be performed in hospitals And the bills would allow abortion on demand for all nine months of pregnancy.

For more information about how the ROE legislation would expand abortion in Massachusetts visit www.macatholic.org Thank you!
