Reflection:

The Second Sunday of February, which is 40 days after we celebrated

the birth of our Lord, we have two celebrations, namely, the purifica-

tion of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Presentation of the Lord in the

Temple. These two celebrations have been fused together because ac-

cording to Jewish tradition, after childbirth, the mother is considered

unclean. According to Mosaic Law, the mother had to go to the temple

for purification and at the same time, the firstborn male is presented to

the Lord because the firstborn male belongs to God, "Every male that

opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord."

Mary and Joseph were obedient to the law. When the Archangel Gabri-

el told Mary at the Annunciation and to Joseph in a dream that the

child to be born is the Son of

God, and the Savior of the

World, they still submitted

themselves to the Law of God

given through Moses. Obedi-

ence is never easy because it

means surrendering one's self

to the authority of another per-

son. But for Jesus, Mary and

Joseph, it is not difficult be-

cause they are truly humble in

spirit.

A Special

Message of

Appreciation

Dear Parents and Guardians, During these past few days, the one word that filled my mind and heart is GRATITUDE. I am first grateful to God. His unconditional love, grace, and mercy are always present. He supported my parents who made many sacrifices so that I was able to graduate from both St. Joseph Parish School, and St. Francis High School. I believe my forty years as a Catholic School educator in this diocese is one way to give back in Thanksgiving for the many teachers and people who contributed to the person I am today. I believe everyone is created in God’s image and the daily challenge is to see God’s gift in each person, nurture it, and help them to be all that God calls them to be. Being a contributor to anyone’s faith and life journey is a privilege and a gift I truly treasure. Every new day is a gift from God. Both challenging and joyful experiences are opportunities to encounter God and to realize He always provides His love, His grace, and His mercy for whatever is needed. However, we must be steadfast in our faith in Him. I thank God and the many people who have impacted my life, inspired me, and modeled for me what it truly means to be a humble, loving, servant in this ministry of Catholic education because I know with God, everything is possible! On Wednesday, so many people planned and organized a very special and memorable assembly. Thank you for all the leis, cards, gifts, the special blessing by Father Eric, MS, the messages from Gwen Carranza and Representative Ty Cullen, who were both my students, the video of messages from each class, the special certificate from Representatives Ty Cullen, Henry Aquino, and the House of Representatives. In my commitment to be a lifelong learner, I continue to be educated by the students of our school, you the parents, our faculty and staff, our La Salette Priests, parishioners, and so many others. I am very appreciative of all the ways each person contributes to my life and faith journey. Please pray that I can continue being God’s servant and embrace whatever plans He has for the future. Have a very blessed week. Know that you are in my daily prayers and will always have a special place in my heart and in my life! With love and gratitude in Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, Ms. Beverly Sandobal

U.S. Bishop Chairmen Voice Opposition to Proclamation

That Further Restricts Immigration and Family

Reunification

WASHINGTON — The President issued a proclama-tion Friday restricting the issuance of immigrant visas to people from Burma (Myanmar), Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan and Nigeria. People from Sudan and Tanzania will no longer be eligible for certain visas to come to the Unit-ed States, commonly called “Diversity Visas.” Bishop Mario E. Dorsonville, auxiliary bishop of Washington

and chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bish-ops’ (USCCB) Committee on Migration, Bishop Jo-seph C. Bambera of Scranton and chairman of the

USCCB’s Committee for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs, and Bishop Jaime Soto of Sacramento and

chairman of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc., along with Sean Callahan, president and CEO of Catholic Relief Services, and Sister Donna Markham, president and CEO of Catholic Charities USA issued the following statement strongly disagreeing with the administration’s latest action: “The proclamation re-stricting immigration further undermines family reunifi-

cation efforts and will make ensuring support for forced migrants in the designated countries more diffi-

cult. This proclamation also serves as a painful re-minder of the 2017 ban which threatened our country’s founding principle of religious freedom. Over the last three years, waivers to allow visas from current travel ban nations based on undue hardship (such as family

illness) were supposed to be available but were al-most never authorized. We note with particular sad-

ness and have witnessed firsthand the trauma of fami-ly separation that occurs with travel bans, which will

only increase with this new proclamation. “We respect that there are challenges in assuring traveler docu-mentation and information exchange between coun-

tries as a means to ensure the safety of citizens. How-ever, we also believe that ill-conceived nation-based

bans such as this injure innocent families. As the bishops’ conference president Archbishop José

Gomez has stated. . . , ‘Welcoming families has al-lowed our country to integrate successive immigrant generations into the fabric of American life, allowing

them to contribute their faith, values and

talents to make this country great.’

“We urge the administration to reverse this action and consider the human and strategic costs

of these harmful bans.”
