A BLESSING OF THE TARTANS

On behalf of families of all nations, and in the name of all the families that are here represented, we present these Tartans before Almighty God in appreciation of our heritage; and we ask His blessings upon these, His humble servants. O Lord, Thou has promised that in all places where Thou recordest Thine Holy Name, Thou wilt meet with Thy servants, and bless them; fulfill now Thy promise, and make us joyful in our prayers, so that our worship, being offered in the name of Thy Son, Jesus Christ, and by the guidance of Thy Holy Spirit, may be acceptable unto You, and profitable unto ourselves. Bless, we pray, these Tartans—that they may be unto us and unto all people a token of the faith of our Fathers, and a sign of our service unto You. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

A History of St Andrew Saint Andrew (who is believed to have later preached around the shores of the Black Sea), was an agile and hardy Galilean fisherman whose name means Strong and who also had good social skills. He brought the first foreigners to meet Jesus and shamed a large crowd of people into sharing their food with the people beside them. Today we might describe him as the Patron Saint of Social Networking! Having Saint Andrew as Scotland's Patron gave the country several advantages: because he was the brother of Saint Peter, founder of the Church, the Scots were able to appeal to the Pope in 1320 (The Declaration of Arbroath) for protection against the attempts of English kings to conquer the Scots. Traditionally, Scots also claimed that they were descended from the Scythians who lived on the shores of the Black Sea in what is now Romania and Bulgaria and were converted by Saint Andrew. In the fascinating legend of The Voyage of St Rule from Greece to Scotland we can see the complicated spread of devotion to Saint Andrew - from Constantinople in modern Turkey, to St Andrews in Fife. St Rule (Regulus in Latin) and the six nuns and monks who took the long sea-journey with him, stands for the missionaries and monasteries who worked long and hard to bring the Good News to Britain. They lived in communities organised by a monastic Rule - hence the name St Rule or Regulus. As Scotland slowly became a nation it needed a national symbol to rally round and motivate the country. Saint Andrew was an inspired choice and the early Picts and Scots modelled themselves on Saint Andrew and on one of his strong supporters, the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great, whose statue you can see today in York, where he visited his father, a Roman General then trying to force the Picts to go back north. Although a pagan who worshipped the Roman sun god Sol, Constantine later became a Christian and went on to make Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. It all began near Rome in 312 AD when, on the night of a make-or-break battle against a rival emperor, he saw the symbol X P (Greek for the first two letters of 'Christ') in the dazzling light of the setting sun and then had a dream in which he was promised victory. Constantine ordered his troops to hold the Christian cross at the front of the army, and won.

In a similar way, around 500 years later, King Angus of the Picts, facing a larger army of Saxons at Athelstaneford in what is now East Lothian in Scotland, was overwhelmed by a blinding light the night before the battle and, during the night, had a dream. The message he was given was that he would see a Cross in the sky and would conquer his enemies in its name. The following morning King Angus looked into the rising sun and saw the Saltire Cross in its blinding light. This filled him and his men with great confidence and they were victorious. From that time Saint Andrew and his Saltire Cross were adopted as the national symbols for an emerging Scotland. The Saltire Cross became the heraldic arms that every Scot is entitled to fly and wear. However, its colour was not white at first but silver (Argent), as in heraldry white stands for silver. The first time the colour of the Saltire is mentioned is in the Acts of Parliament of King Robert II in July 1385 where every Scottish soldier was ordered to wear a white Saltire. If the uniform was white, then the Saltire was to be stitched onto a black background. Both William Wallace and King Robert the Bruce appealed to Saint Andrew to guide them in times of national emergency. The Saltire was flown on Scottish ships and used as the logo of Scottish banks, on Scottish coins and seals and displayed at the funerals of Scottish kings and queens - that of King James VI for example and of his mother, Mary Queen of Scots. At the Union of the Crowns in 1603, London was treated to the spectacle of Saint Andrew and Saint George on horseback, shaking hands in friendship. When King George IV visited Edinburgh in 1822 he was presented with a Saltire Cross made of pearls on velvet, within a circle of gold. There is also a wider dimension. Saint Andrew and his relics at St Mary's Metropolitan Cathedral, Edinburgh provides Scots with a special link to Amalfi in Italy and Patras in Greece (where two Cathedrals named after the saint also hold his relics). The many St Andrew Societies worldwide, set up originally as self-help organisations for Scots who had fallen on hard times, form a network of Scots who are all united under the Saltire Cross of Saint Andrew. They give Scotland a European and worldwide dimension. Written by Michael T R B Turnbull, author of Saint Andrew:

St Andrew’s Day Tales and Traditions

There are many tales and traditions from across the world that exist around St Andrews Day, here are some of the most famous:

Romania In Romania it is a time for magic rituals to ward off evil spirits and purify the land and the people. The secret weapon is garlic, eaten on the night before St Andrew's Day at a communal meal either as whole cloves or in a sauce. Cloves of garlic are placed strategically beside doors, windows and chimneys.

Poland Many people believe that Saint Andrew is the patron saint of Poland. In fact, it is Saint Casimir Jagiellon (1458-84). However, the last day of November in Poland is a night for charming and light-hearted games where girls can search for husbands and have their fortunes told.

Bulgaria In Bulgaria, St Andrew's Day is known as Edrei (Bear's Day). The story goes that Saint Andrew complained to God that he had no feast day, so God told him that any man who did not celebrate St Andrew's Day would have to carry his own horse! In olden times housewives would throw boiled corn onto the fire to stop the bears ruining their crops. One legend records that an evil stepmother was punished by having her daughter turned into a bear.

Ukraine In the Ukraine, St Andrew's Day is celebrated on 13 December with fortune-telling and parties where pancakes and pastries were used for games which were supposed to help girls find a husband. It was also a time for mischievous pranks such as putting a plough on a house roof or taking a gate off its hinges - all pre-Christian traditions connected with courtship and marriage.

Germany German folklore advises single women who wish to marry to ask for St Andrew's help. The night before the 30th, if they sleep naked, they will see their future husbands in their dreams. Young women should also note the location of barking dogs on St Andrew's Eve, as their future husbands will come from that direction.

Religious Celebrations In churches all over over Europe, the last day of November is a day to remember the Apostle who gave his life for spreading the Good News. In Patras (built on the shores of the Ionian Sea and the third largest city in Greece), the Cathedral of St Andrew close to the sea, is packed with worshippers, who then spill out into the streets for the dramatic and colourful procession where the relics (housed in a silver shrine) and the icon (holy painting) of Saint Andrew are carried, accompanied by chants and prayers. Further west in the Mediterranean, on the southwest coast of Italy, facing the Gulf of Salerno, is the picturesque port of Amalfi. There, the Cathedral of Saint Andrew, sitting at the summit of steep and wide steps, glitters with gold mosaic. Inside, are the relics of the saint and his magnificent silver statue which is then carried out around the streets and squares of Amalfi to celebrate the Saint's day. Today, the magnificent 18th century St Andrew's Cathedral in Kiev, with its white and pale blue walls, its green onion domes fringed with gold, stands where many earlier churches were built to commemorate the hilltop where St Andrew is believed to have put up the first Christian cross. Many wooden churches were built there, destroyed by marauding armies or simply pulled down. Here the feast of St Andrew is still celebrated every year.

JAMES OF JERUSALEM

BISHOP AND MARTYR (23 OCT NT)

James of Jerusalem is referred to in the New Testament as the brother of Our Lord Jesus Christ. He was for many years the leader of the Christian congregation in Jerusalem, and is generally supposed to be the author of the Epistle of James, although the Epistle itself does not state this explicitly. Peter, about to leave Jerusalem after escaping from Herod, leaves a message for James and the Apostles (Acts 12:17). When a council meets at Jerusalem to consider what rules Gentile Christians should be required to keep, James formulates the final consensus (Acts 15:13-21). Paul speaks of going to Jerusalem and conferring there with James (Gal. 1:18-19), and speaks again of a later visit on which James, and the other "pillars," placed their stamp of approval on the mission to the Gentiles (Gal. 2:9). A few verses later (Gal. 2:11-14), he says that messengers from James coming to Antioch discouraged Jewish Christians there from eating with Gentile Christians. On his last recorded visit to Jerusalem, Paul visits James and speaks of his ministry to the Gentiles (Acts 21:18). Outside the New Testament, James is mentioned by the Jewish historian Josephus, who calls him "the brother of Jesus the so-called Christ," and reports that he was much respected even by the Pharisees for his piety and strict observance of the Law, but that his enemies took advantage of an interval between Roman governors in 62 AD to have him put to death. His death is also reported by the second-century Christian writer Hegesippus. Numerous references in early Christian documents show the esteem in which he was held in the early Church.

by James Kiefer

PRAYERS - Grant, we beseech thee, O God, that after the example of thy servant James the Just, brother of our Lord, thy Church may give itself continually to prayer and to the reconciliation of all who are at variance and enmity; through the same our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and ever. Amen.

LEO THE GREAT BISHOP OF ROME, DOCTOR (10 NOV 461)

Leo I (440-461) and Gregory I (590-604) are the only two bishops of Rome commonly called "the Great." Leo, at a time when the capital of the Empire had been moved to Constantinople, and the government even in Italy no longer had its headquarters at Rome, was the most important official in the city. To him fell such prosaic tasks as supervising the distribution of grain imports and reorganizing the municipal fire department. When Attila and the Huns invaded Italy in 452, he negotiated their withdrawal, and when Gaiseric (or Genseric) the Vandal captured Rome three years later, it was Leo who prevented the total destruction of the city. It is perhaps not surprising that the theory of papal supremacy gained much ground in his day. In his day there were disgreements about the correct way to state the truth that Jesus Christ is both God and man. In 449 Leo wrote a letter (known as the Tome of Leo) to Bishop Flavian of Constantinople, in which he affirmed that Christ has two Natures in one Person. The letter was read in 451 by the Council of Chalcedon (the fourth Ecumenical Council), and judged by them to be sound doctrine. It contributed much to the creedal statements of that council. Leo's influence on church government will naturally get mixed reviews. But for his defense of the belief that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, all Christians may thank God.

by James Kiefer

PRAYER - O Lord our God, grant that thy Church, following the teaching of thy servant Leo of Rome, may hold fast the great mystery of our redemption, and adore the one Christ, true God and true Man, neither divided from our human nature nor separate from thy divine Being; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

Notes From Our Senior Warden

Update on Selection of Priest in Charge

Dear St. Andrew’s Family and Friends,

We have all been praying for spiritual help and guidance in the selection of a new priest in charge of St.

Andrew’s and wanted to let everyone know that the process is having some success.

Two candidates have been identified and most of the vestry members have had an initial meeting with

both of them. There is an interview scheduled in the week of 8 October with one of them and hope to have a

date scheduled for the other for sometime in the third week of October. Both candidates appear to be a good fit

for our parish so a lot of prayer will be helpful in discerning God's will in this selection process.

I want to reassure our St. Andrew's family, your vestry is not taking this task lightly. Please continue to

pray with us as this process continues.

In His and your service,

Bill

Update on Chair Lift Loan Repayment

Dear Friends,

As many of you know our chair lift failed a while back and this necessitated our purchase of a new lift.

The Diocese generously loaned us the funds to go through with the purchase and installation but, we had to pay

the piper so to speak. We are paying the Diocese back at an agreed upon rate of $400.00 a month. Gifts in May

allowed us to draw down the principal by $3000.

The principal on the loan was $20,018.76. Gifts from parishioners and friends have been coming in

earmarked for repayment of this loan and as of September 18th

the amount has been reduced to $13,418.76.

Gifts for the continued payment of this loan are always welcome.

The Rt. Rev. Carl Walter Wright

VII Bishop for the Armed Forces and Federal Ministries

3101 Wisconsin Avenue NW

National Cathedral Library

Washington, DC 20016

Dear Bishop Carl,

Greetings in Christ’s love.

What a delight and blessing it was to have you worship with us on Sunday, 27 August 2017!

We know, as Bishop for the Armed Forces, you have no pastoral obligation to St. Andrew’s,

and knowing how busy your daily routine has become, it makes your visit home all the more

special.

Please know how overjoyed your Saint Andrew’s family was with your visit! What a glorious

day of celebration it was! Beginning with our celebration of the Eucharist, with special music (though

some coerced) to the “blessing of everything in sight” – our beautiful side altar,

hand crafted lectern, the CWW piano (thank you!) and the “lift-e-vator” – and ending with a wonderful

Burger Burn lunch with enough food to feed the neighbors. Everyone attending the

picnic and a visit from Jackie Marconi, must let you realize how much we love and miss you

and how proud we are to call you “our” Bishop for the Armed Forces.

Thank you. Thank you for your words of teaching and encouragement. Thank you for your

presence. Thank you for your love. Thank you – Thank God! – for you.

Safe travels, always, as you globally share His word and may the Peace of God and the Love

of our Lord and Savior be always with you.

In His Service and on behalf of your St. Andrew’s family,

William Forkgen, Senior Warden

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church

Pasadena, MD 21122
