FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER - MAY 10, 2020
A MESSAGE FROM FR. TIM
2
Many years ago now I remember a Spiritual Director said to me; always remember the voice of the Lord. I know I have told you this story before but every time I hear this Gospel passage it comes to my mind. Once when I was directing a retreat one of my directees told me a story of her first-hand experience of shepherds and their sheep. She told me that she herself did not like the imagery. She did not like be compared to a dumb and dirty animal. At one point in her life she was in Holy Land making a retreat and she told her director of her feeling about the imagery. He asked her to follow him. He took her out into the country and asked her to sit. She asked for what and he said just sit. Eventually she saw, coming from various directions, several shepherds and their sheep. While the shepherds gathered together and talked, the sheep grazed and mingled. When it was time to leave, the shepherds called their sheep and the sheep followed the voice they were familiar with. In the gos-pel we hear Jesus say, “I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me.” In my mind the questions that present themselves to us are; do we believe that God speaks to us, do we know the voice of the shepherd, God, and are we willing to follow Him? In the words of Martha to Jesus in John’s gospel, “I have come to believe.” Last week we heard the two on the road to Emmaus reflect upon their experience with the stranger who turned out to be Jesus. In their reflection they said to one another were not our hearts burning inside as we listened to him break open the scriptures? During this Easter Season and this pandemic I have been looking at the gospels and the different man-ifestations of the Risen Lord to the Apostles and to us. As I said before, hindsight is one of my best teachers. In the Gospel of the two on the Road to Emmaus is it not in hindsight that they recognize what was happening inside of them as they listened to Jesus. So it is in Ignatian Spirituality. St. Ignati-us urges us to pay attention to what is happening inside. Most often what happens is that when one has an encounter with God, an experience of God, or hears the voice of God the individual will expe-rience some type of reaction that they could not possibly have created for themselves. I would like to share three different instances of this with you. Several months after my brother died I went to Eastern Point for a Retreat. Just to give you a picture, the chapel is on the ocean side of the building. As you walk into the chapel you see across the room to a big bow window overlooking the ocean. In the center of the window is the tabernacle. So when you look at the tabernacle the backdrop is grass, sky, and ocean. As I walked into the chapel and looked at the tabernacle with this backdrop this feeling overcame me that I knew God was saying my brother was with him. It was not anything I asked for or consciously looking for; it was pure gift but there was no doubt in my mind where it came from and what it was saying. Another time when I was discerning whether it was time to leave my assignment as a parochial vicar and become a pastor I went to a meeting at another parish. The sister leading the meeting opened the meeting with a song entitled the Galilee Song. When I heard the words to the chorus and the feel-ing of peace they brought about, I knew the Lord was asking me to move. This song has been very instrumental in my life over the years. The words to the chorus are; “So I leave my boats behind, leave them on familiar shore, set my heart upon the deep, follow you again my Lord.” As I mentioned in the column From the Desk of Fr. Tim in praying about the people involved in the acts of vandalism I distinctly heard the words; “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” I recognized that as the voice of God because it was not where I was at or what I was thinking but along with those words came peace. It is in recognizing his voice and accepting what he says, and following his guidance that we experi-ence the peace that he offers.
Fr. Tim

Join us every Sunday at 10:00 AM on the web Until we are allowed to be together again
Once again it was good to be with you Sunday as we celebrated the Fourth Sunday of Easter. I am very grateful to all who make this experience possible. I look forward to the time we will be able to gather to-gether in our churches and celebrate a Eucharist together. I realize that we can become restless and want this to be over but we need to listen to the guidelines being offered and take this one step at a time. Social distancing and wearing masks seem to be part of our im-mediate future. We will be looking at how we can safely celebrate the Eucharist and the Sacraments of Confirmation, Holy Communion, and Matrimony. In addition to these liturgies there will be a number of Me-morial Masses celebrated for those who have died during this time. In the meantime keep us all in your prayer, be safe and stay well.
Blessings

Some Straight Talk about Our Finances
First, let us say how grateful we are to everyone who has been so generous in supporting your parishes during this crisis. You are truly amazing, and we cannot express how inspired we are by your support. So we want to let you know that we are trying harder than ever to make every dollar of your money count! Here is what we have done of the steps we have taken in the last few weeks: -We have taken a line of credit from the Archdiocese of Boston to make sure we don't empty our bank ac-counts. Without weekend liturgies, we have no collection monies coming in. We are still responsible to pay the reduced salaries and benefits for our employees, plus heating and electricity costs, telephones, water bills, and routine maintenance of our buildings and grounds. These bills are substantial. Please continue to support your parishes by mailing your Offertory and Monthly Collection envelopes to the Collaborative Office, or come by yourselves and drop them off. If you would find it more convenient to donate online, go to our website at www.sauguscatholics.org and you will find a link for Online Giving. Click there and follow the prompts to contribute to your own parish. Or you can pay through your own bank by setting up ei-ther Blessed Sacrament or St. Margaret's as a payee. However you choose to do it, we appreciate your continuing support. Stay safe, and we all look forward to when we can meet again as a community of faith!
Collaborative Members Only– We are here for you! Both St. Margaret and Blessed Sacrament, Saint Vincent de Paul Society, whose church members are in need of food, at this time, should contact them at 781-233-2497 with your name, address,
telephone number and the number of members in your household.
