THE MOST HOLY TRINITY SUNDAY – JUNE 16, 2019

A MESSAGE FROM FR. TIM

2

“All powerful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, by water and the Holy Spirit you freed your Sons and Daughters from sin and gave them new life. Send your Holy Spirit upon them to be their Helper and their Guide. Give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence. Fill them with the spirit of wonder and awe in your presence.” This prayer is prayed over all of us as when we were confirmed. What does the Pentecost event mean to us? We can answer saying it is the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles. We can further elaborate that because of this gift they were emboldened to go forth and proclaim fearlessly the Good News of Jesus Christ. We can also say it is the birthday of the Church Although all this is true, is there not more to it than that? As the centuries have passed we profess that the Spirit of God is still among us and in fact dwells within us. Yet what does that mean? As a child, preparing for the sacrament of Confirmation, I memorized the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit. I knew them well at that time but really did not see or feel any tangible change after the receiving the sacrament and promptly forgot what the gifts were. Listen to an excerpt from that prayer again: “Give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence. Fill them with the spirit of wonder and awe in your presence.” I remember a quote someone told me who had at-tended BC High’s Commencement Mass. He took this quote from the senior who offered a reflection. In the reflection he said; “Was it that Jesus was without sin, or that he was fully man and chose good, time after time?” In the humanity of Jesus how was he able to do that? In his humanity did he not turn to the Divine for inspiration and strength? In the Farewell Address Jesus says, “follow me.” In other excerpts he says “learn from me.” One way in which we are asked to do that is follow the example of Jesus and turn to the Divine, or the Spirit who is at hand that we might enabled to choose the good. When in situations that call for a decision, a response; look to the Spirit, the ways of Jesus; call upon the Spirit that we might choose the good.

One might ask how do we know what is of the Spirit,

look to the fruits of the Spirit, chapter 5 in St. Paul’s

letter to the Galatians. If an action or a response brings about love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; it is definitely of God. If an action or a response brings about works of hatred, rivalry, jealously, outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness, dissensions, factions, occasions of envy, and the like; then they are of the evil one. In a recent experience of mine where there was an action called for, I found it helpful to pray to God that my response and action be of him. In doing so it caused me to stop and ponder before responding. There are two roads to take. With prayer, reflection, and the guidance of the Spirit one will be directed to the higher road which will be noted in the fruits of the Spirit. In the words of Robert Frost; “two roads diverged in a yellow wood….and I chose the one less travelled by and that has made all the difference.”

Fr. Tim

For All Pastoral Visitors The Annual Pastoral Visitor Breakfast will be held at the Pastoral Center on June 22. As you know, we ask that all pastoral visitors take advantage of at least one opportunity to strengthen your faith life per year. This is a wonderful chance for you to do just that. This program is titled: The Paschal Mystery and the Pastoral Visitor, and the presenter is Mary Ann McLaughlin. For those of you who have never heard Mary Ann McLaughlin, she worked for many years in the Archdiocesan Office of Spiritual Life and her programs are excellent. The breakfast will run from 9AM to noon. If you can make it, please let Linda Riley know so we can give them a head count. Also, you can let us know if you will need a ride. We’re aware that

Braintree is not a short trip, but we’re sure this program will make it worthwhile.

The Saint Vincent de Paul Society of Saint Margaret and Blessed Sacrament would like to thank you for your thoughtful support each week.

With your help we are able to help those less fortunate. Thank you,

Seminarians Collection This week’s second collection supports the formation and training os seminarians in the Archdiocese of Boston for future service as priests. We are blessed That many are responding to the call to serve as priests. Please be generous on their journey toward their ordination to priesthood.
