TWENTIETH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 16, 2020

A MESSAGE FROM FR. TIM

2

Every time I hear the story of Peter walking on water, I recall a quote from a book entitled, Challenge of Jesus, written by John Shea. In the book, reflecting on the Story of Peter John Shea states; we can either go through life as “wave walkers or boat huggers.” I love the im-agery that comes with that. Think of what is happening in the gospel. Peter challenging Jesus in a sense when he says, “Lord if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” As the story tells us “Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he realized how strong the wind was he became frightened; and began to sink, he cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter.” What is happening here and how does this apply to us? Think about Peter is being called out of his comfort zone into the unknown. Peter knows he cannot walk on water but he steps out of the boat with his eyes on Jesus. When the surrounding elements distract him, he looses focus, fears, and falls flat on his face. Yet in turning to Jesus he is pulled from the water. I wonder if after that he continued his journey, trusting in the Lord. I wonder if we cannot apply that to ourselves. We have been called to step into the unknown. As we live through this pandemic we are faced with many unknowns and firsts. Yet Jesus is re-minding us that we do not have to do this alone. Look to the image that we are given in the story, Peter looses sight of the Lord, doubts and falls flat on his face. Yet whose hand reaches out and brings Peter to safety. The one he doubts, the one he questioned, the one he loss sight of is the one whose arm leads him to safety. When looking to Peter we see what happens when we allow the surrounding talk, fear, past his-tory get in the way; we fall flat on our face. Peter accomplished what was humanly impossible as long as his focus was on God. The beauty here is that no matter how many times we fall if we turn to Jesus he will pull us up and put us back treading the water. If we look to the Old Testament Reading from the Book of Kings we have the story of Elijah who is looking for the Lord. He looks for him in the extraordinary but finds him in the everyday experience. He looks for him in the heavy wind, in the earthquake and in the fire but does not find him. Yet he finds him in the gentle whispering wind. The story of Elijah encourages us to recognize God in the simplest and everyday events of life to trust he is there for us. The challenge before us is to step out of the boat, the comfort zone, and walk the water, trust-ing the Jesus will enable us to do what we need to, trusting that he will be there to pick us up when we fall and encourage us to keep treading the waves. In the words of John Shea, we can either be “wave walkers or boat huggers.” Which is God calling us to? Fr. Tim

From the Desk of Fr. Tim, As this pandemic continues with no end in sight, people are getting impatient and want this pandemic to be over. In our desire to return to “normalcy” there is the temptation to bypass the guidelines. It is important to remember that these guidelines are in place not only for our safety but also for the safety of the people we come in contact with. As in the story of Peter walking on water that we heard last Sunday Jesus is telling us that we do not have to deal with the pandemic and the surrounding effects by ourselves. He was there for Peter and he is there for us. Just as Jesus answered Peter’s call for help, he will answer ours as well. We just have to ask.

Fr. Tim

A Gentle Reminder As this unusual summer goes on, we

may be apt to forget some of the safety precautions that we needed to put in place so that we could resume live

Masses. When you make a reservation, you are agreeing to:

Wear a mask at all times when in the church.

Bring hand sanitizer with you. Follow the usher to your assigned seat and remain in that seat at all times until

Mass is finished Leave the church immediately after

receiving Holy Communion by the door on the side of the church where you

were sitting.

We ask every one to understand that these commitments are to ensure the

safety of both priests and parishioners during this difficult time.

Blessings, Fr. Tim
