CORPUS CHRISTI – JUNE 23, 2019

A MESSAGE FROM FR. TIM

2

Today, we celebrate one of the great mysteries

of our Faith the Holy Trinity, one God yet three

persons. For me when faced with a mystery of

our faith I like to come to some understanding

that I can identify with. In other words something

that works for me; that I can put a handle on and

helps me with my life. When I think of the Trinity

I look to the Father who, in creating us, gave us

everything we needed to be happy. When we

lost that because of sin He gave us His Son to

redeem us and to show us how to live life. The

Son lived among us, as one of us, He revealed to

us who the Father is and who we are. He died

for us and rose from the dead. In doing so, He

redeemed us and won for us eternal life through

His life, death and resurrection. He basically

showed us that good rises above evil. He called

us to follow him.

Vatican II really opened the doors for the Spirit.

Many of us grew up the Father, Son, and Holy

Ghost. No one really talked about the Holy

Ghost; as we did not understand it. With Vatican

II there was much more of an emphasis on the

third person of the Blessed Trinity than I ever

remembered before.

For me, when I think of the Holy Spirit I think of

the Spirit in terms of God directing us to the

fullness of life. Remember in Jesus’ farewell

address he said He has told us all this that “His

joy maybe ours and our joy maybe complete.”

Remember also in this address He prays that we

maybe one as He and the Father are one. His

plan is for unity and He has given us His spirit to

help us accomplish just that.

Recall the words to the prayer at Confirmation

By water and the Holy Spirit

You freed your sons and daughters from sin

And gave them new life.

Send your Holy Spirit upon them

To be their Helper and Guide

Give them the Spirit of Wisdom and

Understanding

The Spirit of Right Judgment and

Courage,

The Spirit of knowledge and rever-

ence.

Fill them with the Spirit of wonder

and awe in your presence.

At Pentecost, we are reminded that

we have all been gifted with the

Spirit of God. As we celebrate the

feast of the Holy Trinity we are

reminded of God’s unconditional love

for us and His call to follow Him. The

Trinity calls us to reflect on what is

ours and what can be ours if we

include God. In St Paul’s letter to the

Galatians St Paul reminds of what

happens when we ignore the gifts we

have been given. Working without

the Spirit results in acts hatred,

rivalry, jealousy, outburst of fury, acts

of selfishness, dissensions, factions,

occasions of envy. In contrast He says

in the Spirit there is love, joy peace,

patience, kindness, generosity,

faithfulness, self-control.

One might ask which one is more

predominant in today’s society or in

my life. If we worked more with the

Spirit; would a more felt presence of

God make a difference? If we all

worked for unity, practiced acts of

kindness and used self-control; would

things be different? Remember Jesus

started with twelve. What a

difference He has made!

Fr. Tim
