Use a quick piece method for creating this timeless �ying geese pattern. Jo Morton’s new collection, ‘Carolina’, by Andover Fabrics was used in this example. When using a vertical strip/border print for the plain fabric rows, adjust fabric yardage needed accordingly. Allow printed lines on the fabric to provide seamlines.

Cutting Instructions

Crib Throw Twin Full Queen King

Light Fabrics - 5 1/4” strips 7 9 18 21 24 36Dark Fabrics - 2 7/8” strips 15 19 38 44 52 76Plain Fabric Rows - Vertical Stripes - 3“ strips (may vary depending on fabric chosen) Cut 6 Cut 7 Cut 10 Cut 12 Cut 13 Cut 16

Cut 5 1/4” light fabric strips into 5 1/4” squares.

Cut 2 7/8” dark fabric strips into 2 7/8” squares.




Flying Geese Unit - This quick piece method makes 4 units. Make the required number of units per row for desired quilt size.

Layer one light fabric 5 1/4” square with two dark fabric 2 7/8” squares right sides together as shown. The dark squares will overlap by 1/4” as shown.

Draw a line on the dark fabric squares as shown. Drawn Line

Stitch 1/4” from both sides of drawn line.

Stitching Lines

Cut on drawn line.

Quick Piecing Four Flying Geese Units

Press seam allowance to darker fabrics.

Draw a line diagonally on the wrong side of the remaining two 2 7/8” squares.


Place remaining two squares right sides together on the �ying geese units as shown.

Stitchin 1/4” on both sides of the drawn line.



Cut on drawn line. Press seams toward the dark fabric.

Cut the four ‘nibs’ that are sticking out even with the edge of the unit. This will prevent problems when piecing the units together.

Continue making these units until the number required for each row of quilt size is reached.

Sew two �ying geese units together as shown using a 1/4” seam allowance. Press seam toward top geese unit. Continue adding �ying geese units to row until desired number for quilt size is reached.





Sew a row of �ying geese units to a plain fabric/border strip, right sides together, using a 1/4” seam allowance. Press seam toward plain strip.

Continue sewing vertical rows together until desired quilt size is reached. Press all seams toward the plain strips.

Piece quilt backing as necessary. Layer quilt backing, top and batting together. Quilt as desired. Sew on binding.
