Clarkston Facility Development Update

To be sure that you know about Terri Engel Peterson and Dean Smith’s new calls/positions:

Pastor Terri Engel Peterson, formerly Pastor of Christ the King Lutheran Church in South Bend, Indiana, will be installed as Pastor-in-Charge of St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in Elkhart, Indiana on Saturday, November 4, 2017. The parish is 150 years old this year and is located in downtown Elkhart.

Pastor Dean Smith, Youth Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Owatonna, Minnesota, for the past 15 years, will become the Director of Spiritual Programs on the staff of the Appalachian Service Project in Johnson City, Tennessee. The ASP organizes mission trips in the central Appalachian region of the United States. Last year, 16,2321 volunteers served, providing critical home repairs for 493 families an building 26 new homes.

Both grew up at Calvary and were part of our youth group. Terri is an M Div graduate of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, South Carolina (now affiliated with Lenoir Rhyne University) and Dean is an M Dvi graduate of Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota.

October 27th and 28th in honor of the 500th Anniversary of Martin Luther’s Reformation, Calvary’s Staff & Council presented Pastor Jonathan with a commemorative stole. The congregation joined in the celebration with a shared moment of celebration and prayer.

While it is very exciting to expand and enhance our facility in Clarkston, the greater task is building our lives according to the purpose and example of Jesus. We are entering the home-stretch of our 40DAYS UNDER CONSTRUCTION Spiritual Growth Journey and the theme continues to reign true….we are all UNDER CONSTRUCTION as God’s people.

There is still time to get involved and I invite you to fill an “empty chair”, “come as you really are and become more!”

“Unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted.” Psalm 127:1a (NLT)

I have asked that each person at Calvary say YES to this 40DAYS’ journey and commit to participate in seven (7) live-transforming ways:

1. HEAR all weekend messages, listening to podcasts if you must miss worship, so you can be empowered to take your next “construction” step along the Spiritual Growth Pathway: ENTER | ENGAGE | EQUIP | EXTEND

2. READ the daily “building, growth and construction” themed Bible verses to help you ENTER into God’s presence.

3. CONNECT with a small group to ENGAGE in sharing and learning with others. We have over 20 Under Construction groups to choose from, or you can start your own using the weekly guides!

4. REMEMBER the weekly themed memory verse, to EQUIP and build yourself up with God’s Word.

5. SERVE on Community Impact Weekend Nov 4th-5th, to EXTEND God’s love to others outside our walls.

6. PRAY for us to prepare well, as individuals and as Christ’s church, for the responsibilities and opportunities for ministry that will grow and expand with our extended square footage.

7. SHARE three (3) minutes of welcoming hospitality and friendly conversation with someone new (or new to you) each weekend.

Come as you really are . . . become more!!

As our building expands we will each have an opportunity to joyfully participate in both personal spiritual growth and in expanding Calvary’s vision for ministry and mission in our communities. I encourage you to prayerfully make a commitment to get involved. It’s not too late. I believe that you desire to grow spriturally and that you desire our church to grow in impact. DON’T MISS IT: YOUR ROLE!!

I HOPE, trust and pray that you are as excited as I am about our kick off of PHASE. We had our first pep rallies in October and they were full of energy and eye opening connections. This is the power of PHASE Gatherings. They are prime opportunities to see how connections and relationships are filled with power and the Holy Spirit. Where we get to see how the children and youth in our lives connect us and how we can leverage these connections for the path ahead.

Feel like you’ll never get out of the sea of diapers? You’re not alone. Feel like you couldn’t possibly watch another impromptu ‘production’ or see another lego creation? You’re not alone. Feel like you’ll scream at the next slammed door or eye roll? You’re not alone. Feel like you don’t know where the time has gone? You’re not alone. At each of these ‘phases’ we have distinctive opportunities to leverage not only their physical development, but more importantly their spiritual development.

If you’ve ever met a child or a youth (which applies to all of us, right?), it’s your ROLE to seize that PHASE, and we want to help you do just that. That’s what we’ll be doing at our very first Don’t Miss It Gathering, focusing on knowing “your role” on Thursday, November 16th at 7:00 at our Clarkston Campus.

This ministry focus grows out of a nationwide program called Orange. Several of us were blessed to attend the Orange Tour when it came to Troy, MI recently. I just wanted to share some takeaways that might intrigue or inspire you to join us on Thursday, November 16th at 7pm at the Clarkston Campus. The overall message was: Show up, Be consistent, Be present !

So Join Us! That’s your HOPE challenge for November: “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Roman 15:13, NRSV).

Our children and youth are the HOPE of our present and future. Abound in hope. Don’t miss it!!

Giving Thanks

This month, we will turn to thanksgiving. We will think of family and friends as the holiday season comes into view. For some it will be a tough horizon to live through. For others it holds many firsts, and still others cannot wait for all that the end of the year holds. However, as Christians we seem to live into the holidays a bit differently. There is an entire piece of the horizon that can hold our attention, it gives us a focus on new beginnings, new birth! Of course, I am referring to the celebration of God’s only begotten son Jesus Christ. However, before we begin Advent and really explore Jesus birth we will celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday.

This holiday can be a wonderful time of sharing and being with one another in peace and comfort. Many people celebrate with large feasts and family favorite deserts. Some take time off from school and careers to have fun, to relax and unwind from the pressures of living. Many travel and enjoy old traditions that have lived through many generations of Thanksgiving celebration. Picture taking gets super serious and these are quickly passed around to thousands and in some cases millions! I often joke about getting 100 likes on some of my Facebook posts by calling it going viral! Ah, maybe someday!

But how will you give thanks this Thanksgiving? How will you allow your felt sense of God’s gift of Jesus---to you personally---shine forth into the world? Perhaps we can start by simply praying a prayer of Thanksgiving to God “from whom all blessings flow.” I will certainly thank God for each of you this Thanksgiving as our family stands around the Thanksgiving table. For whom will you be thankful? Join me this November in lifting up daily one or two or even more people, giving thanks in our prayers and thoughts. I encourage you to ask others about the people or issues they are praying for on that day. What a wonderful opportunity to listen to someone you know talk about someone you may not!

“Lord God, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us

S T E W A R D S H I P U N D E R C O N S T R U C T I O N

On a recent Sunday, words from Pastor Jonathan and a note in the worship folder, pushed my thoughts towards stewardship. in the folder were the words, "stewardship is 'simply taking care of." Pastor Jonathan talked about" I love our Church," and 40 days of Under Construction.

Two stories from the Bible came to my mind. One is Nehemiah about building the walls of Jerusalem as the people returned from exile. There were many obstacles the people had to overcome, even an enemy that wanted to stop them by disrupting the building. Nehemiah had to order the posting of guards to prevent this. Well I don't expect that we will have to do that.

However I did consider what will we have to do to be good stewards, take care of, while we are Under Construction. We have an opportunity to be in constant prayer for those who are working on our building. It will be like we are standing guard over them while they are laying the stones.

There will be times of inconvenience and disruptions to our schedules and wants or needs. Flashed thru my mind was spouses hanging wallpaper. I tell myself that this will be the times to take on the heart and mind of a servant. It is not easy to have the first words be, " how can I serve you," but to be a good steward I need to be mindful and to keep at it.

The second story comes from the movie, " The Bible." The scene is Peter is sitting alone and he looks like he is carrying the whole burden of guilt from the things he did or did not due from the time of the Last Supper to his present time of sitting there. As Peter turns his head, the camera follows, and we both see Jesus sitting there. Jesus turns and smiles and Peter smiles back.

This image is so strong for me as I think about Under Construction. Jesus smiles because He knows that Peter is still Under Construction and rather than leave Peter in disrepair, He is here to complete the construction of Peter. Jesus is happy to complete His work in Peter. Jesus is the ultimate Steward, the one who takes care of us.

Peter is smiling because he is happy to have the Master Carpenter with him again.

This time for us and our church will be exciting. While Under Construction we will have the opportunity to be good stewards, taking care of things that need to be done and caring for people who have needs. At the same time we are doing these things, the Master Carpenter and Steward is doing His work on us and through us. We are Under Construction.

It brings a smile to my face.

Calvary volunteers meet at Waypoint Free Methodist Church on Dixie Hwy off I75 on the 4th Wednesday of each month at 5pm. Six people are needed for about an hour each month. BIAB packs 400 backpacks each week for children from Clarkston area schools. Volunteers also help move bins after they are packed and breakdown tables. We are also looking for a Ministry Leader to represent Calvary at Blessings in a Backpack each month. If you are interested in either of these opportunities, please submit an intouch card.

Pontiac Community Orchards While hypersensitive to using the “P” word, our Friendly Forest event was about as close as it gets, this side of Heaven - pretty close to “Perfect.” Amazing weather - 72 with a slight breeze, but no wind; warm cider in a cauldron on the grill; apple, pumpkin and cherry donuts on the picnic table; and members of Calvary’s Men’s Ministry brought chili dogs to share. This celebration also featured a kid’s activity area to include pumpkin stamping, leaf painting and more, graciously hosted by our neighbor, Nadia and her preschool-aged sons. The fun didn’t stop there. The team was seen spinning on the playset and pushing kids on swings; handing out flutiphones with music books; and singing and visiting with many new neighbors. The day couldn’t have been better for the Pontiac Orchard Team! Better Together!

Actually, the only thing better would be seeing you there next year. Be a part of it! Feel the undeniable connection with the Holy Spirit every time. If you are able to step out of your comfort zone and share by hosting activities with seasoned team members and friends in the neighborhood, please submit an intouch card. This is a great opportunity for families to "live it" together with shared service. No prior experience needed. This month, we begin a monthly newsletter feature to help us focus on how we can Extend Peace and Justice. We will highlight opportunities to grow awareness and involvement with important issues we face in our world such as racism, human trafficking, environmental concerns, refugees, hunger, poverty, etc. These are very important issues for us as people of faith and though we may have differences about exactly how to respond, we can together engage in dialogue to be informed and prayer so that we can “strive for justice and peace in all the earth.”

The Affirmation of Baptism service used for Confirmation and for receiving new members is including these words:

You have made public profession of your faith. I now ask each of you, do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in Holy Baptism as you grow and journey along the Spiritual Pathway: to live among God’s faithful people, to hear God’s Word and share the Lord’s Supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of out Lord Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth?

Anti-Racism Training Update

Last month, Intern Pastor Ken Greble, Rebecca Couser and Mathew Rainoldi attended a 2 1/2 day anti-racism training workshop in Livonia. Each of them were deeply changed after participating in this training! They would love to discuss their experience and new understanding of the social justice issues that are so prevalent in our world today and welcome an opportunity to chat. Here’s just a sneak peak of some of what they have to share…

“After attending the ‘Anti-Racism’ training, I have gained a better understanding of how racism has affected our past and it brought to light the realities of systemic racism that still exist today. I now feel more equipped to have courageous conversations with others about this serious topic.” -Rebecca Couser

“The experience was an eye opener, to say the least, to a systemic problem of racism in the world.

The seminar helped me to better understanding that everybody has prejudice within themselves, but with open dialogue and loving hearts, we can begin the healing from a problem that goes far beyond any one person's responsibility. I know racism isn't my fault but I need to really be open and listen to others so I can be better about not contributing to the problem and become part of the solution in my church, home and work life.” -Mathew Rainoldi

“I have participated in a number of trainings regarding anti-racism over the past three years. Each time, I am better able to understand the dialogue that is needed regarding racism and its presence in our world today.” -Intern Pastor Ken

Those who are serious about addressing the systemic racism that exists in our world, do not point out individuals, they point out systems that have been created - in many cases long ago. They are looking at systems in all parts of our society that may contain racist policies and practices. Understanding this issue is more complex than one discussion can solve. However, there is hope that through many conversations, we can all get strong enough to heal the damage that this evil has done to ALL people; and to strip away the walls that have been built because of misguided blame and retributive actions from all races and cultures. It is this team’s hope that we can each become less afraid to engage in productive conversations regarding this one social issue among the many that exist. The Great Influenza of 1918 Then and Now

If you have done any genealogy research at all, you have likely seen evidence in your own family tree of the devastating loss of life due to influenza* outbreaks and the complications of flu (pneumonia, meningitis, etc.) in the pre-vaccine/pre-antibiotic era of our nation, most notably in the 1918-19 world-wide pandemic called the Great Influenza.

Now, as millions of doses of this year’s influenza vaccine become widely available, many are left wondering whether the flu shot is right for them. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), everyone older than 6 months of age should get the influenza vaccine as soon as it becomes available in your area, with rare exceptions. Flu season in the U.S. has historically peaked around January and February, but can begin as early as October. It takes about 2 weeks for your body to develop the maximum immunity benefit from the shot, and immunity will last for the entire flu season (October-March.) This year again, only the injectable flu vaccine is recommended (not the nasal spray version, which proved to be less effective.)

The overwhelming majority of people who get sick with flu will have their symptoms resolve in a few days. Those most at risk for flu-related complications are people with weakened immune systems, such as seniors, pregnant women, children, people who travel abroad, and people with health conditions or disabilities. It’s extra important that these people get the flu shot. The flu vaccine can’t give you the flu. However, the vaccine can give you a sore arm and a low fever. Many people who believe that the flu shot gave them the flu were likely infected by another person just before or around the time they received the shot.

While getting the flu shot is still the best protection available against this illness, there are other ways to stay healthy. The influenza virus is usually transmitted via droplets travelling up to 6 feet through the air, originating from an infected person’s cough or sneeze. Stay away from sick people if you can, and cover your own coughs and

sneezes for the benefit of others. Wash your hands frequently, with a solid 15 seconds of scrubbing. Try to avoid touching your own eyes, nose and mouth when hands are potentially contaminated. Lastly, if you do end up with the flu, do yourself and everyone else a favor by staying home, if possible.

*Influenza refers to a respiratory virus characterized by sudden onset of fever, cough, body aches, chills, and extreme tiredness (not to be confused with viral gastro-enteritis, commonly called “stomach flu” which may cause fever, vomiting and diarrhea.) The flu vaccine does not prevent acute viral gastro-enteritis.
