The suffix of Bhai with the name of Abdul Ghafoor was not just coincidental. Thetowering personality of Ghafoor Bhai carried an elegance which makes it immediatelybefitting. Joined Dow from the National College with Zafar, Shahid Masood, NajmulAarifin, Munir Khakwani, Aijaz Khalid, Sultan Lakhani et.al. While in Dow, Specialevent linked with Ghafoor Bhai and Zafar was their immigration from HyderabadDeccan, India before they joined National College. In Dow a whole clan of celebritiessurrounded him. On top of all is the Zafar Singer with Ghazala, Amir Ali, and AijazKhalid. Ghafoor Bhai wore a metallic frame, tailor made for his immaculately shavenface. Another identity was a golden ring that continuously festooned his middle finger. Asoft spoken man with a low-pitched voice, who enjoyed the reverence of their verycoherent group.

Aijaz recalls visiting Ghafoor Bhai’s residence in Azizabad where other classmates visitedhim for combined studies. Ghafoor had a special knack of learning Anatomy by drawingand redrawing simple diagrams to get a concept. That was very innovative and original.Bhai passed Anatomy with distinction. Fazal, Shahid Masood, Munnawar Munoo allenjoyed the academic mergers and the delicious culinary delights that Ghafoor Bhai’smother prepared so fondly to please his friends. When they were tired of studies thenearby Arshi Cinema was available for the late night shows. Veteran actor Nadeem had hisdebut time in those days. “Anari” and “Pehchan" turned out to be blockbusters of the era.

Times changed with graduation and Ghafoor Bhai started working for a stint at AbbasiShaheed Hospital and the purpose was to save some money for US immigration whichhas always captivated him. The plan was successfully implemented. Ghafoor did BoardCertification in Neurology. He started practice in Arizona. He also wrote a treatise onAlzheimer’s Disease which was his special line of country. Ghafoor Bhai believes that thishas done him proud. With the passage of time the self-made Ghafoor Bhai steadied in USthough keeping a low key image. Despite of so many years his original academic imagehas not faded as yet. Humility, toil, perseverance and purposiveness all has contributedto an unsung hero of Dow Batch of ‘79.

Thanks Shoaib and Khalid for gentle and down to earth GHAFOOR bhaitwo years ago I talked to him and made a plan to meet in Vegas but it could not materialize but he talked in same DOW tone.hope he will be able to join us next year in ifties hospital in Kashmir his expertise in Alzheimer's may be required for young leadership in muzaffar abad well done GHAFOOR BHAIsee you some time some where take careShershah

Dear Shoaib,Khalid and Aijaz,Thank you for Picking Ghafoor Bhai. Myself and Shuja ragged Ghafoor Bhai and Zafar after they came to Dow. They of course presumed we were seniors. During that ragging session we both liked mild mannerism and Hyderabadi accents and had to give in due to our own connection to Hyderabad. My father and Shuja's mother were from Hyderabad.
