OFFICE OF THE BISHOP

Statement from Bishop Oscar Cantú and the Diocese of San Jose regarding shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival Our hearts are heavy with sadness in the wake of the horrific shooting that claimed the lives of at least three inno-cent victims and injured several others at the Gilroy Garlic Festival on Sunday. I am grateful for the first responders and individual citizens whose quick thinking and professional actions saved countless lives. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, survivors and their families in this time of sorrow. May God, the source of our faith and strength, grant comfort and hope to all those affected by acts of violence. May grief give way to healing and grace, as we work together to protect the innocent and prevent future massacres, so that peace may prevail in our hearts and communities.

August 4, 2019 Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Joseph Cathedral Basilica: As we begin a new program year this fall I want to take the opportunity to highlight some of the ongoing ser-vices and new initiatives here at St. Joseph Cathedral Basilica. This week I want to provide an update on our ongoing collaboration with Catholic Charities in our social ministries outreach. The transition to the new location at John XXIII Multi-service Center on the corner of 5th Street and San Fer-nando has been successful. Most programs moved in early February and the medical clinic successfully relo-cated in May. The space at the Multi-service Center is more conducive to this ministry and its location better meets the needs of the vulnerable population we serve. While the outreach services at the center are now pro-vided in collaboration with Catholic Charities, the work of the center remains an essential ministry of St. Joseph Cathedral Basilica Parish. Your continued support in the second collection on the first Sunday of each month provides vital funds for this ministry. The parish will continue to host the annual Season of Hope in prepara-tion for the Christmas Holidays; proceeds from the Sea-son of Hope go directly to the Social Ministries Pro-gram. In partnership with Gardner Family Health Services the clinic has long provided essential services medical to uninsured persons. The parish recently received a $12,000 grant from The Catholic Community Founda-tion of Santa Clara County to offset the cost of the clin-ic. This annual grant provides essential funds for the clinic. The Social Ministries Program is being honored by San Jose City Councilperson Raul Perales on August 21 at 1:30 pm for its outstanding work among the homeless population at “The Window” in downtown San Jose. I congratulate Sharon Miller and the entire Social Minis-tries staff on this well-deserved recognition. Well done! Fr. Joseph M. Benedict, Pastor

¡Bien hecho! P. Joseph M. Benedict, Párroco

Jesus instructs his disciples and the crowd on how to be ready for the coming judg-ment. A crowd of many thousands has gathered to hear Jesus. At first he speaks only to the disciples, reminding them that it is not persecution they should fear but

the judgment that is coming for all who do not acknowledge the Son of Man. Suddenly a man in the crowd shouts out to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” He seems to have grown tired of Jesus speaking only to the disciples. Je-sus uses the question to teach what, in light of the com-ing judgment, life really consist of. Jesus tells the crowd a parable. A rich man's lands have yielded more crops than expected. His response is not to consider how he might share all the extra food with others but to won-der how he can possibly store it all. He has what he thinks is a brilliant idea: to tear down his present barns and build larger ones. Then he will have many things stored up for years of eating, drinking, and making mer-ry. “You fool” is God's response to this man because that very night his life will be taken away. To whom will everything belong then, God asks. The rich man's world is small, just him and his possessions, and now he learns that he is to lose his life. What good are his pos-sessions now? Jesus states that this is how it will be for everyone who stores up treasure for himself or herself but is not rich in what matters to God. Centuries later St. Gregory the Great taught that when we care for the needs of the poor, we are giving them what is theirs, not ours. We are not just performing works of mercy; we are paying a debt of justice. Life does not consist in possessions but in sharing what we possess with others. The goods of the earth have been given to everyone. Loyola Press

S aint of the Week Saint John Vianney May 8, 1786 – August 4, 1859

A man with vision overcomes obstacles and performs deeds that seem impossible. John Vianney was a man with vision: He wanted to become a priest. But he had to over-come his meager formal schooling, which inadequately prepared him for seminary studies. His failure to compre-hend Latin lectures forced him to discontinue. But his vi-sion of being a priest urged him to seek private tutoring. After a lengthy battle with the books, John was ordained. Situations calling for “impossible” deeds followed him everywhere. As pastor of the parish at Ars, John encoun-tered people who were indifferent and quite comfortable with their style of living. His vision led him through severe fasts and short nights of sleep. With Catherine Lassagne and Benedicta Lardet, he established La Providence, a home for girls. Only a man of vision could have such trust that God would provide for the spiritual and material needs of all those who came to make La Providence their home.

His work as a confessor is John Vianney’s most remarkable ac-complishment. In the winter months he was to spend 11 to 12 hours daily reconciling people with God. In the summer months this time was increased to 16 hours. Unless a man was dedicated to his vision of a priestly vocation, he could not have endured this giv-ing of self day after day. Many people look forward to re-tirement and taking it easy, doing the things they always wanted to do but never had the time. But John Vianney had no thoughts of retirement. As his fame spread, more hours were consumed in serving God’s people. Even the few hours he would allow himself for sleep were disturbed frequently by the devil. Who, but a man with vision, could keep going with ever-increasing strength? In 1929, Pope Pius XI named him the patron of parish priests worldwide.

Fr. Victor’s Trip to México Pronunciation is probably one of my weaker are-as when speaking Spanish. Sometimes I find peo-ple don’t understand what I’m saying. So here in Zapopan with my teacher, I’ve been doing some Spanish tongue twisters. See if you can do one: Tres tristes tigres comen trigo en un trigal. And my favorite Pancha plancha con cuatro planchas ¿Con cuántas planchas plancha Pancha? Were they hard? Tongue twisters can be a fun exercise to help with your pronunciation. One thing that I’ve been doing that has been quite fulfilling is doing daily confessions. Alt-hough I may not be able to fully understand them, I can still see God’s grace working through the Sacrament. It truly has been a gift to be able to experience it even in another language. I hope to learn more so that I can be a better instrument of God’s grace in the Sacrament and bring what I learn here to the parish. You are all in my prayers. P. Victor
