The Quinceañera is a traditional celebration

of life and gratitude to God on the occasion of the 15th birthday of a young Hispanic woman. You are invited to inquire about the Quinceañera program at the Cathedral. The teen must be baptized and have received the sacrament of First Communion. It is required that the teen participate in all sessions of Catechetical formation that will lead to a deeper understanding of what it means to have a Quince Años celebration. Ways to Support St. Joseph Cathedral Parish

Sunday Collection

The parish depends on the Sunday collection for

operational expenses. The Sunday collection is

not simply a means of financial support, it is an

expression of our faith. The Sunday collection

unites our work with the mission of the Church.

Online Giving

Online giving is a convenient way of

contributing to the parish. It provides

consistent support on a regular basis. It

streamlines recordkeeping and provides

credit card rebates and miles.

Donations of Stock

Direct donations of stock can shield the

donor from capital gains tax. Donations

are handled through a trusted broker with

the proceeds benefitting the identified par-

ish or diocesan ministry.

Direct Contributions from an IRA

There are tax advantages to making

donations from a qualifying IRA. The

entire contribution is tax deductible and

earnings within the IRA are not subject

to federal income tax.

Wills and Bequests

Please consider a legacy gift to St.

Joseph Cathedral Parish. Wills and be-

quests can be directed to specific parish

ministries or to offset operational

expenses.

One Time Donations

One time donations are a thoughtful way

to support the parish at times of financial

gains such as the sale of property, an em-

ployment bonus, or an unexpected

windfall.

Contributions to the St. Joseph Cathedral

Endowment

Several years ago an endowment for St. Joseph

Cathedral Parish was established with the Cath-

olic Community Foundation of Santa Clara

County. The endowment is managed by the

Catholic Community Foundation and annual

proceeds are distributed to the parish to help

defray operational costs and grow parish minis-

tries. The principal of the fund cannot be ac-

cessed by present or future pastors. Additional-

ly these funds are independent of the Diocese of

San Jose and cannot be redirected for other pur-

poses.

Become a Registered Parishioner of the

Cathedral Parish

If you regularly attend Mass at the Cathe-

dral, please consider becoming a registered

parishioner. Your contributions will be rec-

orded and acknowledged after the year is

done plus there are other benefits as well.

Please give our parish office a call so that

we may assist you. (408) 283-8100

Discipleship at One Hour a Week

One Hour of Financial Support

Consider basing your weekly contribution to St. Joseph

Parish on your salary for one hour of work. This works out

to 2.5% of your weekly income.

One Hour of Prayer

In addition to Sunday Mass consider praying for 10 minutes

a day. One hour a week. The prayer could be silent, pray-

ers you learned as a child, or simply speaking and listening

to the God who loves us.

One Hour of Service

Consider offering one hour of service each week as an ex-

pression of discipleship. The service might be in the parish

or through other organizations that share our concern for

families, the poor, the isolated and sick.

Today we hear about how Jesus, continu-ing on his journey to Jerusalem, heals 10 lepers. This story is a lesson about faith and reminds us that faith is sometimes found in unlikely places. Ten people af-

flicted with leprosy cry out to Jesus. Struck with pity, Jesus heals all 10. However, only one is described as glorifying God and returning to thank Jesus. The one who returns is a Samaritan, a foreigner. In the Jewish circles in which Jesus lived, Samaritans were looked down upon because of the differences between the two communities in their observance of Judaism. It is signif-icant, therefore, that Jesus commends the Samaritan for his faith, which has been his salvation. Throughout Luke's Gospel, faith is found in surprising places.

A nother lesson for us in this Gospel has to do with salvation. All 10 of the lepers were given the gift

of healing, but in his gratitude to God for this gift, the Samaritan found salvation. Our salvation is

found in recognizing the gifts we have been given and knowing to whom we must offer our thanks.

Loyola Press Saint of the Week Blessed Marie-Rose Durocher October 6, 1811 – October 6, 1849 Marie-Rose Durocher was born in a little village near Montreal in 1811, the 10th of 11 children. At 18, when her mother died, her priest brother invited Marie-Rose and their father to come to his parish in Beloeil, not far from Montreal. For 13 years, Marie-Rose served as housekeeper, hostess, and parish worker. She became well-known for her graciousness, courtesy, leadership, and tact. When Marie-Rose was 29, Bishop Ignace Bourget became bishop of Montreal. He faced a shortage of priests and sisters and a rural population that had been largely deprived of educa-tion. Bishop Bourget himself found-ed four communities, one of which was the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. Its first sister and reluctant co-foundress was Marie-Rose Durocher. her spiritual director, Oblate of Mary Immaculate Father Pierre Telmon, urged her to found a community herself. Finally Marie-Rose agreed, and with two friends, Melodie Dufresne and Henriette Cere, entered a little home in Longueuil, across the Saint Lawrence River from Montreal. With them, 13 young girls assembled for boarding school. Marie-Rose was 32 and would live only six more years—years filled with poverty, trials, sickness, and slander. The qualities she had nurtured came forward-a strong will, intelligence and common sense and great inner courage. Marie-Rose Durocher was beatified May 23, 1982 by St. Pope John Paul II. Her Liturgical Feast Day is October
