Jesus said to his disciples:

"Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer

and rise from the dead on the third day

and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins,

would be preached in his name

to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

You are witnesses of these things.

And behold I am sending the promise of my Father upon you;

but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high."

Then he led them out as far as Bethany, raised his hands, and blessed them.

As he blessed them he parted from them and was taken up to heaven.

They did him homage and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy,

and they were continually in the temple praising God."

June 2, 2019

Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Joseph Cathedral

Basilica:

Yesterday morning two men, Victor Trinidad and John Hoang,

were ordained as priests for the Diocese of San Jose. Both of

these men discerned their vocation, the call from God, and re-

sponded generously. They have dedicated their lives to or-

dained ministry in the Church in the name of Jesus. Their re-

sponse is inspiring.

Their response to God’s call highlights the Church’s under-

standing of vocation. The Second Vatican Council clearly

teaching that each of us receives a call from God; each of us

participates in the universal call to holiness. Christian vocation

is not reserved to those called to ordained ministry. Vocation

is a disciple’s response to God’s call to marriage, religious life, single life, or ordained ministry.

We often hear of a “vocation crisis in the Church”. This term is most often identified with the decline

in the number of persons entering religious life or seminary studies. A more expansive understanding

of a “vocation crisis” is a loss of awareness that marriage, family life, and the call to live as a faithful

single person are true and essential vocations. This lack of awareness diminishes our mindfulness of

the significance of God’s work in our midst.

Bishop Cantú has recgnized the need to raise our consciousness to the shared universal call to holi-

ness and to create a “culture of vocation”. Bishop Cantú has entrusted each parish and school com-

munity with a crucifix which he blessed at a recent mass celebrating his twenty-fifth anniversary of

ordination. He has asked that this crucifix be passed from family to family each week. The family is

asked to pray each evening for this emerging “culture of vocation”. Each family can choose how they

will pray. Some may choose to pray the rosary others may wish to use the prayer resources that will

be provided. Bishop Cantú further encourages each family to discuss Christian Vocation and how this

is realized in the life of each individual and each family.

At the Cathedral the crucifix will be exchanged at Sunday mass following communion. The exchange

will occur this month at the 10:00 am mass. We will also include resources in our Sunday bulletin so

all can join in prayer and reflection so all can assist in creating a “culture of vocation”.

Sincerely,

Rev. Joseph M. Benedict

Pastor

Today is our liturgical celebration of the

Ascension of the Lord, when Jesus was taken to heaven on the 40th day after Easter. In Cycle C, our Gospel is taken from the conclusion of the Gospel of Luke. There are similarities in the reports of Jesus' Ascension found in the Synoptic Gospels—Mark, Matthew, and Luke. In each account, Jesus assigns his disciples the task of proclaiming the Gospel to the entire world. There are also notable distinctions. In the Gospels of Mark and Matthew, the disciples are sent by Jesus to baptize as well as to preach. In Luke's Gospel, however, this commission to baptize is absent. Instead, Jesus di-rects the disciples to return to Jerusalem to await the fulfillment of his promise to send them the Holy Spirit. Curiously, only Mark and Luke actually report Jesus' Ascension into heaven. Matthew's Gospel concludes with Jesus' promise to remain with his disciples forever. Only the Gospel of Mark notes that Jesus ascended to sit at the right hand of God. In noting this, Mark teaches that Jesus' Ascension affirms the glory Jesus received from God after his death and Resurrection. Those who believe in Jesus will be empowered to do what Jesus himself has done. Already in Mark's Gospel, during his ministry, Jesus sent his disciples out to preach, to heal, and to drive out unclean spirits. Now, they are sent again to do these things and more. From his place with God in heaven, Jesus helped his disciples, and he continues to help us as we try to live as his fol-lowers. Loyola Press

S aints of the Week Marcellinus and Peter (d. 304) Marcellinus and Peter were prominent enough in the memory of the Church to be included among

the saints of the Roman Canon. Mention of their names is optional in our present Eucharistic Prayer I. Marcellinus was a priest and Peter was an exorcist, that is, someone authorized by the Church to deal with cases of demonic possession. They were beheaded dur-ing the persecution of Emperor Diocletian. Pope Damasus wrote an epitaph apparently based on the report of their executioner, and Constantine erected a basilica over the crypt in which they were buried in Rome. Numerous legends sprang from an early account of their death. Why are these men included in our Eu-charistic prayer, and given their own feast day, in spite of the fact that almost nothing concrete is known about them? Probably because the Church respects its collective memory. They once sent an impulse of encouragement through the whole Church. They made the ultimate step of faith.
