PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE As we enter our 112 th year of sisterhood, it is with great pride, honor and excitement that I begin the second year of my term as your Delta Alumnae Executive Council President. Delta continues to make a positive impact both on and off campus, embracing the challenges it has been presented with during these unprecedented times and moving forward in a positive and uplifting manner. Delta Executive Council remains one of, if not the strongest, Greek Alumni Organization and I am more than thrilled to be working with this warm, inviting, intelligent and dedicated group of women who serve on our Executive Council. There are not enough words to thank each one of them for their tireless efforts and all they do to keep our sisterhood organized, vibrant and forever strong. We are incredibly fortunate to start the 2021-2022 year with our officer positions filled and already working hard for all of you: Ivy Scott (President), Liz Hind (President-Elect), Kailey Hatfield-Odero (Vice President), Mary Nolan (Secretary), Luann Bangsund (Treasurer), Natalie Veal (DEI Representative), Lori Hatfield (Editor in Chief/House Chair), Teri Grossman (Historian), Claudia Newton (Primary Advisor), Heather Thomas (Webmaster) and Justine Doyle and Allie Williams (Young Alumnae Liaisons). Executive Council positions are two-year terms (except President who serves one year as President-Elect prior to her term and one year as Past-President after her term) so we are always looking for new faces who are interested in joining our team. We have also been fortunate to expand our Alumnae Chapters into Washington State (Psi Chapter, President TBD) and Nevada (Pi Chapter, Co-Presidents Lindsay Schoener and Lisa Burkhead). There is some interest in a chapter that would cover both Washington and Oregon so since the Psi Chapter is currently between leadership and an Alumnae Chapter has yet to be officially established in Oregon, if you have an interest in a combined effort and are willing to help get it going, please contact Kailey Hatfield-Odero at [email protected]. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

As we enter our 112th year of sisterhood, it is with great pride, honor and excitement that I begin the second year of my term

as your Delta Alumnae Executive Council President. Delta continues to make a positive impact both on and off campus,

embracing the challenges it has been presented with during these unprecedented times and moving forward in a positive and

uplifting manner. Delta Executive Council remains one of, if not the strongest, Greek Alumni Organization and I am more than

thrilled to be working with this warm, inviting, intelligent and dedicated group of women who serve on our Executive Council.

There are not enough words to thank each one of them for their tireless efforts and all they do to keep our sisterhood

organized, vibrant and forever strong.

We are incredibly fortunate to start the 2021-2022 year with our officer positions filled and already working hard for all of you:

Ivy Scott (President), Liz Hind (President-Elect), Kailey Hatfield-Odero (Vice President), Mary Nolan (Secretary), Luann

Bangsund (Treasurer), Natalie Veal (DEI Representative), Lori Hatfield (Editor in Chief/House Chair), Teri Grossman (Historian),

Claudia Newton (Primary Advisor), Heather Thomas (Webmaster) and Justine Doyle and Allie Williams (Young Alumnae

Liaisons). Executive Council positions are two-year terms (except President who serves one year as President-Elect prior to her

term and one year as Past-President after her term) so we are always looking for new faces who are interested in joining our

team.

We have also been fortunate to expand our Alumnae Chapters into Washington State (Psi Chapter, President TBD) and

Nevada (Pi Chapter, Co-Presidents Lindsay Schoener and Lisa Burkhead). There is some interest in a chapter that would cover

both Washington and Oregon so since the Psi Chapter is currently between leadership and an Alumnae Chapter has yet to be

officially established in Oregon, if you have an interest in a combined effort and are willing to help get it going, please contact

Kailey Hatfield-Odero at [email protected]. We are also exploring the possibility of creating a virtual chapter (name

TBD) to accommodate our sisters that live many miles from the nearest in-person chapter. If you have an interest in helping

move this idea forward and/or in joining the virtual chapter, please contact Heather Thomas at

[email protected].

Even if time does not permit you to commit to one of the larger leadership roles as outlined above, belonging to an Alumnae

Chapter is a fun and rewarding way to get and stay involved and connected to Delta sisters of all ages. In addition to the out

of state chapters mentioned above, we currently have Alumnae Chapters in Redlands, Orange County, San Diego and the San

Fernando Valley area. Our Alumnae Chapters are our core and are responsible for all the annual events everyone enjoys

attending. Our chapters make events and activities including “Cuca’s and a Cold One”, the Birthday Luncheon and Silent

Auction/Raffle and the Mother Daughter Tea/Recipe Boxes for graduating seniors possible. The chapters are always excited to

welcome new members and Executive Council welcomes the opportunity to help sisters explore starting a new chapter in

their area. Please contact Kailey Hatfield-Odero as indicated above if your purple spirit moves to you get something going

where you live.

As we look forward to a return to some sense of normalcy, please plan to attend our annual “Cuca’s and a Cold One”

Homecoming event at the Delta House hosted by the Omega Chapter. We anticipate the Mother Daughter Tea will be in-

person as well, hosted by the Alpha Chapter. Lastly, won’t it be fun to finally gather at the Oakmont Country Club for the 112th

Birthday Luncheon hosted by our Delta Chapter in May? I hope to see you in October and again in May!

In Delta,

Ivy Gross Scott ’90

P.S. While there is a lot of important information in the Fall Newsletter, please be sure to read the article on the 2021 Birthday

Luncheon – A Virtual Affair to Remember. I want to make sure those involved in its planning and execution are properly

acknowledged including Kelly Feeney who headed the effort. I also want to be sure you are up to date on the planned

development of the University’s south campus and its potential impact on the Delta House, so please be sure to check that

article out too.

LET’S LEARN TOGETHER

Have you explored the Lavender Learning Roundup? I hope you will take advantage of this excellent opportunity to learn and

grow together as you stay up to date on the latest Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) news and resources. There is power

through understanding, and it is our duty to actively listen, learn, and challenge ourselves to build community by embracing

the true meaning of diversity, equity, and inclusion. In case you missed it, visit deltakappapsi.celect.org/dei-newsletter to

A live streamed virtual Commencement ceremony was held in honor of the Class of 2021 on Friday, April 30. Spring Delta

President, Kelly Klish, shared the following about her graduation experience as part of the Class of 2021, “Graduation this year

was very different than a normal year. Being able to celebrate with close friends and family was great but the experience was

definitely bittersweet.”

Never women to let anyting, much less a pandemic, stop them from grabbing some fun photos, Deltas celebrated their virtual

DELTA KAPPA PSI TURNS 111!

On May 1, 2021 Delta held its first (and hopefully only) virtual Birthday Luncheon – A Virtual Affair to Remember. Delta recipes

were sent in advance to those attending in case they wanted to whip up something to enjoy during the event. We had over

100 register and more than 80 attend online at one time – thank you to those who participated! A few attendees even posted

photos of their food which was fun.

A site to purchase Delta swag was introduced and is still available. The small profit goes toward our Named Awards so please

check it out at www.cafepress.com/deltakappapsiuofr. As a part of the formal program, we heard from the Executive Council

President, the Initiated/Active Member President, and we had a financial update and request for dues. The Delta Woman of

Distinction award was presented posthumously to Virginia (Ginnie) Moses Hunsaker ‘57.

The entertainment began as we broke out into chat rooms first by decade and then by geographic location. It was great to

have the opportunity to catch up with sisters that may not normally be able to attend the luncheon because of the distance.

We finished up with some Delta songs, crafted by Claudia Newton and the Initiated/Active Members.

None of this would have happened without the “purple village” that took the time and went to the effort to put it together. I

want to give a huge thank you to Becky Callihan, Justine Doyle, Syrah Gerth, Teri Grossman, Lori Hatfield, Deborah Miller-

Calvert, Holly Nolan, Ivy Scott, Heather Thomas and Allie Williams for their support.

I am super excited to see everyone in person at our 112th Birthday Luncheon in May. For those out of the area, would you be

interested in watching a portion of the event live on Zoom? You would be a part of the presentation of reports and awards

and then during lunch you could participate in breakouts by decade and region again. If interested, please email me at

[email protected] so I can track how many are interested and determine whether the interest warrants the effort

involved.

112TH BIRTHDAY LUNCHEON PREVIEW

We look forward to the time we can finally gather in friendship and song as usual! The luncheon in celebration of Delta’s 112 th

birthday will be held, as was supposed to happen in 2010 and 2011, at the picturesque Oakmont Country Club in Glendale, CA

on Saturday, May 7, 2022. The Delta Chapter will serve as our hosts. Watch the website for details as they unfold with

complete information to be provided in the 2022 Delta Doings!

NOW MORE THAN EVER “THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME”

Sometimes you do not truly appreciate what you have until it is gone. For Delta sisters, that is certainly the case with not

being able to live in or gather at the Delta House during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is hard to fathom the fact that many

women who joined in spring 2021 have never seen the inside of the Delta House nor can they appreciate how fortunate Delta

is to have such a wonderful home to call their own.

After 17 months closed, the Delta House will have three amazing women living in it for the 2021-2022 academic year:

Δ Jaida Mitchell ’22

Δ Anna Fukahara ’23

Δ Kylie Robinson ’24

We thank these women in advance for 1) their willingness to share their “home” with up to 75 of their sisters, (2) their work to

ensure the Delta House remains the best house on campus and (3) leaving the house as clean and tidy as they found it in the

fall when they move out at the end of the year. Since there was no access available during the pandemic, the “to do” list for

the house will be developed by the women as they move in and Alumnae House Chair, Lori Hatfield, will work to make their

wants and needs (within reason) a reality.

Since the University is requiring seniors to live on campus for the 2021-2022 academic year, our women will have to maintain

a fine balance between hosting events at the house and the house remaining the pristine place we have come to know and

love. Delta Alumnae should have confidence in their ability to strike and maintain this balance knowing the Alumnae Advisors

will help guide the Initiated/Active Members in the process.

Monetary donations to the House Fund are always welcome, appreciated, and put to good use. Information on how to

donate to the House Fund is included elsewhere in this newsletter. Please email Lori Hatfield at [email protected]

regarding anything Delta House related.

DELTA ADVISOR TEAM UPDATE

The Delta Alumnae Advisor Team has kicked off fall 2021 with the challenge of helping bring in-person life back to the

sorority while supporting the University community’s return to the “new normal”. We have jumped into familiar territory

mentoring our Initiated/Active Member leadership throughout the summer as they adjust to their upcoming roles, plan for

in-person recruitment and rush, and prepare for a class of New Members, but the important work of ensuring women know

and embrace our history and songs lies ahead. With the New Member Process being virtual, those who joined Delta in spring

2020 have yet to meet some of their sisters (other than online) and songs especially were difficult to impart.

The Alumnae Advisor Team will meet monthly to communicate and organize our support for the Initiated/Active Members.

An area of focus will continue to be building cultural competence and opportunities to engage in conversations about

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. In addition, the Advisors will take special care when supporting our leaders by keeping in mind

the on-campus experience was missed last year and bonding and rebuilding may take time.

A few fun facts about our Alumnae Advisor Team include: Liz Hind completed her doctorate, Liz Callahan started a new job at

JPL, Cathy is traveling with Delta sisters cruising the coast of Maine in September, Janet is the board president of the Redlands

YMCA, Lori is the board president of the Family Service Association of Redlands, Meigan started a new summer tradition…a

road trip with her daughter to visit her dad who recently retired to Monterey and Claudia bought a motorhome! All of this in

2020-2021 during a pandemic!

Each Advisor will support our Initiated/Active Members in the same focus area from the 2020-2021 school year to provide

consistency as we transition back to life on campus. Special thanks to Meigan Karraker, who serves as Assistant Director,

Academic Success at the University of Redlands, and continues in her role as University Advisor for Delta. We are so fortunate

to have her as part of our team.

Alumnae Advisor responsibilities for 2021-2022 are as follows:

Δ Claudia Newton ‘84 Primary Advisor (UR), President Mentor, Risk Management Mentor, Song

Chair Mentor

Δ Elizabeth (Becky) Callihan ’94 Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Mentor

Δ Katie Gaw ’97 New Member Education Advisor (UR), New Member Educator Mentor,

VP Mentor

Δ Elizabeth (Liz) Hind ’95 New Member Survey Facilitator, Elections Facilitator

Δ Janet Grenda ’85 Recruitment and Rush Advisor (UR), Catering, Recruitment and Rush Mentor,

Special Events Coordinator

Δ Lori Hatfield ’80 Financial & Property Advisor (UR), GAAC Representative (UR), Treasurer

Mentor/Dues Support Coordinator, House Chair Mentor

Δ Cathy Schilling ’76 GAAC Representative (UR), Scholarships, Awards & Pins Coordinator

Elections Facilitator Support

Δ Meigan Karraker University Advisor

(Note: GAAC refers to the University of Redlands Greek Alumni Advisory Council.)

THE DELTA DOINGS

Delta continues to streamline communication via the Delta website and our presence on social media. You probably noticed

the 2021 Delta Doings included personal updates – most related to life during the COVID pandemic – but moving forward we

will encourage women to share information on marriages, babies, new jobs, etc. on our Facebook page (Delta Kappa Psi

Alumni) at www.facebook.com/groups/28321961856. The Delta Doings will return to focusing on news from Executive Council,

the Initiated/Active Members, our Alumnae Chapters and the University (as it pertains to Delta).

Please do share pictures of Deltas gathering together. Those will be fun to include in the 2022 Delta Doings as we anticipate

life returning to a more normal state. Photos should be submitted to [email protected] no later than January 15, 2022.

Please provide the names of those pictured (including maiden name) and their class year with each photo.

To save money on postage, we continue to transition delivery of the Delta Doings to e-mail only. Note: Our intention is to

continue to mail a hard copy of the Delta Doings to women who graduated 50+ years ago who do not have access to email.

If you use email, please be sure the University has your current address so you receive the 2022 edition which will arrive in

March and highlight 112th Birthday Luncheon details. There is no time like the present to update your contact information…go

“REDLANDS CAMPUS”…UPDATE

Hello Delta Sisters!

I have the privilege of serving as President of Delta Kappa Psi for fall 2021. I am fortunate to be able to start the semester with

34 other lovely Initiated/Active sisters and we look forward to rush and the chance to offer other women the opportunity to

join Delta.

Given this will be the first semester in almost two years that we will all be together on campus, my main focus as President will

be to unite our sisterhood. Since we were sent home shortly after initiating our spring 2020 New Member Class, many of us

have never experienced an Active semester in Delta or even met some of our sisters in person! So, I am happy to announce

the first weekend back on campus we will be hosting a “retreat” for our Actives at the Delta house. The retreat will consist of a

photoshoot in front of the house, song practice, bonding activities such as “name a sister who ____” and will conclude with a

“royal family” dinner with our brother fraternity, Pi Chi, so we can all get to know one another.

Although news about COVID-19 and the Delta variant is constantly changing, as of right now we are remaining positive we

will be able to have almost, if not all, of our normally scheduled activities and events at full capacity (with masks mandated

indoors). This includes classes, sports, rush, ASUR social events, and outdoor parties with other Greek organizations. The

University is requiring students to get the vaccine (with some exceptions) in the hope that once 80% of the Bulldog

community is vaccinated, the mask mandate can be lifted and we can have a normal school year.

Our rush theme is Mamma Mia after the hit movie starring Meryl Streep. Our events will have the ABBA soundtrack playing

and Actives will dress in their best disco flare. The Rush and Recruitment Chairs are working hard to make sure our events are

just as fun as they have been in the past, all while remaining safe.

Global pandemic aside, we are all so excited to be able to live in Redlands once again and are striving to make the most of

this upcoming semester and year. We hope that everyone is remaining happy and healthy and we look forward to seeing

you all at Homecoming! If you have questions about the Initiated/Active circle, please feel free to email me at

[email protected].

DELTA PIN GATHERING DUST?

Remember when we were able to purchase traditional Delta pins from the bookstore on campus? Well, that’s no longer

possible and even if it were, the price would probably be prohibitive for Initiated/Active members to purchase one given the

price of gold these days.

The Delta Advisors have a special traditional pin program in place and the number of pins in our possession is limited. The

program enables pins to be loaned to deserving Initiated/Active members each semester who then return them to be worn

by equally deserving Deltas the next semester. Currently, the President, Vice President, New Member Educator (Mom), and

the Deltas with the highest GPA and most community service hours the previous semester are eligible to wear these precious

pins.

We are incredibly grateful to the women who have donated their traditional pins to us in the past. If you would be interested

in donating your pin to Delta, please send it to Cathy Schilling, 703 S. Eureka St., Redlands, CA 92373.

ALUMNIFIRE DELTA ALUMNI GROUP

You’re invited! AlumniFire, a network that connects Bulldogs to other Bulldogs at various career stages, now connects Deltas

to other Deltas at various career stages too. More than 800 networks rely on AlumniFire to share jobs, advice, events, ideas,

and more. Try it – it’s a great way for Deltas to give and get value from the University of Redlands network. To access

UNIVERSITY VILLAGE

In case you missed it, the following information was sent to Greek Alumni by President, Krista Newkirk, Director of Alumni and

Community Relations, Shelli Stockton, and Donna Eddleman, Dean of Student Affairs, in early September:

As some of you may know, the University, in conjunction with its Board of Trustees, has been working for a number

of years on plans for a University Village that will utilize University-owned land south and east of Glenn Wallichs

Theatre, around the new Arrow line rail station. The “University Village” is envisioned as a sustainably developed,

transit-integrated neighborhood with green space, retail, restaurants, a boutique hotel, and a mix of housing types. In

short, it is the destination spot we have long envisioned. This development is critical to the future of the University. It

will attract prospective students, faculty, and staff; add an important revenue source; and therefore, help keep tuition

affordable.

There is much that is still uncertain about the development, but it will progress in stages and over the next 2-5 years,

we envision it extending north to Sylvan Boulevard and east to Grove Street. This will affect some University-owned

housing units currently utilized by Greek organizations, specifically Delta Kappa Psi, Beta Lambda, Alpha Sigma Pi,

and Alpha Theta Phi.

We want to assure you that the University is committed to our local Greek organizations and to dedicated spaces for

their use. With that in mind, we write to let you know that we are initiating a process in which Greek organizations

and the University will work together to envision new space that will allow our Greek organizations to continue to

thrive over the coming decades.

In March we started discussions with the Greek Alumni Advisory Committee (GAAC), a group comprised of advisors

of each of the active chapters, as well as the Alumni Board Greek Committee, regarding the type of space the

organizations would be most interested in. We will also get input from Greek student leadership when students

return in the fall.

Page 15: Delta kappa psi - redlands.edu

No decisions have been made regarding types of facilities or locations, and we look forward to collaborating with

Greek alumni and student leadership over the coming months. Given the timing of the development, we have time to

work on this together. We will keep you informed as the process progresses and if you have specific suggestions,

please email them to [email protected].

Thank you for your continued interest in and support of the Greek community at the University of Redlands.

This important topic remains on the minds of those serving on GAAC and discussion regarding possible options for the

organizations displaced by the University Village project continue to flow. Please know Lori Hatfield and Cathy Schilling, as

Delta’s representatives on GAAC, as well as members of your Alumnae Executive Council, are committed to working to ensure

Delta is relocated to a space that meets or exceeds what we currently enjoy. Delta has put a lot of time and money into the

house we currently call home and expect no less given our history of leadership on the Board of Trustees, Alumni Board and

Town & Gown Board of Directors as well as the millions of dollars our Alumnae have blessed the University with over our 112

years of existence.

As a sidenote, the building of anything over three stories remains a highly controversial political issue in Redlands currently

with a second initiative to appear on the general election ballot on November 8, 2022. Measure G, which would have

amended the city charter to exempt new development within the Redlands Transit Villages Planning Area from certain

development constraints was defeated on March 3, 2020 with 64.88% of participants voting no.

“Sometimes good things fall apart

so better things can fall together.”
