It’s been exciting for me the last six months, since the

GCC in Clearwater, serving as your Grand Regent. I was fortu-

nate to have attended three Province assemblies, where I met

many great brothers whom I know will do our Fraternity

proud.

Those of you who have not subscribed to our Google

Group (http://groups.google.com/group/kappapsifraternity/), I ask

that you do so. This is a wonderful avenue for us to keep in

touch with our brothers and learn what is happening across

the country.

Kappa Psi also has a Twitter (http://twitter.com/kpsi) and

Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/kappapsi). If you

would also like to join these, please do.

The Fraternity has partnered with two corporations that

benefit us financially with no cost to the Fraternity. One is

Geico, which can be accessed on the front page of the Kappa Psi website. According to our con-

tract, we receive revenue every time someone clicks on that link, plus an additional amount at

year’s end. The second company is Bank of America—the Kappa Psi Credit Card (http://www.kap-

papsi.org/national/eby/forms/f208.pdf). We receive a small fee when the brothers use their card.

As I mentioned in the last issue of THE MASK, we are conducting a Capitol Campaign to raise

money for the Fraternity to improve efficiency in The Central Office. The monies will help to

expand our database, speed-up “M” card processing, and streamline clerical activities.

Dr. Eugene V. White, a Theta initiate, is our 2010 recipient of the A. Richard Bliss Award—our

highest honor, recognizing outstanding achievements in pharmacy. Dr. White was solely responsi-

ble for pharmacy’s shift from a product-oriented profession to a patient-oriented one through the

introduction of his medication profile record system. Congratulations, Dr. White!

Also, I congratulate and welcome into the brotherhood Epsilon Kappa Chapter (Belmont

University, Nashville), the Houston Graduate chapter, and the re-activation of Gamma Delta (Ohio

Northern University, Ada, Ohio). Kappa Psi is growing and will continue to grow, with

several more chapters on the horizon to be chartered.

Proud and humble to be your Grand Regent.

The First Word

A New Look for the New DecadeOver my first year as your editor, I have been exploring ways to give THE MASK a fresh

new look. In this issue, we bring it to you. Some of the changes you will see may be obvious, while others are more subtle. I’ve also taken to renaming some of the sections of THE MASK.Chapter News will now become 99 Hands, as a reminder that strong Kappa Psi hands arealways there to support us. If your chapter is looking for new ideas for fundraising or profes-sional activities to get involved with, what better way to search for ideas than from your broth-ers from other chapters, not just within your Province, but also across Kappa Psi as a whole. Iencourage all brothers to read all the chapter reports in 99 Hands.

I am also starting a new feature section that will run from time to time called BrothersUnmasked. This section will spotlight individual brothers or chapters that are doing greatthings in their communities, are an inspiration to others, or that make personal sacrifices forthe good of others and how they have come about doing it. For this section to be successful, Iask for your support. If you know of any brothers (collegiate or alumni) whom you wouldlike to see spotlighted here, please let me know so that we can share their story with thebrotherhood.

I look forward to hearing what you think of the new look, both positive and negative. Please don’t hesitate to share your opinions with me, as this will help to make THE MASK thebest publication possible.

Fraternally,

Cameron Van DykeEditor of THE MASK

he demands of ceaseless, selflesswork caught up with Scott Miglinon Sunday afternoon as he wasexhibiting slides of his recent res-

cue work in Haiti. When he described wit-nessing how a disaster relief team physicianhad to refuse treating a terminally ill tuber-culosis patient because of the shortage ofcare for other patients who at least had achance to survive, Miglin’s voice grew thickwith emotion.

“I didn’t think I’d get this emotional,”Miglin said, “because I haven’t been.”

The Mount Vernon pharmacist spent twoweeks in the Caribbean island nation as oneof the National Disaster Medical System’sDisaster Medical Assistance Teams offeringhumanitarian aid. On Jan. 12, the poor, densely populated country was struck by amassive 7.0 earthquake, which took an esti-mated 230,000 lives. International relief haspoured in since then, although Miglin dis-covered firsthand what a hurdle practicallogistics can be.

Miglin has been involved in disasterresponse teams since 2002, including theaftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, butthe Haiti expedition marks the first time U.S.national disaster teams have been deployedoutside the country. Normally part of DMATPA-1, based in Pittsburgh, Miglin was tem-porarily reassigned to the NJ-1 group, basedin New Jersey, which was short a pharmacist.

As the seriousness of the earthquakebecame apparent, disaster workers were

alerted. Miglin received notification, packedand flew to Atlanta within 48 hours of theearthquake, and was deployed to Haiti thefollowing day. A steady stream of relief work-ers was pouring into Haiti’s ToussaintL’Ouverture International Airport, but fromthere, transportation logistics broke down,Miglin said, as his group arrived at 2 p.m. butwas unable to leave until 8 p.m. When vehi-cles were finally found, they turned out to bedump trucks. The teams had to load whatgear they had—most of it got misrouted andtrailed them by a day or two — through thetruck’s dump hatch, then climb in them-selves.

Having nowhere else to go, the teamswere housed at the U.S. embassy, a facilityMiglin said was completely unprepared for asudden influx of aid workers. Miglin said

they ended up camping all over the grounds, trying to fend off mosquitos, millipedes, fist-sized tarantulas and the drench of tropicalmorning dew. Even worse was the lack ofequipment and security, which left the teamsstranded, idle, at the embassy. Miglin said heeven heard a rumor that one aid team whichventured forth without adequate securityhad its vehicle stolen. After a day or two ofindecision, embassy officials relentedenough to let the teams start caring forHaitian/American earthquake victimsmassed outside the gates of the embassy.

When the logistics finally fell into place,Miglin said, his team needed an hour and ahalf to make the three-mile trip back to theairport to prepare its mission. After working18 1/2 hours, the teams slept for only threehours before returning to work to gather the

Scott Miglin shown in the pharmacy “set up in anot very sanitary bar and grill next to the pool atthe Petionville Country Club.” The pharmacy areawas also used to secure our food and water so weactually did become ‘bartenders.” We were dubbedthe “Phar and Grille.” The non-controlled drugswere left unsecured at night without incident. Thecontrolled drugs (which were few) were kept underlock and key.

The dumptrucks were initially the only mode oftransportation. They were provided by a companycontracted with the US embassy, but not withoutdifficulty. Volunteers had to either prop open theswinging back door or lift the equipment over thetop…not the most efficient means of loading, not tomention hazardous for the four guys propping thedoors open.

Brother Scott Miglin is a 1990 initiate ofGamma Delta chapter. He graduated fromOhio Northern University in 1994 with hisBachelor of Science in Pharmacy. Miglin currently resides in Mount Vernon, Ohio, where he is a pharmacist for Foster’sPharmacy. rest of their equipment, which had finallycaught up with them.

Finally, Miglin said, with security andtransportation from the 82nd AirborneDivision, the team set up a triage unit at arefugee camp in Pétion-Ville, just outside ofthe nation’s capital, Port-au-Prince. Thecamp held about 50,000 people needingtriage, where those who would recover with-out treatment and those who would notrecover were bypassed in hopes of treating

those who might survive if given treatment. While the army distributed bags of humani-tarian MRE rations, strike teams went toassist at local hospitals and in the streetswherever wounded people clustered.

Miglin and two other pharmacists set uptheir temporary pharmacy in an old bar sec-tion of a country club. Food and drugs werestored there for security, as some desperateHaitians found ways to bypass security.Miglin found himself having to deny drugs

MIDDLE: The line outside the embassy is primarily Haitian-Americans awaiting processing for repatriation to the United States. The embassy also provided some food and drinking water to the people. DMAT teams were not allowed to help becauseof security issues. RIGHT: Volunteers slept under the stars most of the nights and usually without a cot. The dew in the morning was awful!

L-–R: Netting kept out the mosquitos, but the millipedes still found there way into sleeping bag. An improvised sharps disposal. The Coast Guard, working in an areathat did not allow for helicopter landing, loads Medivac patients on a litter onto a dinghy to boat to transport to a Coast Guard Cutter that had a helicopter.Due to lack of formula, wet nurses were hired to help feed the youngest orphans.

The ER at University Hospital in Port Au Prince. At night, there was only one functioning light bulb. A “bathroom” set up at PaP airport. The airport’s terminal building was structurally unsound and there was no place else to go. Slightly better bathroomaccommodations were provided by the 82nd Airborne when we got to the Petionville Country Club.

A Special FriendshipErik Lambrechts, Gamma Kappa ViceRegent

Since the early ’60s, the Gamma Kappachapter of Kappa Psi and the South DakotaTheta chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon havehad a unique relationship. Many of the char-ter members of the SAE chapter were KappaPsi brothers and, since the early ’70s, the twochapter houses have been located across thestreet from each other.

On February 15, the South Dakota Thetachapter house of SAE caught fire. Everyonewas able to get out of the house safely, butthe fire resulted in an almost total loss of thehouse, leaving 10 men without a home andpersonal possessions.

In an effort to help, the Kappa Psi mem-bers living at the chapter house played hostto three of the SAE members for severalnights, while they worked to get back ontheir feet. Many of the Kappa Psi brothersalso offered clothes, food, school supplies, and places to stay. Because of the close prox-imity, the Kappa Psi house also made anideal home base for the SAE members asthey sorted through the debris, worked withfire officials, and held meetings.

Throughout the years of both chapters, there have been many brothers who havebeen members of both Fraternities, and theGamma Kappa chapter was happy to helpout in SAE’s time of need. SAE plans onrebuilding their chapter house on the samesite, which will allow both Fraternities theopportunity to continue to support eachother and build friendships that will last alifetime.

to people trying to get treatment withoutwaiting to see a physician. Miglin said he hadto lie about having certain drugs just to getthose people to leave.

“It was hard, but it was necessary,” Miglinsaid.

But although some tried to get aroundthe system, Miglin said most Haitians wereoverjoyed help was being offered.

“The resilience of the people was tremen-dous,” he said. “They were so appreciative ofwhat we were trying to do.”

What they were trying to do includedimprovisation, he said. When one patienthad a baby, team members rigged a plasticsyringe with a latex glove stretched over theend to serve as a baby bottle. Plastic totesand a litter were sufficient to serve as a hospi-tal bed.

After all of that intensive work, Miglinreturned to the United States to resume hisusual life, although not for long. By coinci-dence, Miglin had long ago volunteered toparticipate in a private organization’s aid tripto the Dominican Republic, the country nextdoor to Haiti. The province Miglin will beworking in on this trip borders Haiti, andmay well have suffered damage in the earth-quake, too.

Miglin said he would not be able to dosuch work helping others without his wife,Susan.

“I could not do this without her love, sup-port and taking care of things at home dur-ing my deployments,” he said, adding that,in turn, Susan is supported by their family

and friends who lend helping hands andwords of encouragement.

Miglin specifically saluted Foster’sPharmacy for going to the trouble of cover-ing his absence when he has to leave on amoment’s notice. He contrasted that kind ofcommitment to a corporate pharmacy he hadheard about, which contributed only a singlebottle of ibuprofen to the relief effort.

Miglin showed slides from his missionSunday afternoon to a crowd of friends at hishouse. One friend said his daughter’s schoolhad taken up a collection to help theHaitians, and he wondered where an aidworker like Miglin would recommend it to besent. Miglin said he would recommend dona-tions be sent to World Water Relief orPartners in Health, two organizations he hasworked with and for which he can personallyvouch.

Iota continues to encourage itshigh level of leadership excellence.Nine new Brothers: Brandon Barrett,Matt Broome, Andy Curtis, JustinDavis, Tom Dipiro, Drew Finley, BillyGrooms, Beau Kessler, and DanMcGraw were initiated into the chap-

ter in December and have becomeexcellent additions to the Fraternity. It was our extreme pleasure to hostthe Province III spring conclave inCharleston, South Carolina, at theend of January. The weekend includ-ed the low-country favorite Shrimp ’nGrits for breakfast, SouthernBarbecue at the banquet, and anafter-party at Mad River, an establish-ment that was previously a stonechurch. During the planning process,Iota decided to revive an old ProvinceIII tradition of providing a serviceproject in conjunction with the con-clave. The brothers designedValentine’s Day cards and treat bagsfor the children at the Carolina YouthDevelopment Center. Also, our chap-ter would like to congratulateBrothers Will Shealy and TravisCombs for being elected as satrapand chaplain, respectively. We lookforward to their help in the contin-ued success of Province III. Iotawould also like to congratulate all ofthe new officers elected to leadProvince III over the next year.

Iota also had Brothers RomeoAbangan, Justin Bennett, TravisCombs, Robert Declue, Thomas Diaz,Mackie King, Trey Reeves, and PaulStrange attend the Province IV winterconclave hosted by Gamma Zeta, inBirmingham, Alabama. The brothershad a great time visiting Province IVand celebrating Gamma Zeta’s 75thAnniversary Banquet and would loveto thank everyone for their hospitali-ty. Additionally, Brother TravisCombs will be attending the ProvinceII spring assembly in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania, hosted by Beta Kappa.

We have continued our philan-thropy in a number of areas, startingwith the delivery of 822 lbs. of cannedgoods to the low-country Food Bank. The brothers also provided a boothfor GERD education and participatedin the MUSC-sponsored MLK Bridgeto Health and Kids Fair at a local ele-mentary/middle school. Health infor-mation was provided for the childrenand families of the community atSanders-Clyde Elementary/MiddleSchool. Iota provided two booths,

one for men’s health and another formedication safety, as well as assistedattendees with filling out PMRs. It wasan excellent way to establish a positiveinfluence on the communities we willserve in the future. Some brothersalso provided education with otherorganizations, which includedTylenol safety and fever informationfor children, Sickle Cell Disease, bonemarrow transplants, substance abuse, and immunizations. It was truly agreat showing of Iota’s leadershipabilities and commitment to the pro-gression of pharmacy.

If you came toLexington, Kentucky, to see us, youwould find us in our “New KentuckyHome,” a brand new college of phar-macy that our entire university isbuzzing about. Our new state-of-the-art building is 286,000 square feet. That’s over a football field long andsix stories high. As you can imagine,we are going through some extremelyexciting changes. As for events, our

most enjoyable philanthropic affairthat we have participated in since thebeginning of the new-year is the TheSweetheart Soirée. It was a black tieevent that conducted a live auction, asilent auction, and a sit down dinner. The purpose was to raise money forthe non-profit organization Surgeryon Sunday Inc. This non-profit orga-nization provides outpatient surgicalservices for those who cannot affordinsurance and are not eligible for fed-eral or state programs. The live auc-tion even had a pair of boxing gloves,in mint condition, signed by the oneand only Muhammad Ali. Ourupcoming events for the semesterinclude joining up with our localLambda Kappa Sigma chapter at aLexington Legends game, a pizzaparty with laser tag (a fantastic combi-nation), and a scavenger hunt.

It has been a busy quarter forKappa Psi, full of fun events for ourpledges and brothers. We began thequarter with our Speed-Dating eventfor brothers to get to know thepledges in less than three minuteseach. The very next week, we held ascavenger hunt for the pledges, where they had to find secret placeson campus, seek out brothers hidingat restaurants in the area, participatein truth-or-dares, and provide photoevidence of their fun. This is alwaysan exciting event, and a great way forpledges to meet P4 brothers whoalways make an appearance, evenafter a day full of rotations!

The devastation that plagued Haitiearlier this quarter initiated a unityacross the College of Pharmacy andHealth Sciences at Texas SouthernUniversity. The Delta Theta chapterjoined forces with Project CURE,along with other local organizations, such as APhA-ASP, SSHP, andSNPhA, to collect supplies for sur-vivors of the horrendous earthquake.Brown boxes were set up throughoutthe college, where analgesics, antibi-otic ointment, hand sanitizer, and toi-letries were collected and sent to theravaged nation of Haiti.

The quarter rounded out when theDelta Theta chapter of Kappa Psi split

and went in two totally differentdirections… literally. Many of thechapter members took the six-hourtrek to New Orleans and joined thou-sands of other brothers at the KappaPsi Province VII meeting. The otherhalf of the chapter checked glucose, urine, and blood pressure at the FifthWard Dialysis Clinic Health Fair.Regardless of the destination, funand purpose was enjoyed by all.

The Delta Iota chapter of KappaPsi is still keeping that fire burningthroughout the campus of FloridaA&M University. Spring semester, webegan with a running start. We start-ed off with several community serviceevents, which include volunteering atBig Bend Homeless Shelter andspending time at Miracle Hill NursingHome. We continued with severalfundraisers, including carwashes andt-shirt sales. The dynamic brothersalso partook in the College ofPharmacy and PharmaceuticalSciences Haiti Relief Effort.

The chapter got involved with com-munity service in the Tallahasseearea. We assisted at the Big BendHomeless Shelter, passing out food tothe less fortunate throughout theneighborhood of Frenchtown andwithin the shelter. We also spent time

at the Miracle Hill Nursing Home atan event called “My ValentineMiracle,” where we created littlegame booklets that allowed us tospend quality time with the elderlyand had a blessed experience learn-ing about the life they lived. Wehanded out Valentine cards andteddy bears to each resident there.

The chapter also held three car-washes, which were very profitable. Itwas a great bonding experience, where we were able to learn moreabout each other, the plans we havefor the chapter, and have fun whilemaking money. It certainly doesn’tget any better than that. We also hada t-shirt sale that was very profitable. The shirts were our H.P.I.C. (HeadPharmacist In Charge) t-shirts. This

idea was inspired from an alumni andit was definitely a good idea.

The chapter was quick to respondto the call for help due to the tragicearthquake event in Haiti. We collab-orated with the College of Pharmacyin a donation drive where we, as a col-lege, raised over 200 cases of waterand over 50 boxes of food and sup-plies. This was a great event that tooka lot of planning and it was absolutelyworth it. We were able to accomplishthis within two weeks of the misfor-tune in Haiti, and the College wasproud of the initiative that the stu-dents took to have such a successfuldonation drive.

The brothers were not only aboutbusiness, we also had time to have funcelebrating a memorable time in thelife of one of our faculty brothers, Dr.Otis Kirksey, in reaching the histori-cal landmark of turning 50. Now,even though we partied, it was notwithout a cause. The proceeds of thisevent went to providing assistance tothose who can’t afford diabetic med-ical supplies. This was another eventwhere we not only had fun but wewere still able to do a great deed. Theproceeds of this event were approxi-mately $1,200.

Not only is the chapter effective inperson, we are also turning towardsbeing effective via the World WideWeb. We developed a FacebookWeekend Health Announcement, where every brother will quickly postas a status for an entire weekend adisease state that we should be awareof, the symptoms that are generallyseen with this disease state, ways of

prevention, and/or encouragementto check their health status. The firstone that we started with wasHIV/AIDS, which encouraged every-one on Facebook to get tested andeducate people in knowing the waysthat this virus is transmitted. Wereceived very positive feedback fromthis, which led to discussions frompeople in the Facebook communitysharing more knowledge on such ahorrible virus. We continued the fol-lowing weekend with obesity, statingthe complications that obesity canlead to and educating people on BMIranges that are healthy. We alsoreceived positive feedback from thisstatus.

The brothers are only able to dothe previously stated activities bymaking ourselves strong as a chapter, and we had several events thatimproved the presentation skills ofeach brother by having a brother pre-sent on a disease with constructivecriticism from the brothers and alsoprofessional advice tips that allowbrothers who are strong in certainareas to teach other brothers withinthe chapter how to be strong in theseareas also. We had two disease statepresentations so far, one coveringCardiac Heart Failure, which was pre-sented by Brother Marshall, St. Louis, and Cardiac Arrhythmias, presentedby Brother Ibukun Adetula. One ofour professional tips was by done byBrother Ishmael Qawiy, who coveredarriving to class on time, healthy eat-ing habits, and effective time man-agement.

We also look forward to seeing youthis summer, as we host the ProvinceIV summer conclave, which promisesto be a memorable experience.

So, as you can see, we have beenvery busy and plan to continue the

legacy and carry “the fire” in ourhearts, as many Delta Iota brothershave done before us. Until next time,“one for all and all for one.”

The spring semester is not evenhalfway through, but the brothers ofDelta Rho have already engaged inmany exciting events and have shared

some great experiences together.January proved to be a busy month, beginning with the groundbreakingand construction of our ReflexologyPathway and Medicinal Garden, onlythe second reflexology pathway onthe East Coast! We were honored towelcome Dr. Elizabeth Marazita, aworld-renowned expert in traditionalChinese Medicine and Reflexology toeducate and train us on the use of ournewly built reflexology path. Havingthis pathway on our campus and read-ily available to the public will tremen-dously benefit our community, espe-cially those looking for natural, holis-tic ways to alleviate their ailments. Now that the reflexology pathway hasbeen laid, the final step is to researchthe types of medicinal herbs andplants that will flourish in the subtrop-ical Florida weather and populate ourmedicinal garden. As reward for theirassistance in the construction of thereflexology pathway, brothers werehonored with an invitation to see HisHoliness, the 14th Dalai Lama, speakduring His visit to our campus inFebruary. It was a truly inspirationaland incredible experience, one thatwill never be forgotten!

After taking part in the ground-breaking of the reflexology pathway, brothers and pledges embarked on ajourney to Birmingham, Alabama, forthe 2010 winter conclave, hosted byGamma Zeta. Piling into four vans,we made the 800-mile trip to SamfordUniversity, where we got to catch up,network, and have fun with all thechapters in our Province. It was anexciting experience for both brothersand pledges, as we were able to meetand mingle with brothers from dis-

tant chapters whom we don’t seeoften. For the first time in ProvinceIV history, pledges were allowed toattend the conclave meetings, givingthem a glimpse into Kappa Psi’s leg-islative process, as well as makingthem feel more involved in theFraternity.

Soon after returning from con-clave, Delta Rho took part in NSU’s2nd Annual College of PharmacyField Day. First-, second-, and third-year pharmacy students battled forthe winning trophy in games of flagfootball, kickball, water balloon toss, and tug-of-war. It was a fun-filled dayof barbecue and friendly competi-tion. Our chapter concluded themonth of January with the initiationof 25 brothers—the largest pledgeclass to be initiated in Delta Rho’s his-tory! It was an event that had beenanticipated by brothers and pledgesalike for quite some time, and we arevery excited and proud to share thebond of Kappa Psi with our newbrothers! Since initiation, the broth-ers have been actively working togeth-er to improve our chapter.

Months of hard work and strugglefinally culminated in an incredibleturnout as Delta Rho hosted the 2ndAnnual Dance Marathon to benefitthe Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDSFoundation. The 12-hour eventincluded hip-hop, country line, salsa, and Bollywood dance lessons, games, prizes, raffles, and more food thanyou could imagine. Several studentorganizations came out to supportand participate in the dancing extrav-aganza, which ultimately allowed usto raise $7,000 for Pediatric AIDS. Wewere also happy to welcome severalbrothers from the Delta Upsilonchapter. This event would have beenimpossible without the continuoushard work, support, and dedicationof the brothers of Delta Rho.

As the semester approaches themidpoint, we are all looking forwardto spring break. Delta Tau has been incredibly busythis semester. We have incorporatedour talents and passion with manyorganizations in the Las Vegas area.We have dedicated our time andenergy each month to ensure thatour community is being served by ourKappa Psi brothers.

In early December, we were able togive our time to Caring 4 Kids, anorganization that makes sure childrenliving below the poverty level havefood to eat on the weekends. InJanuary, Delta Tau partnered withHabitat for Humanity and collectedmoney to help the Haiti Relief Fund.We were able to collect $180 in a 30-minute period from our fellow class-mates. Delta Tau also donated time tothe Ronald McDonald House inFebruary, where we cooked andserved food to 11 families with chil-dren in the hospital. We are proud to

announce that we collaborated withthe Be the Match registry in Februaryand helped to register over 300 peo-ple at the Galleria Mall inHenderson, Nevada. We were able torepresent a local young man in hopesthat we could be one step closer tofinding him a bone marrow match.

Delta Tau also found time to social-ize with our brothers by enjoying afun bowling night, Wranglers hockeygame, and ice skating. We also had achance to set up a night to relax withour Province IX brothers during theASHP Midyear meeting. We have hada fulfilling year so far, and we expectmuch more exciting events to come!

Competition organized by Delta Phi’ssocial chair, Traci Bricker. This year, the secret ingredient was apple! Thethree teams were each given 12 applesand one-and-a-half hours to completetheir culinary creations. The winningteam, “Team P4,” conquered the com-petition with unconventional tastesand creativity to boot. They won with atwo-course meal of boiled apple sushiand apple-jack fruit sticky rice. That isnot to say their competition wasn’tstiff, as the other teams put forth tastycreations like pan-seared chicken withapple walnut chutney and apple-infused mashed potatoes with apple-onion braised chicken.

In appreciation for all that DeltaPhi had done for them, the Thetapledge class organized a Fiesta Partyespecially for the brothers. The partyboasted delicious Mexican food, livemusic courtesy of pledge PatrickRecinto, and a piñata that was ulti-mately destroyed by regent KayvanMoussavi (he can sure swing a stick).

As the pledge process came to aclose, Final Exam day had come. The

between various stations manned bybrothers. Each station has a uniquechallenge, including a Coke-Pepsichallenge, a Connect-Four challengeand charades with human mannequins(you get the idea: ridiculous amountsof fun). The event proved a great wayfor pledges to meet all the brothersand have a good time doing it.

Not so much as a week had passedwhen it was time for the third pledgeevent: the Interview Party. Pledges andbrothers formed teams and were giventasks that tested their ingenuity, cre-ativity, and, of course, their pharmacyknowledge. Among the challenges wasa test of engineering ability anddesign sense to build the tallest free-standing tower out of straws, newspa-pers, and manila folders. Some towersstood true, others sadly succumbed togravity. Another more academic chal-lenge was to decipher the brand andgeneric names of the top drugs andorganize them in order of sales.

In late January, the brothers took adetour from pledge activities, as it wastime for Delta Phi’s Annual Iron Chef

see how much money they can raisefor this great cause. Our chapter isalso participating in a Crohn’s andColitis Walk in Fort Lauderdale. Thenewly initiated brothers did a greatjob fundraising for the walk andbrought in over $500 for the event.

Looking ahead, we will be planningour annual golf tournament to beheld on April 24, and the graduatedinner to follow on April 25. The golftournament is our biggest fundraiser,so we are hoping to have an even bet-ter turnout than previous years. If anyof you brothers feel like escaping toWest Palm Beach, Florida, for an awe-some round of golf, contact DeltaUpsilon. The event is annual.

Pledges went home full ofsweets and sporting milk moustaches.

Soon after, it was time for manybrothers’ favorite pledge event: SpeedPledging! Delta Phi’s little twist onspeed dating demands that pledgesrotate every couple of minutes

To start off the semester, we got abig group together to participate inthe Susan G. Komen 5K Race for theCure, which benefits breast cancerawareness and research. On MLK Day,most students plan to head to thebeach or spend the day relaxing, but agroup of our brothers decided tospend the day hanging out with someawesome residents at the Lourdes-Noreen McKeen Skilled Nursing/Assisted Living Facility, where weworked with Sister Eulalie George. Weplanned fun activities for the resi-dents. Bingo was the biggest hit of theday. After the games, we spent a fewhours with the residents and got toknow about them and their lives.

The first weekend in February, ourchapter joined Delta Rho and partici-pated in their Dance Marathon downin Fort Lauderdale, Florida. DeltaUpsilon’s team raised over $600 forthe event, and the proceeds went tothe Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDSFoundation. This was the first-placeteam for fundraising overall! Thebrothers who participated learned sev-eral interesting dances, which, ofcourse, they passed along to all of theother brothers who weren’t able tomake the trip down south. I am surethat these brothers will tear up thedance floor with their new moves atthe next conclave.

Although the Minnesota Vikingsdidn’t get to have a Super Bowl debut, yet again, that hasn’t stopped us fromhaving any fun here in Duluth. Weheld a Super Bowl party anyway formembers and their significant othersto enjoy good company, food, andcommercials. It turned out to be a lotof fun, despite the fact that our teamwasn’t playing.

Our plans to volunteer with theasthma camp “We No Wheeze” havebeen put on hold, as the camp hasbeen cancelled for this summer. Wewill be putting efforts elsewhere untilthe camp starts up again.

The Multi-cultural PharmacyStudent Organization (MPSO) is

holding a bone marrow registrationdrive in which a number of our mem-bers will be volunteering. The drive’sgoal is to get 1,000 people to be onthe HLA-registry, so about 100 volun-teers are needed for the day of thedrive. Our brothers were more thanhappy to donate their time to helpincrease Leukemia patients’ chancesfor finding a bone marrow donor. Wedid a caramel roll fundraiser in whichthe proceeds were donated to MPSOto help pay for materials needed forthe drive.

At the moment, we are alsofundraising throughout the collegewith clothing and butter braids toraise money to buy our chapterinsignia. We are well on our way andhope to have it by the end of thesemester. Additionally, we are sellingcoffee mugs, aluminum water bottles, and lanyards, and the proceeds will bedonated to the local HOPE clinic, which provides physician and pharma-cy services to the underprivileged anduninsured.

In tune with the Winter Olympics, one of our brothers, Sarah Marshall, isengaged to John Shuster of the USACurling Team. Prior to her departureto Vancouver to support him and therest of the USA team, she held a curl-ing how-to session at the DuluthCurling Club for our brothers.Curling in Duluth is like the beach isto Florida. Needless to say, manyattended, and it even inspired us tostart an intramural curling team ofour own brothers, called the Sliders. Since our intramural basket-ball season didn’t end as we hoped,we will try our luck with curling.

Our social committee has beenhard at work planning events for ourbrothers to build closer relationships. On February 20, a group of 10 broth-ers attended a night out in downtownDuluth at the Dubhlinn’s ComedyClub. The University providedcoupons for the tickets, so our admis-sion was free, and it was a blast. Whenthe weather gets warmer, we plan tohave a barbecue to close out thesemester.

On April 9–10, the Province Vmeeting will be held in Chicago,Illinois. Our regent, StephanieKroseman, will be attending, as well assome brothers from Drake. Also, onApril 23–24, the Province VIII con-clave will be held in Omaha,Nebraska. Our chapter is working withthe Twin Cities Epsilon chapter to geta coach bus so we can all travel togeth-er. On February 9, KappaPsi sponsored An Event at Food Cityin Vansant, Virginia, for cardiacawareness. This is an important eventthat we hold each year, and it helps tosupport the mission of our school tohelp educate rural and underservedpopulations about healthcare. Alongwith informing members of the com-munity about heart health, brothersalso checked patients’ body massindex and blood sugar. This allowed us to makebetter decisions regarding whom toextend a bid. Very soon thereafter, pledging began! We have 28 pledgesand they are doing great. We decidedto wait longer to make Big/Littleselections, so that we could get toknow each other, and so we had sever-al very interactive events. With a strong foundation of 31brothers, the current Beta Class iswelcoming its first group of pledges.Interviews were held in January forroughly 25 interested members, withcurrently 17 active pledges. With twoweeks left until initiation, the antici-pation and excitement has seemed tolinger around Northstate’s hallways.Adding more brothers to the family is definitely encouraging, butsharing the history and passing theKappa Psi legacy is something wehold near and dear to our hearts inEpsilon Iota. This pledging processhas brought our Beta class much clos-er together, as we learn to perfect ourbrother building skills tremendously. We look forward to the new brotherswho will join us shortly.

This spring semester will hold sev-eral opportunities for Epsilon Iota toreach out to our Sacramento commu-nity. In March, we will be having aPoison Control educational event forthird graders and a health fair for theAsian Community Center. Anotherhealth fair will be provided in April atthe Rancho Cordova Senior Center.Throughout the semester, brotherswill also be volunteering in the soupkitchen at the women and children’scenter.

As elections approach for new offi-cers as well, the possibilities forEpsilon Iota to expand its Fraternityawareness and pharmacy knowledgeare endless. Good luck to all the newpledges and thank you to all currentofficers for your hard work!

Over Valentine’s weekend, thebrothers of Province X met inMissoula, Montana, celebrating theKappa Psi brotherhood. The hostchapter, Gamma Eta from theUniversity of Montana, enthusiastical-ly welcomed brothers from BetaOmicron (University of Washington),Beta Pi (Washington StateUniversity), and Delta Mu (BritishColumbia University from Vancouver,Canada).

Province X brothers were honoredto meet some of Kappa Psi’s nationalofficers, including Grand Regent E.Ben Welch, Grand Vice Regent KaliWeaver, Grand Councelor EricGupta, and Graduate Member-at-Large Latha Radhakrishnan. Theirpresence inspired our brothers overthe weekend, and it really helped toconvey a strong message about theidea of “Kappa Psi is for life.”

Province X supervisors, Dr. SmithMarvin and Derrick Egi, were alsopresent. Their expertise and KappaPsi experiences helped our brothersduring our business meetings overthe weekend to improve their knowl-edge about how to build a strongerchapter and how to maintain lifelongbrotherhood.

The air hockey tournament, wonby Brother Skyler York, bowlingevent, and official dinner held afterelections were some of the keymoments of the weekend, but moreimportantly, bonding between broth-ers was the cornerstone of thisProvince meeting. As usual, accord-ing to an old custom of Province X,the newly installed Province officershave started their offices by plunginginto the cold waters of the MissoulaRiver when the outdoor temperaturewas 30 degrees Fahrenheit.

As I continue my Kappa Psi experience 15 years post-pledging, Icontinue to ask myself, “What does the expression ‘Kappa Psi is forLife’ truly imply?” We are taught this statement during pledging and itis reinforced in our collegiate experience. Why continue the KappaPsi experience post-graduation? What can Kappa Psi offer you? Moreimportantly, how can each Graduate brother give back to Kappa Psi?

These should be the questions that go through your mind whenyou decide to move on with your life after putting your heart and soulinto the Fraternity for three-to-four years. It is truly amazing to see theenergy, enthusiasm, passion, and love for our beloved Fraternity dur-ing these collegiate years. How is it that these qualities are often diffi-cult to recognize after graduation?

So, let’s go back to what Kappa Psi can offer you after graduation. I ask these questions: Whatwas so appealing about the brotherhood that made you pledge some umpteen years ago? Was itthe fellowship or industry or sobriety or the high ideals? Did you get what you were looking for?If so, are you not able to get the same reciprocation now as a graduate?

Surprisingly, the Graduate pride and dedication to our great Fraternity starts with pledging. One objective of the Fraternity comes to mind when I consider the above. It is “to inspire in itsmembers a deep and lasting pride in their Fraternity and in the profession of pharmacy.”During the pledging experience, I challenge each collegiate chapter to place this very impor-tant objective at the top of the education list. Respect your chapter and the Fraternity as awhole. If we don’t, then how can we expect our pledges to value this sentiment?

How do you encourage brothers to join Graduate chapters? Don’t let them leave! Transitionyour last year clerkship students over to the local Graduate chapter. Encourage them to join byoffering them a free membership for that first transitional year. Appoint a collegiate to sit onthe Graduate chapter executive board as a liaison. This not only promotes collegiate participa-tion, but also encourages their graduating class to transition over to the Graduate experience.Again, don’t lose these brothers during their clerkship education. It happens each year.Remember, it is harder to “come back” to Kappa Psi after being inactive for numerous years.

So what about the brothers who have been inactive for years? Do we give up on them? Writethem off completely? Absolutely not! Then you ask, how do we bring them back? From myexperience, providing mentorship opportunities is the most effective way. Ask a Graduatebrother to speak on his or her area of expertise at the next chapter meeting. More often thannot, they are more than willing to give back to the brotherhood in this professional manner. Also, work with your Provinces and alumni associations to create new Graduate chapters inareas where none exist.

The general thought that brothers must put 100% of their efforts into Kappa Psi asGraduates is not feasible. Graduates have careers, families, and other responsibilities. Here ishow Graduates can be of service: Continue to be active within the brotherhood in a professionalmanner, such as participating in roundtable events, creating shadow opportunities, and pre-senting career topics at chapter meetings. When possible, social activities may present them-selves as another aspect of Graduate involvement.

It is clear that we cannot grow as a Fraternity if we do not improve our Graduate brotherretention rate. While we have not experienced optimal success in this area in the past, I amworking hard for each of you and with each of you to ensure that we improve in this area. Inclosing, I challenge each graduating brother to continue the traditions and legacy of Kappa Psiafter they move on with their professional careers and life endeavors. We must preserve thelove, respect, and dedication not only for the Fraternity but also for the profession of pharmacy.
