Sister Silhouettes:

Welcome to the spring issue of the National Silhouettes Newsletter.

On behalf of the National Silhouettes Officers and Members of the Executive Board

and Province Coordinators, it is a pleasure to extend greetings to our members. We are

also pleased to congratulate the incoming administration of Grand Polemarch of Kappa

Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Thomas L. Battles, Jr. and Senior Grand Vice Polemarch,

Reuben A. Shelton, III, ESQ. Best Wishes to the First Lady of Kappa, Silhouette

Geraldine Wood Battles, and to Silhouette D’Anne Shelton.

To Silhouette Andria Daniels, Newsletter Editor and Assistant Technology

Coordinator, “Thank You” for the time and effort dedicated to sharing "news around

the Provinces". Also, thank you to all contributors in this publication.

With each new Silhouettes year, our vision for excellence as an Auxiliary to Kappa

Alpha Psi Fraternity is grounded in the mission of the National Silhouettes to connect, engage and raise the bar of

support to Kappa Alpha Psi. Together we can make a difference. Silhouettes across the country are engaged in

the Kappa-Silhouettes SafeSleep Partnership initiative to promote and spread the word throughout our

communities about healthy infant development and resource awareness. Province Coordinators, thank you for the

designation of Health and Wellness Coordinators in the 12 Provincial areas. This initiative is a "first" for the

National Silhouettes. The project completion date is June 30, 2016.

The "call to Action” request by Grand Polemarch Thomas L. Battles, Jr. at the 2015 National Silhouettes

Conference in New Orleans is our invitation to encourage support from Chapters of Kappa Silhouettes.

“Reach 50” is the goal for each Chapter. Let us do our part to advance the success of the Kappa healthy initiative.

In 1947, Kappa Alpha Psi made the first public recognition of Silhouettes at their Grand Chapter meeting in Los

Angeles, CA. In 2017, the National Silhouettes will celebrate 70 years of recognition as "SILHOUETTES” at the

National Silhouettes Conference in Orlando, FL. For your information, our goal to make a significant contribution

to the National Kappa Foundation will need the support of Silhouettes. Please support this effort with your

contribution of $70 to the National Silhouettes of Kappa Alpha Psi by October 31, 2016.

In addition, stay tuned for news from the National Silhouettes Ways and Means Committee on their development

of an upcoming National Silhouettes Survey. Your participation will help to guide strategic plans for the future.

Silhouettes, we applaud your active membership. Continue to reclaim Silhouettes, and re-engage our widows. I

encourage each Chapter and Members-at-Large, to go above, and beyond to connect, engage and raise the bar of

support to the men of Kappa.

Peace and Blessings,

Jacquelene “Jacquie” Sharp Massey

NATIONAL SILHOUETTES INITIATIVES

Silhouettes, we’re bursting at the seams with pride for the tremendous support that we received from the Province Coordinators in support of the National Flags Project that was initiated by Silhouette President Jacquelene Sharp Massey. The Project received full support from the Silhouettes through their respective Province Coordinators and the Flags provided a continued spirit of Unity and grandeur throughout the 2015 National Silhouettes Meetings and for future meetings of the National Silhouettes Organization. The Flags were purchased by the Provinces, and therefore the Province Coordinators now have a Province Flag and Tablecloth to use and display as desired at their respective Province Meetings. The Coordinator will insure that the Flags are available for display/processional at all future National Silhouettes Conferences.

A special Thank You to Silhouette Katina Gamble, Middle Eastern Province Coordinator for her invaluable support

and commitment to this Project. Silhouette Gamble spent many hours on the telephone with Dunn Manufacturing

(NC) and traveled many miles to the Company to iron out the wrinkles in order to facilitate and insure that a quality

and appropriate product would be delivered to the Silhouettes of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Silhouette Coordinators, on behalf of President Massey, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH for your cooperation and

continued support of the National Silhouettes Organization.

GREETINGS

From

THE EASTERN PROVINCE SILHOUETTES

Silhouette Joan Petite Crutchfield, Coordinator

Kappa Silhouettes, I am so excited today! I hosted my 1st Eastern Province Silhouettes (EPS) Officers and Executive Board Teleconference on yesterday, November 22, 2015 and I proudly proclaim that it was a successful conference. I received accolades immediately after the call ended and again this morning from several Chapter Presidents who were on the call.

I am the newly elected Silhouettes Coordinator for THE Eastern Prov-

ince; however, I am not new to the hard working Silhouettes of this

region. I joined the Province in 1996 and have since served as Chapter

President, and organized (Chartered) my current Chapter where I

served as President for four years. I also served as Historian, Reporter,

Community Services Projects Chair, Bylaws Committee Chair and

Nominations and Elections Chair for my Chapter –THE

Bowie/Mitchellville (MD) Silhouettes. At the Province level, I served

as the Assistant EPS Coordinator, EPS Historian, EPS Journalist, and EPS

Nominations and Elections Chair. Additionally today, I proudly serve

(since 2013) as the Executive Assistant to the National President,

Silhouette Jacquelene Sharp Massey. I am truly humbled to serve as

the Eastern Province Silhouettes Coordinator!

I am delighted to report that we have 12 active Silhouettes Chapters in the Eastern Province and in September 2016, we will celebrate 50 years of service, commitment and support to Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., the National Silhouettes Auxiliary and the Communities in the East:

Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia and Bermuda. We will begin our celebration with a Day of Service where each EPS Chapter will select a community project and render a day of service to that Project on the same day. Look for Eastern Province Silhouettes Semi-Centennial Celebration in the SILHOUETTE, 2017 Edition! The goal of the Eastern Province Silhouettes is achievement in every endeavor. We will accomplish our goal working together with commitment, dedication and support for and of each other. Don’t believe me? –Just Watch!

MESSAGE FOR THE PRESIDENT Greetings Silhouettes,

Your Silhouette sisters of the Baltimore Chapter thank the Southwestern Province and the New Orleans Chapter of Silhouettes for hosting a productive and memorable 46th National Silhouette Meeting. Under the leadership of our National Silhouette President – Jacquelene Sharp Massey, we are well on our way to advancing the National Silhouette vision, “Together We Connect, Engage, and Raise the Bar for Service and Support”. The Baltimore Silhouettes are continuing the momentum set in New Orleans. We have

established a chapter liaison, Silhouette Micki Smith, for the Kappa-Silhouettes Safe Sleep Partnership Project. We have identified several activities to educate parents and caregivers, as well as to engage our community partners to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). We are also excited about celebrating our 70th Anniversary as a National Silhouette Auxiliary. We have started our campaign to encourage all Silhouettes to contribute $70 towards our national goal to present the Kappa Foundation with a check for $70,000.00! So in addition to working on our local initiatives as summarized in the article below, we are making progress in helping us to “raise the bar”!

I appreciate your serving hearts and hands,

Audrey Bennett, President Baltimore Silhouettes

Keeping Community in Service Before the first official call to order, the Baltimore Silhouettes were planning their signature Scholarship Brunch and Silent Auction. To engage a broader community demographic the event was held at Morgan State University and the “day party “ phenomenon was incorporated. In addition to great food and jamming music, guests were able to get their seasonal shopping done at the Silent Auction and “vendor alley”. For the avid sports fans, there were multiple big screen TVs going so the guests could view the football games. The scholarship fund raising goal was met while appealing to a broader audience.

Additionally, the Silhouettes supported the Kappa Guide Right Program. This year in addition to providing over 125 Baltimore City community guests a table served Thanksgiving dinner, community partners shared educational and resource materials with the dinner guests. This was truly a community event where community means a place where people come together and are accepted as a gift. Throughout the dinner it was easy to see that the benefit of the service was mutual; from guests to partners, Kappas and Silhouettes, and to the Guide Right youth all left feeling “full”!

started the 2015-2016 year in September with a “Back to School” fundraiser collecting school supplies for

the Benjamin Syms Middle School. A big thank you to all of the Silhouettes who took the time to pick up

supplies or donate funds. Principal Blount sent us a letter of appreciation thanking us for our heartfelt and

thoughtful donation.

Walking is low-risk and easy to start. It can

help keep you fit and reduce your risk of serious diseases, like heart disease, stroke, diabetes and more.

A regular walking program can also:

Improve your cholesterol profile

Lower blood pressure

Increase your energy and stamina

Boost “couch potato” bone strength

Prevent weight gain

American Heart Association recommends that adults get 150 minutes or more of moderate-intensity physical

activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week. Even short 10 minute activity sessions can be added

up over the week to reach this goal. If you would benefit from lowering your blood pressure or cholesterol,

aim for 40 minute sessions of moderate to vigorous activity 3 to 4 times a week. You could do this by

walking 2 miles briskly (about 4 miles/hr.). If that’s too fast, choose a more comfortable pace.

Get ready

All you need to get started are comfortable clothes and supportive shoes. Layer loose clothing, keeping in

mind that brisk exercise elevates the body’s temperature. Shoes designed for walking or running are best.

Make sure you have a little wiggle room between your longest toe (1/2") and the end of the shoe. Avoid cot-

ton socks since they retain moisture and can promote blisters.

Work on your technique

Begin with short distances. Start with a stroll that feels comfortable (perhaps 5-10 minutes) and

gradually increase your time or distance each week by 10-20 percent by adding a few minutes or

blocks. If it’s easier on your joints and your schedule to take a couple of 10- to 20-minute walks

instead of one long walk, do it!

Focus on posture. Keep your head lifted, tummy pulled in and shoulders relaxed. Swing your arms

naturally. Avoid carrying hand weights since they put extra stress on your elbows and shoulders.

Don’t over stride. Select a comfortable, natural step length. If you want to move faster, pull your back

leg through more quickly.

Breathe deeply. If you can’t talk or catch your breath while walking, slow down. At first, forget

about walking speed. Just get out there and walk!

Walking 101

Connect, Engage, and Raise the Bar on Service and Support!

Pick up the pace

To warm up, walk at an easy tempo for the first several minutes. Then gradually adopt a more purposeful

pace. A good way to add variety is to incorporate some brisk intervals. For example, walk one block fast, two

blocks slow and repeat several times. Gradually add more fast intervals with shorter recovery periods.

Concentrate on increasing your speed while maintaining good posture.

Walking hills is a great way to tone your legs. Using Nordic walking poles can help your burn more calories

and give you better posture and overall muscle endurance. Treadmill walking, while not as scenic, can be

convenient during bad weather.

The end of your walk is an ideal time to stretch since your

body is warmed up. Stretch your hamstrings and calves as well

as your chest, shoulders and back. Hold each stretch for 15 to

30 seconds.

Track your progress. Although experts recommend walking at

least 30 minutes a day, there are no hard and fast rules. Walking 60 minutes/day and brisk intervals will help

you burn more calories. Fit walking into your schedule whenever you can. That may mean three 10-minute

walks over the course of a day. The best schedule is one that keeps you walking and keeps you fit!

Be safe

Avoid traffic accidents. Listening to lively music while you walk is a great way to energize your

workout. But if you wear headphones, keep the volume down and watch out for traffic that you may

not hear. Wear light colors or reflective clothing and carry a flashlight or glow stick if you walk when

visibility is low.

Walking on sidewalks is best, but if you have to walk on the street, stick to streets with lower speed

limits. Faster streets are riskier because motorists are less likely to see pedestrians and cannot stop as

quickly. Accidents involving pedestrians have an 85 percent chance of becoming fatal if the car is

moving at 40 mph as compared to only 5 percent if the speed is 20 mph.

Know your area. Pay attention to what businesses are open in the area you’ll be walking and know

the location of emergency telephones. Walk on well-traveled streets rather than taking shortcuts in

less crowded areas such as alleys or parking lots. If you give the message that you are calm, self-

assured and have a purposeful gait, you’ll lower your chances of becoming a victim.

Two heads are better than one. Walking with a partner or in groups discourages crime and may

help alert you to dangers such as speeding motorists or unleashed dogs.

If you experience foot, knee, hip or back pain when walking, STOP and check with your doctor to find out

the cause. You may need special exercises or better shoes. If you have osteoarthritis and experience increased

joint pain lasting an hour or two after walking, consider an alternate activity like stationery cycling or water

exercise. But don’t stop exercising!

Protecting your personal information can help reduce your risk of identity theft. There are four main ways to do it: know who you share information with; store and dispose of your personal information securely, especially your Social Security number; ask questions before deciding to share your personal information; and maintain appropriate security on your computers and other electronic devices.

Keeping Your Personal Information Secure Offline Keeping Your Personal Information Secure Online Securing Your Social Security Number Keeping Your Devices Secure

Keeping Your Personal Information Secure Offline Lock your financial documents and records in a safe place at home, and lock your wallet or purse in a safe place at work. Limit what you carry. When you go out, take only the identification, credit, and debit cards you need. Leave your Social Security card at home. Before you share information at your workplace, a business, your child's school, or a doctor's office, ask why they need it, how they will safeguard it, and the consequences of not sharing. Shred receipts, credit offers, credit applications, insurance forms, physician statements, checks, bank statements, expired charge cards, and similar documents when you don’t need them any longer. Destroy the labels on prescription bottles before you throw them out. Take outgoing mail to post office collection boxes or the post office. Promptly remove mail that arrives in your mailbox. If you won’t be home for several days, request a vacation hold on your mail. Consider opting out of prescreened offers of credit and insurance by mail. You can opt out for 5 years or permanently. To opt out, call 1-888-567-8688 or go to optoutprescreen.com. The 3 nationwide credit reporting companies operate the phone number and website. Keeping Your Personal Information Secure Online Know who you share your information with. Store and dispose of your personal information securely. Be Alert to Impersonators. Make sure you know who is getting your personal or financial information. Don’t give out personal information on the phone, through the mail or over the Internet unless you’ve initiated the contact or know who you’re dealing with. If a company that claims to have an account with you sends email asking for personal information, don’t click on links in the email. Instead, type the company name into your web browser, go to their site, and contact them through customer service. Or, call the customer service number listed on your account statement. Before you dispose of a computer, get rid of all the personal information it stores. Use a wipe utility

program to overwrite the entire hard drive. Before you dispose of a mobile device, check your owner’s manual, the service provider’s website, or the device manufacturer’s website for infor-mation on how to delete information permanently, and how to save or transfer information to a new device. Remove the memory or subscriber identity module (SIM) card from a mobile device. Remove the phone book, lists of calls made and received, voicemails, messages sent and received, organizer folders, web search history, and photos. Use strong passwords with your laptop, credit, bank, and other accounts. Be creative: think of a special phrase and use the first letter of each word as your password. Substitute numbers for some words or letters. For example, “I want to see the Pacific Ocean” could become 1W2CtPo. Securing Your Social Security Number Keep a close hold on your Social Security number and ask questions before deciding to share it. Ask if you can use a different kind of identification. If someone asks you to share your SSN or your child’s, ask:

why they need it how it will be used how they will protect it what happens if you don’t share the number

Keeping Your Devices Secure Install anti-virus software, anti-spyware software, and a firewall. Set your preference to update these protections often. Protect against intrusions and infections that can compromise your computer files or passwords by installing security patches for your operating system and other software pro-grams. Don’t open files, click on links, or download programs sent by strangers. Opening a file from some-one you don’t know could expose your system to a computer virus or spyware that captures your passwords or other information you type. Before you send personal information over your laptop or smartphone on a public wireless network in a coffee shop, library, airport, hotel, or other public place, see if your information will be protected. Keep financial information on your laptop only when necessary. Don’t use an automatic login feature that saves your user name and password, and always log off when you’re finished. That way, if your laptop is stolen, it will be harder for a thief to get at your personal information.

PHILADELPHIA KAPPA SILHOUETTES SPARKLE IN NEW ORLEANS After an exciting and productive year, the Philadelphia Silhouettes journeyed to New Orleans, Louisiana where they reaped the benefits of their hard work at the 46th National Silhouette Conference held during the 82nd Grand Chapter Meeting of the members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. This chapter brought home several prestigious awards including the President’s Award in recognition of their community service. Another award was given for the highest percentage of participants by a large chapter. They also received the award for the largest number of attendees at the Conference. Kudos to Silhouette Laura Walker and Silhouette Erma Ward-Walker. They each received the Above and Beyond Award for their hard work and dedication. March winds will blow in hundreds of women at their Annual Fashion Show and Luncheon held at the famous Presidential Caterers in Norristown, Pennsylvania. In April 2016, Silhouettes will sail away on a cruise to the Caribbean Islands again raising awareness and funds towards their outreach efforts. Last, but not least, this Silhouette Chapter will host its June Social at the Philadelphia Kappa Achievement Center where they will announce the names of 2016 Scholarship winners. Silhouette Sisters, The Norristown, PA Silhouettes have been blessed with another prosperous year. First our membership has increased by 12 new members, making us the second largest Northeastern chapter. With continues commitment to the community we serve, the Norristown Kappa Silhouettes Scholarship Fund was established to provide financial assistance to female high school students who plan to attend an accredited two or four year college or university as a full-time student. We provide a total of $500.00 for each successful year completed to two recipients. Currently one recipient has graduated in June 2015. We have followed her academic endeavors for the complete four years. We are continuing to support one student who is schedule to graduate in June 2017. This year our scholarship committee will pick up another student, Kudos to this hard working committee.

We were able to donated monies to the Lupus Foundation as well as, “Praise for the Cure” through our on-going fundraising events. This would make our tenth year of support. We will continue to donate winter supplies to Cole Manor Elementary School. The children, teachers and administrators were appreciative of our gifts to the Kindergarten and first grade children in the past. As an ancillary group of the Kappa Alpha Psi Inc. Norristown Chapter, we will support our men with their

annual spring fashion show. During their fall Harvest cabaret, November 21, we donated a basket of cheer that brought in over three hundred dollars in extra funds. Our future continues to shine as the Nor-ristown Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc. host the 2017 Northeastern Province. We hope to see you there. Respectfully Submitted by President Rosalyn A. Kilson, Norristown Silhouettes

MURFREEBORO ALUMNI SILHOUETTES On November 21, 2015, the ladies of the Murfreesboro Chapter of Silhouettes sponsored a canned food drive for our local Salvation Army. The Salvation Army located at 1137 W Main Street prepares and serves nutritious meals for the community-at-large, residents of their Center of Hope Shelter, which houses 75 people, including children 365 days a year in their Sally Café. Also, the meals are provided to those people struggling with homelessness, the working poor, and families that need to take advantage of a free meal. The Murfreesboro’s Salvation Army takes feeding the hungry seriously. Since a storm completely

destroyed The Salvation Army’s Family Thrift Store in downtown Murfreesboro, which provided the revenue to purchase vegetables for these meals, canned vegetables were needed. We collectively as a group saw a need in the community and decided to do what we could do to help. The Murfreesboro Alumni Chapter of Silhouettes consists of the following Silhouettes: Clydell Clark, Kenya Day-Edwards, Euleda Faye, Vicki Hancock, Anne Smith, and Veda White.

The South Central Province hosts a CHAPTERS’ CLUSTER! Saturday, September 12

th, marked the first Province’s Cluster event. The day began early with the officers and immediate past

officers of the West Tennessee Silhouette Chapters engaged in a pre-luncheon, “Coffee and Conversations,” meeting in the Holiday Inn University’s Wine Cellar.

Afterwards, the officers of the Germantown, Jackson and Memphis, Tennessee chapters joined their members in the restaurant for lunch as they co-hosted the, now 4

th annual, “Kickoff before the Kickoff”, a

pre-cursor to the Southern Heritage Football Classic Game. It was a lively and enjoyable

event which is, hopefully, only the first of plans for several future cluster events throughout the South Central Province with plans to host similar events in Middle Tennessee, Kentucky and East Tennessee also! Members of the West Tennessee Cluster of the sensational South Central Province!

Several members of the Birmingham Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Silhouettes participated in a community service project involving a local food bank, Magic City Harvest, a non-profit organization. Magic City Harvest collects surplus food from grocery stores and restaurants and distributes it to those in need of a nourishing meal. The Silhouettes donated their personal funds, time, and talent to enhance the feeding efforts of Magic City Harvest. Each year raw food safe ceramic bowls are purchased and decorated by social, religious, corporate, and educational organizations to provide the backdrop for an event hosted by Magic City Harvest called Empty Bowls. The bowls are painted with food safe ceramic paints, glazed, and fired in a kiln. At the Magic City Harvest's Empty Bowls event patrons pay $20 to enjoy a delicious lunch of assorted soups, artisan bread, assorted cheeses, and water; those things that one might dine on in a homeless shelter. The attending patrons also select one of the bowls painted by the various organizations to take home. The bowls serve as an everyday reminder that at anytime any of us can become homeless.

Heart attack and stroke are life-and-death emergencies — every second counts. If you see or have any of the listed symptoms, immediately call 9-1-1 or your emergency response number. Not all these signs occur in every heart attack or stroke. Sometimes they go away and return. If some occur, get help fast! Today heart attack and stroke victims can benefit from new medications and treatments unavailable to patients in years past. For example, clot-busting drugs can stop some heart attacks and strokes in progress, reducing disability and saving lives. But to be effective, these drugs must be given relatively quickly after heart attack or stroke symptoms first appear. So again, don't delay — get help right away! More about heart attack Some heart attacks are sudden and intense — the "movie heart attack," where no one doubts what's happening. But most heart attacks start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Often people affected aren't sure what's wrong and wait too long before getting help. Immediately call 9-1-1 or your emergency response number so an ambulance (ideally with advanced life support) can be sent for you. As with men, women's most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw pain. Learn more about heart attack symptoms in women. Learn the signs, but remember this: Even if you're not sure it's a heart attack, have it checked out (tell a doctor about your symptoms). Minutes matter! Fast action can save lives — maybe your own. Call 9-1-1 or your emergency response number. Calling 9-1-1 is almost always the fastest way to get lifesaving treatment. Emergency medical services (EMS) staff can begin treatment when they arrive — up to an hour sooner than if someone gets to the hospital by car. EMS staff are also trained to revive someone whose heart has stopped. Patients with chest pain who arrive by ambulance usually receive faster treatment at the hospital, too. It is best to call EMS for rapid transport to the emergency room.

Learn more about heart attack. Immediately call 9-1-1 or the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) number so an ambulance can be sent. Also, check the time so you'll know when the first symptoms appeared. A clot-busting drug called tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) may improve the chances of getting better but only if you get them help right away.

WARNING SIGNS OF HEART ATTACK,

STROKE & CARDIAC ARREST

Connect, Engage, and Raise the Bar on Service and Support!

A TIA or transient ischemic attack is a "warning stroke" or "mini-stroke" that produces stroke-like symptoms. TIA symptoms usually only last a few minutes but, if left untreated, people who have TIAs have a high risk of stroke. Recognizing and treating TIAs can reduce the risk of a major stroke. Beyond F.A.S.T. – Other Symptoms You Should Know Sudden numbness or weakness of the leg Sudden confusion or trouble understanding Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination Sudden severe headache with no known cause Learn more about stroke warning signs. More about cardiac arrest If these signs of cardiac arrest are present, tell someone to call 9-1-1 or your emergency response number and get an AED (if one is available) and you begin CPR immediately. If you are alone with an adult who has these signs of cardiac arrest, call 9-1-1 and get an AED (if one is available) before you begin CPR. Use an AED as soon as it arrives.
