Thank you! After two years, this is my final Bottom Linearticle as chairperson of theDutchess County RegionalChamber of Commerce. Ithas truly been an honor and aprivilege to serve you with myfellow Board of Directors. After two years there are

several things that never ceaseto impress me:My employer, Adams Fairacre

Farms, for its outstandingcontributions to the communityand this Chamber. I especiallywant to thank Pat Adamsfor nominating me way backwhen to the Chamber board. His favorite thing to say with achuckle is, “Geez Gaye, I didn’tthink they were going to makeyou chair.”The Chamber staff is by

far, the hardest working, most dedicated and well-organized team I have everseen. The executive staff ledby Charlie North, Audra Gertyand Gloria Cukar, are alwaysseeking to provide new and/or improved services to theChambers members. They

are tireless in their passion forthe Chamber, and they havecreated an organization thatoffers something to every sizeemployer and non-profit. Inaddition to that, Charlie is thegreatest promoter of people andorganizations I have ever met.He is a walking advocate foryour business, your concernsand you. You, the members, are so

generous with your time andresources to our Chamber, community and each other. Veryimpressive! Each month as I saton the dais, I had the privilegeof chatting with the breakfastspeaker before he or she wouldmake their presentation. Ihave to admit I would swell withpride in our Chamber when thespeaker would be awed by theattendance and positive energythey felt in the room. On morethan one occasion, the speakerwould say they didn’t evenexpect close to 100 people asthey looked out at all of you, usually 200 or more strong. For me, the highlight of these

past two years is the joining

of the two chambers and theirfoundations. Thank you to allthe members who worked tosee this consolidation becomereality. It is with pride and joy that

I pass the baton onto FrankCastella, Jr., who will be your2012 Chairman of the Board. Heis an accomplished, innovativeand energetic leader. You are infor a treat.Thank you again for this

wonderful opportunity to serveyou. To you and your family, Iwish you a very happy holidayseason.

In today’s businessworld, it is becoming more andmore common to switch fromhard-copy, paper documentsto electronic versions. To dothis most of us employ somesort of scanner to transformour documents for emailingor electronic filing. However, which option for scanning isbest for you and your business?Below are some items toconsider when choosing yourscanning option. If you or your staff are

scanning documents dailyfor routine processes whendealing with your clients, desktop scanners may be theright choice for you. Desktopscanners can be inexpensive, and the set-up is usually prettyminimal so you can be up and

running in a very short period oftime. These smaller, dedicateddesktop scanners also seemto have high image-qualitycapabilities and a variety of fileformats available to the user.A multi-function printer can

serve businesses that do areasonable volume of scanningdocuments. They can also takeadvantage of the other featuresthis type of machine has tooffer, and give up some of thebells and whistles that comealong with a dedicated desktopscanner if multiple employeesneed to access the scanner. Some multi-function machinesalso give you some basicindexing function to sort andstore documents.Network scanning is great

for larger organizations that

need to scan informationacross multiple departmentsby multiple users. Networkscanning can increase workflowand save time as it allowsfor the sharing of documentsacross departments. Networkscanners also have securityfeatures that allow for sensitivedocuments to be locked andonly accessible to authorizedusers or departments.Once you find the right

scanning system for youor your business, you’ll beamazed at how much easieryou can manage the transfer ofinformation between you, yourclients and even your own staffin some cases. For more information, contact

By now you’ve certainly heardthe slogan “When you shop, when you dine, and even whenyou shop online…Think LocalFirst.” It’s catchy, it rhymes, and it’s fun to say, but mostimportantly, now more thanever, it’s necessary. When you’re out doing your

holiday shopping in the comingweeks, remember that mantra.I know it’s tempting to head tothe nearest superstore and pickup whatever’s on sale, but weas a community can do betterthan that. Here are some ideasto keep in mind:One of my favorite things

about living in the HudsonValley is that we have someof the finest restaurants in theworld right in our backyard.Does someone on your listonly eat take-out or fast food?Consider treating them to a giftcertificate to one of our finelocally owned and operatedeateries. If they’re not thefancy “wine and dine” type, why not pick them up a couplebreakfasts at one of our diners– even they have Culinary-trained chefs!Don’t know what to get

for Mom? I bet she’d love abottle of one of our fine localwines. Or if she’s not that type, perhaps she’d like the servicesof a local housekeeper. Andwe all know Dad doesn’t need

another factory-made tie.Another thought is to give himsome coupons for an oil changeor car wash at one of the manyauto repair shops owned by ourfriends and neighbors. If you want to get something

more personal, contact a localartisan. They make jewelry, scarves, wooden crafts anda whole host of other uniqueitems that the chain stores don’tcarry – and buying from themsupports our community andhelps keep people employed.By keeping the money of

Hudson Valley residents inthe Hudson Valley, everyonewins. The consumer gets a fineproduct or service to give as agift, the business-owner getsthe support he or she needsto stay in business, and theemployees of that businesscontinue to get a paycheck thatthey can use to start the cycleall over again. With no more effort than

usual, you too can helpcontinue to make our home oneof the best and most vibrantplaces to live this holidayseason. Please remember toThink Local First!

Sincerely,

Charles S. NorthPresident & CEO

A Look Back at an Amazing Chamber Year in 2011

The Chamber’s Annual Gala

Each March, the Chamber honors the future leaders of the Hudson Valley at the annual Forty Under 40Shaker Awards. This year’s group of young professionals were some of the most impressive to date.

The Celebrity Waiters Dinner, held at Cosimo’sTrattoria and Bar in Poughkeepsie in April, putlocal celebrities tableside to serve the community

while raising money for the Cosimo DiBrizziScholarship Fund.

When the calendar turns to July, turn your gazeskyward for the Chamber’s annual BalloonFestival. This year, 15 sites throughout theHudson Valley hosted a spectacular launch.

The Chamber was pleased to welcome DanFrench (left) and Marc Molinaro, candidates

for the office of Dutchess County Executive, toparticipate in an open forum and meet the businesscommunity at the September Contact Breakfast.

Market Place 2011 connected the local communityto the best products and services in the HudsonValley in October. Featuring over 75 vendors,a showcase of top chefs, informative businessseminars, and more, Market Place 2011 was the

The array ofbusiness and service providerson display was exceptional.Even the “flow” of the floor planpromoted an exhilarating mixof opportunities for mutuallybeneficial conversations and a

sharing of ideas. I have attendednumerous “showcase” eventsof this nature over the yearsand none has come close tomatching the “buzz” present at thisexperience. In contrast to the aggressive,

almost unnerving, feel of similarconferences or trade shows, participants at Marketplace 2011possessed an uplifting exuberanceas folks were obviously enjoyingthe down-to-earth camaraderieamong inquisitive, contagiouslyenthusiastic attendees. Tougheconomic times? You’d neverknow it from this crowd!I feel as if this one event was

worth many more times theChamber’s modest membershipfee. Please pass along myappreciation to all the folks behindthe scenes. I look forward tothis and many other Chamberactivities in the future.

As the 2011 calendar yearrapidly comes to a close, smallbusinesses should now befocused on planning for both thisyear’s end and the new year tofollow. As a first step, determine

what your profit or loss is as ofnow, then estimate what thatnumber will be at year-end. Fora business that uses accountingsoftware, getting these numbersis as simple as clicking a fewbuttons. Make sure all bank andcredit card accounts have beenreconciled.Next, consider what additional

expenses you can take by theend of the year. Most smallbusinesses are cash basis, thatis, cash in (income) cash out(cash or credit card payment),so you will need some cash toreduce a profitable business orat least a credit card.Take time to consider the

following expenses:1. Purchase new equipment

or vehicles. Go over whetherpurchase with/without a loan orlease is better for your business.2. Maximize your pension

contributions.3. If your busy season

occurs January through March,

purchase product and officesupplies now. You will have adeduction in 2011 as long asthey are delivered and paid forby December 31.4. Consider paying all bills, as

long as cash is available and itis prudent to do so.5. If you are a home-based

business, you may be entitledto allocate some of yourhome expenses like utilitycosts, property taxes, homemaintenance, mortgage interest, and homeowners insurance toname a few.Planning for the end of 2011

would not be complete withoutplanning for 2012. Why?Because if you are planningon purchasing product in2011 that you normally wouldneed or purchase in 2012,what happens to your 2012expenses? They will be lowerthan normal. Planning with yourtax professional will help you torun different financial scenariosthat best suits your business. You can reach Cindy Smith,

Today’s high performanceleaders need more thancognitive and technical skills toinspire their teams and guidetheir organizations. Skillssuch as coping with distress, avoiding burnout and developingpersonal resiliency are crucial toensuing effective organizationalleadership.Last month, the Leadership

Dutchess class focused onsubjects such as definingstress and stressors, differentpersonality types (A and B) andthe various behavior patternsassociated with type A and typeB traits. They also identifiedburnout factors and exhaustion,as well as how to develop the

best communication (withinthemselves) and their peers. And yes, it is true that men andwomen do not think alike andtheir approach to communicationis entirely different. Thisunderstanding is not onlyvaluable to managing stress, butvital.Different tactics for coping

effectively with stress werediscussed. The class learnedthat if not properly dealt with, stress may negatively affectallergies, disease and long-termhealth. Back pain, headache, hypertension, insomnia andstomach ulcers are just a fewmedical conditions that canbe influenced by stress. Using

optimism, believing in yourselfand learning how to tolerateambiguity can make a differencein coping with stress. Exercise, nutrition and allowing time forrelaxation and recovery so youcan “re-create” yourself will helpone effectively get back on theright track.• Rule 1: Don’t sweat the small

stuff!• Rule 2: It’s all small stuff!!• Rule 3: If you can fight, and

you can’t flee...learn how to flow!Special thanks to session

presenter Dr. Richard Ovensfrom REO Associates and UlsterSavings Bank for their generoussponsorship.

“Although we have only been a Dutchess Chamber Member for a short period

of time, we are very pleased with the results we are already seeing. (Director

of Membership) Christine Desmoni has guided and encouraged us from the

start to participate in the Chamber events, which have proven to be a great

networking tool for our business. She has also been an integral part in making

the other members aware of our business by creating valuable introductions

and public awareness. Everyone at the Chamber has been more than helpful

and truly genuine in their concern for our business’ growth.”
