The commendable leadershipof past chairperson GayeMallet and the Chamber’sExecutive Team; Charlie North,Audra Gerty and Gloria Cukar, have directed our Chamber ofCommerce to exist as a strongeconomic driving force for ourcommunity. The programsoffered by the Dutchess CountyRegional Chamber of Commerceare vast, and they providegreat opportunities for ourmembership. Gaye’s resoluteleadership and foresight, as aboard member and chair, werevital to this during the criticalperiod of growth the Chamberendured over the last decade.I am personally thankfuland grateful to have had theopportunity to learn from Gayeand the professional team atthe Chamber, and I look forwardto an exciting 2012 as yourchairman.Member or non-member,

our Chamber of Commercehas a different meaning andimpact to each individual inthe community, but ultimately ithas one commonality we canall share – opportunity. Eventhe most active members don’talways realize the depth of ourChamber’s services, what it

does to benefit and improvethe life of all who live, work orvisit our region. Of course, the largest part of what theChamber offers is opportunity forbusinesses and their employees, but the impact goes far beyondits members. There are many reasons an

organization or individual mightjoin a Chamber; advocacy, health insurance premiumdiscounts, networking, continuing education andguidance, or simply as anavenue to give back to thecommunity. Some think theChamber’s sole function isto give referrals and offernetworking forums to membersso they can grow their bottomline, but I tend to disagree. While our Chamber certainly hassuch opportunities, the programsgo far deeper than a typicalnetworking mixer or roundtablebusiness card exchange. If youaspire to grow your businessthrough referrals, learn whatthe Chamber offers and getinvolved by attending eventsregularly. Engage with all thebenefits of your membershipand never be afraid to askhow. Another approach is tovolunteer or sponsor one of

our 20 committees, over 100staple events or 25 ChamberFoundation events heldthroughout the year. There is no better way to

promote you or your businessthan choosing your targetaudience and providing themwith the right tools to learn aboutyou and your business. Interactface-to-face with others thatappreciate and understand whatit is to be involved. The Chamber provides the

opportunities for you -- you haveto take the opportunities andturn them into further success.

Making Dutchess County Your Partner For ProgressBy: Marcus Molinaro, Dutchess County Executive

If you are interestedin getting a tablet PC to makeyour work or home life easierto manage and have access tothe Internet, media and otherapplications while on the go,you may want to weigh thevariety of options out therebefore making a purchase.First consider the screen

size. Tablets come with screensas small as 8.9” and can getas large as 13.3”, but biggerisn’t necessarily better in thiscase. Keep in mind that unlikedesktops, tablet PC screens arereally meant to be small. You also need to determine

what kind of performance youare looking for and weigh youroptions for speed and memory.

Unless you have money to burn, the most expensive tabletscan probably be avoided andyou’ll probably be looking atsomething mid-level. Set abudget for yourself and readcustomer reviews carefully soyou know what you’ll be gettingfrom a user perspective. You’llalso want to review how manyadditional ports the unit has, ifthat’s on your priority list. It’s also important to consider

the style you want, because ifyou’re like most users, you’llend up living with this tabletfor a while. Hard drives areanother item to consider beforemaking your purchase. Solid-state disk (SSD) hard drives arequieter, faster and produce less

heat. However, mechanicalhard drives are typically biggerand less expensiveDoing your homework on this

purchase can only end up ingood results that will keep youhappier with your tablet for alonger period of time, and that’sno small thing when we are asociety that is “plugged in” somuch of our time.

One of my favorite things todo at New Years’ is reflect. I’verecently been thinking a lotabout what we accomplishedat the Chamber in 2011, andthere’s no way around it -- itwas one crazy year. From theconsolidation in January all theway through to our amazingHoliday Contact Breakfast, I’mthankful that the year was filledwith more ups than down, moresmiles than frowns, and a lotof progress for Hudson Valleysmall businesses. We hosted another 12

successful breakfasts andBusiness After Hours events,an amazing Gala, a successfulballoon festival, perhapsthe best Market Place tradeshow in history, and countlessother meetings and seminarsand networking initiatives alldesigned to help local businessgrow. I’m really proud of whatwe accomplished, and I hopeyou are too.As great as 2011 was, we at

the Chamber are not knownto rest on our laurels. In fact, for the past two months, we’vebeen hard at work planningways to be even better in the

future, and I think you’re goingto love what we’ve come upwith. Make sure you attend theupcoming Contact Breakfaston January 18 for our annualmeeting where I’ll be deliveringwhat we’re calling our State ofthe Chamber address. We’llreflect on the past, but reallywe’ll be talking about thefuture, and that future is bright.I don’t want to give away

too much too soon, but justknow that the Chamberplans to continue to positionourselves on the cutting edgeof technology, we’ll be evenmore proactive when it comesto advocacy on behalf of ourmembers, and we’ll continueto strive every day to comeup with new and innovativeways to encourage everyone toThink Local First.Happy New Year, friends.

This one’s going to be good.

“I am amazed at the opportunities the Chamber has provided me both

personally and professionally. One of the most beneficial opportunities I had

was participating as a Table Host at a Chamber event. Not only did I meet ten

new friends, but gained four new clients as a result of this chance meeting.

Taking advantage of the many events sponsored by the Chamber, I have

quickly acclimated to being a new business owner in the community.”
