State of the Dutchess County Re-gional Chamber of Commerce dur-ing the January Contact Breakfaston Wednesday, January 16 from7:30-9 a.m. at the PoughkeepsieGrand Hotel and Conference Cen-ter. North’s speech will lay out theChamber’s areas of focus for theupcoming year as well as outlinenew features and benefits of mem-bership. Highlighting the presenta-tion will be the first public unveil-ing of the Chamber’s new websiteand a brief walkthrough of its newfeatures, many of which memberswill be able to immediately take ad-vantage of following the event. Themorning gathering also serves asthe Chamber’s annual meeting.

Atthis timeof year, I alwayslike to look back and takestock of our Chamber,

and look ahead to the plans wehave for the next 12months.

It’s satisfying forme to recall allour successes in 2012, including:

• A full slate of high-profileevents, such as one of the bestBalloon Festivals of recentmemory and our very popularBusiness Expo in Fishkill

• All the ribbon cuttings weperformed to celebrate new busi-nesses and significant milestones

• The accomplishments ofour Chamber Foundation, whichawarded more than $48,000 inscholarships this past year

• Innovations such as onlineribbon cuttings, where we pro-duced multimedia presentationsfor those members who mightnot necessarily have places ofbusinesses to visit

• Strong advocacy and theaccess we gave our members toyour elected officials

•The fine contributions of ourWorkforce Development Center

But while it’s rewarding tolook back on 2012, it’s time tolook ahead to 2013. We’ll dojust that at our January ContactBreakfast and Annual Meeting,where I will give the State of theChamber speech.

The DutchessCounty Region-al Chamber of

Commerce is proud torecognize McHoul Fu-neral Home andHudsonCadillac Buick GMC asNext Generation Awardrecipients at the 2013Gala on Saturday, Feb-ruary 2, 2013. Theseawards are bestowed an-nually on local business-es that have survivedand thrived through the agesafter being passed from genera-tion to generation. The HudsonValley Young Professionals andthe Chamber’s Board of Directorsjointly select each honoree.

In 1966, Marikay and DougMcHoul moved to HopewellJunction from Boston, where theywere working for Doug’s father,Alexander F. McHoul at McHoulFuneralHome inDorchester,MA.They purchased a funeral homein the Hudson Valley, renaming itMcHoul Funeral Home, Inc.

In the years since, McHoulFuneral Home has undergonemany renovations and additions,but has remained family ownedand operated for three genera-tions. The McHoul’s acknowl-edge the importance of treatingtheir client families with the samedignity and respect that theythemselves would expect. Doug-las A.A. McHoul and his foursisters, Lori Cassidy, Mary Ann

Menuau, Bonnie Wiegard andHeather Sulca, currently run thedaily operations of the home.

Michael Mullaney enteredthe automotive industry in 1975and gained experience in all fac-ets of the business throughout hislong career. Already a residentof Dutchess County, he openedHudson in June of 1995. Whilethe cars have changed over theyears, Hudson has always beenrun as a family business. Mike’swife Rita and two oldest sonsRyan and Matthew all work at thedealership. A third son, Dennis,is occupied in local law enforce-ment.

Ryan and Matt grew up work-ing at Hudson through highschool, mostly in the parts de-partment. After graduating col-lege with a degree in automotivemechanics, Ryan is now involvedin the day-to-day operations ofthe parts department. Matt, witha bachelor’s degree in business,became a salesman on the show-

room floor and has since transi-tioned into a managerial role.

Hudson Cadillac Buick GMChas now sold over 17,000 new andused vehicles by always emphasiz-ing the best in customer service.That commitment will remainconstant as Mike, Matt, and Ryancontinue to grow and lead thebusiness into the future.

The Chamber’s annual Galawill take place at The Grandviewin Poughkeepsie. The theme thisyear is “The Great Gala at TheChamber Club.” Attendees willbe transported back to the timeof speakeasies, when good timesroared and parties stretched tosunrise. Swing with a live jazzband, sip period-inspired cock-tails, dine on fine cuisine, andreconnect with old friends duringthis celebration of a bygone era.

The Ulster Savings Charita-ble Foundation recently awardeda $15,000 grant to the BenedictineHealth Foundation in support oftheir new initiative, the BreastEducation and Breast OutreachProgram (BEBOP).

BEBOP was developed by thestaff of the Fern Feldman AnolickCenter for Breast Health and theOncology Support Program atBenedictine Hospital, a memberof the HealthAlliance of the Hud-son Valley. Approximately 1,200people will be directly served eachyear by BEBOP outreach withboth short-term and long-termoutcomes.

“Lower-income, uninsured andunderinsured women have a greatadvocate in BEBOP,” noted Mary-Rose Warcholak, Executive Direc-tor of the Ulster Savings CharitableFoundation. “We’re pleased to sup-port this critical health initiative inour community.”

Many people often ask me,what does The ChamberFoundation do? What is

its purpose?The Chamber Foundation, Inc.

was established to promote educa-tion and training programs for areayouth and professionals with thegoal of enhancing the future of eco-nomic growth in theHudsonValleyregion. The Foundation’s mission isto provide educational opportuni-ties for youth and the workforce, tobuild and strengthen personal andbusiness capacity, develop leader-ship skills and foster a commitmentto community service.

To help carry out this mission,The Chamber Foundation takes ona variety of roles:

Leadership programs:Our leadership programs build

strong individuals, starting at anearly age. The Youth LeadershipProgram, held monthly, is open toall Dutchess County high schoolstudents. Currently over 60 stu-dents are enrolled. The first hourof programming focuses on lead-

ership skills featuring prominentcommunity leaders. In the secondhour, students are split up; juniorsand seniors work on resume build-ing skills/college preparation activ-ities and freshmen and sophomoreswork on Junior Achievement andthe formation of their own com-pany including stock sales, productselection, and sales and marketingtechniques.

The Chamber Foundationcontinues to enhance adult pro-fessional leadership through itsLeadership Dutchess Program.The current class is comprised of28 working professionals of allages and backgrounds who meetmonthly to sharpen leadershipskills. Each Leadership Dutchess

Foundation helps develop leaders, provide scholarships

Tohelp fulfill their mission ofcreating educational oppor-tunities for those attending

local schools, The Chamber Foun-dation, Inc., is again offering a hostof scholarships to Hudson Valleystudents. Last year, the Foundationawarded over $48,000 to deservingscholars in the area, and applica-tions are now open for all 2013scholarships. All interested partiesshould visit ChamberFDN.org toview the complete list of availablescholarships and download any ap-plications. All materials must bepostmarked by March 15, 2013.

The Chamber Foundation, Inc.strongly believes that scholarshipsare a powerful tool in contribut-

ing to the overall development ofa person’s future. There is a widerange of awards available, includ-ing ones in the areas of: culinaryarts, nursing, music, athletics, engi-neering, manufacturing and trade,journalism and communicationsand more. The Foundation schol-arships are extended annually toindividuals who are in need of fi-nancial aid and/or quality based onmerit.

Outside of these two majorprograms, The Chamber Founda-tion continues to build connectionsbetween students and our commu-nity in numerous ways including:College Campus Tours, Spring GolfMentoring and Students MakingConnections. Each of these mini-programs gives select area highschools the opportunity to invitetheir students to connect with lo-cal business professionals and learnabout real word experiences beyondthe classroom. For many, these op-portunities can be remarkable –something that they might not beable to experience otherwise.

Scholarships:Through the support of the

community, as well as the fundrais-ing efforts ofThe Chamber Founda-tion, we are proud to offer a Schol-arship Program providing financialopportunity for Dutchess Countystudents pursuing a variety of edu-cational degrees. Last year over$48,000 was awarded, helping ourarea students to achieve the dreamof success. Applications can now bedownloaded at chamberfdn.org and

are due by March 15 (see article be-low for more information).

Fundraising/Grants:Corporate sponsorships, grants

and community support play majorroles in funding the mission thatThe Chamber Foundation carriesout. Signature events also help toraise much needed funds and in-clude the annual ATHENA AwardsProgram, Twisted Gala, Golf-A-Thon, Bowling Tournament andthe Cosimo DiBrizzi CelebrityServer Dinner. All events benefitThe Chamber Foundation’s Schol-arship Fund as well as the rest ofthe programs administered by TheChamber Foundation.

As you can see, The ChamberFoundation is a vibrant part of the

Dutchess County Regional Cham-ber of Commerce and we have abright future ahead. Adopt-A-Family a big successThe Adopt-A-Family Pro-

gram was a huge success in 2012!Twenty-one businesses and

11 families “adopted” 35 localfamilies that otherwise wouldnot have been able to celebrateChristmas this year. Thanks totheir generosity, 87 childrenreceived a visit from Santa.

TheWorkforce DevelopmentCenter would like to thank theorganizers within these orga-nizations and families for theirtireless efforts to coordinate thecollection, wrapping and deliver-ing of the gifts. Their names arelisted next to the business orfamily below. Helping so manyfamilies is a huge undertakingand requires a group effort. Wewould also like to thank the in-dividuals within these businessesand families who took the time

to read the profiles and select anappropriate gift for each of thefamily members.

Many of these businesses andfamilies offer their support yearafter year. Adopt-A-Family is notsimply a hand-out, it is a truly ahand-up. An expansion on the nationalawareness event, where collegecoaches wear sneakers with theirgame suits to bring awareness tothe American Cancer Society,corporations and organizationsacross the country are hosting a

Wear Your Sneakers to Work Day.Individuals simply make a mini-mum donation of $5 to Coachesvs. Cancer for the opportunity towear their sneakers to work onthe Monday following the aware-ness weekend. The Chamber haspledged its participation and en-courages all its members and theirworksites to participate.

It is easy to join this effort andmake a great impact in the fightagainst this dreadful disease. To

all cancer deaths could be avoidedif people took the necessary preven-tive actions to lead a healthy life.

Coaches vs. Cancer is a na-tionwide collaboration betweenthe American Cancer Society andthe National Association of Bas-ketball Coaches. The initiativehelps to increase cancer aware-ness and promote healthy livingamong students, faculty and staff,fans, and the community at largethrough year-round awareness ef-

forts, fundraising activities, andadvocacy programs. Since 1993,coaches have raised $85 millionto support the American CancerSociety’s fight against cancer.
