Late winter snowfall warning Late yesterday afternoon, Environ- ment Canada issued a snowfall warning for the Coquihalla Hwy, Hope to Merritt. They were forecasting total amounts of 15 to 25cm of snow to fall, thanks to a Pa- cific frontal system. Over the summit of Coquihalla Highway, total snowfall amounts up to 25cm were expected by early Wednesday evening, while other southern passes were to receive 10 to 15 cm of snow. The snow is expected to con- tinue Wednesday night into Thursday as another frontal system moves in from the west. Poll on cost of post- secondary education “Higher tuition translates into stu- dents taking on more debt, and that makes it harder for many people in Mer- ritt, Hope, Lillooet and Ashcroft and other towns in this riding to access the programs they need to succeed,” says Sharon McIvor, President of the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology’s Employ- ees’ Association. “BC students and their families are facing massive debt and are paying the highest tuition fees in history. When it comes time to begin their ca- reers, students are saddled with what will be decades of debt to repay.” 79% of people in Fraser-Nicola agree the Province needs to take immediate ac- tion to reduce the cost of post-secondary education (PSE), and 81% say the Province needs to invest more in PSE, ac- cording to a new poll by Strategic Re- search, sponsored by the Federation of Post-Secondary Educators of BC. Measures to lower the cost of post- secondary could include cancelling inter- est on student loans, expanding grants to students from middle- and lower-income families, and lowering tuition. The Federation of Post-Secondary Ed- ucators of BC calculates tuition revenues are $1.2 billion more today than in 2002, an increase of nearly 370%, while the BC government has cut funding by 20% after inflation in the same period. Strategic Research (www.stratresearch.ca) con- ducted an automated phone survey to landline and cellular phones of 469 adults in the Fraser-Nicola rid- ing between February 1-4, 2017. The sample is statis- tically weighted to match the gender and age composition of the region as per most recent Census data. The margin of error for a sample of this size is +/- 4.49%, 19 times out of 20. The flavour of summer In the middle of the night, in the middle of this old-fashion frigid Nicola Valley win- ter, I reached for the only remotely-possible thing available in the house to soothe a con- stant, nagging cough & sore throat… a spoonful of Warez du Bees honey. In that moment, in the semi-dark kitchen with the taps dripping to stave off freezing pipes in the -18°C night, the warm breeze & brilliant sunshine of late August flashed across my taste- buds, with a hint of chives & clover, maybe even lilacs! This moment made me a believer in the taste of ‘local’, and the importance of the dedicated people in this valley who pro- duce our local food — not just for food security, but also for the taste of place! —KL Community Canada 150 celebrations mtg Everyone is welcome to attend the next Canada 150 meeting, Civic Centre today, March 1, 1pm.
