Communism is spreading!• Communists use fear to gain power
– NO freedom, private property, or religion– Stalin killed his own people who spoke
out against his govt. (gulag)• US was afraid commies would take over
the world!
Truman Doctrine• March 1947:
support free people who are resisting armed takeovers
• $400 million to Greece & Turkey to fight commies• It works! Gr & Turk remain free
Marshall Plan
• Feb. 1948: US will give $$$ to any country who needs assistance – food, equipment, etc.
• $12.5 billion
• Barely approved by Congress – but the communist takeover in Czechoslovakia convinces them to act!
• Soviet Union & satellite nations do not accept the $ - why not?
• Rebuilds W. Europe!
