1) What allowed United Nation

Security Forces to get involved

in Korea?

2) What does China’s United Nation Role have

to do with Korea?

Page 11: Cold War: Korean War

There are 15 members of the UN Security Council. 5 are Permanent Members– Always on

There are 15 members of the UN Security Council. Who are the 5 are Permanent Members– Always on?

10 are Non-Permanent Members – Change (5 each year)

5 Permanent Members of UN Security Council

1) USA 2) Britain 3) France 4) Russia 5) China

Page 14: Cold War: Korean War

Any of the 5 Permanent Members can VETO (block) any Security Council Measure

Ironically, in 1950 on the day the Security Council held emergency hearings about what to do about Korea,

where was the USSR?

Ironically, in 1950 on the day the Security Council held emergency hearings about what to do about Korea,

where was the USSR?

5 Permanent Members of UN Security Council   wrong

1) USA 2) Britain 3) France 4) ? 5) China

According to the USSR, the wrong China was serving on the security council. So the USSR was protesting until the “Right” China joined the security council.

At this time, who did the USSR think should represent China?Communist China (Main Land)

Page 20: Cold War: Korean War

So what does this have to do with the Korean War?

5 Permanent Members of UN Security Council   wrong

1) USA 2) Britain 3) France 4) ? 5) China

Hence, the Russians were NOT at the meeting and could NOT VETO the vote to give military help to South Korea.

So began the Korea War…

Page 21: Cold War: Korean War

So what does this have to do with the Korean War?

5 Permanent Members of UN Security Council   wrong

1) USA 2) Britain 3) France 4) USSR? 5) China

…Had the USSR been there to VETO (BLOCK), there might NOT have been a Korean War.

Also, there might NOT be a North & South Korea, but simply a Korea (communist?)
