As we move into the fall and leaves begin
to change color, our scholars have suc-cessfully transitioned into their new grade
levels. As I make my way through class-rooms, our scholars are engaged in excit-ing lessons that keep them motivated and
teachers are challenging scholars to con-tinually learn and perform at higher levels.
I would like to thank all parents and stakeholders that participated in our Fall
Festival. We had over 500 parents, schol-ars, volunteers, and community partners
attend our 2018 RCE Fall Festival.
Please make plans to join us for some up-
coming events like our SLT meeting on November 8th and our Winter Evening of
the Arts on November 6th. Also, please remember report cards go home on November 9th. Did you know that you
can keep up to date with your child’s grades on PowerSchool? You can use
your child’s login information or get a
parent login from the school office.

December 2018
November will be a busy and
exciting month! We have sever-
al special activities planned.
Please make sure that your
child is at school and on time
everyday so that he/she does
not miss any of our educational
experiences. School begins at
8:00. There is a 7:55 bell to
make sure that students arrive
in class before 8:00, anything
after 8:00 is considered tardy.
As the cooler weather ap-
proaches, please make sure that
all jackets, hats, gloves, etc. are
labeled with your child’s name.
for meaning.
Thank you for participating in our con-ferences, it was very rewarding to talk
about your wonderful children and discuss the growth and progress your child has made thus far in first grade.
We look forward to partnering with you for a productive and successful school year. Together, we make a great
team! J In writing, first graders are engaged in a unit called Small Moments: Personal
Narrative Writing. Scholars are learning to take the everyday events of their lives and make them into focused, well-
structured stories--doing their very best
to communicate those stories through pictures and more writing.
Our Reader’s Workshop lessons are teaching scholars how to tackle tricky
words – using all they know about letters, sounds, and word patterns to help them read. They will work on
fixing words when they know some-thing is not right with the goal of be-coming stronger readers. Remind your scholar that a good reader uses all the
strategies they know to decode unfamil-iar words and read for meaning.
Have a great month and a peaceful, happy Thanksgiving!

Third Grade (2028)
In math we are moving on to multi-
plication and division strategies. You
can help your child at home by prac-
ticing multiplication flash cards.
We are moving our focus from liter-
ature to nonfiction and informational
text. We are continuing to build our reading strategies by asking and
answering questions about the text,
identifying the main idea and sup-
porting details, looking at how infor-
mation is related and connected, and
using text features to clarify and
explain information.
It was a pleasure meeting
with you at parent/teacher
conferences! Second graders
have been working hard
first quarter. In reading, we
have been focusing on story
elements and tackling tricky
words.
In Writing, we are continuing to learn how to
plan, sketch, and stretch our small moment
narrative stories.
In Math, we are learning about place value,
how to use the hundreds chart and number
line to add and subtract, and strategies to
solve word problems.
As we move into the next quarter, there are
many ways you can help promote your child’s
academic growth at home. Read with your
child for 20-30minues each night. Check for
understanding by asking them questions about
what they read. Encourage them to write their
responses as well as go back into the book to
show where they found their answer. The
ability to find evidence from the text and put
it down in writing will help boost their com-
prehension and reading level. Please continue
to practice addition and subtraction facts, story
problem concepts, telling time, and counting
coins with your second grader at home.
Attendance Counts!
The attendance rate is important
because students are more likely to
succeed in academics when they
attend school consistently. It’s diffi-
cult for the teacher and the class to
build their skills and progress if stu-
dents are frequently absent. Please
partner with us to increase school
attendance.
If your child will be absent from
school, please send an e-mail to
attend-
Please be sure to include the follow-
ing information:
Your child's name and grade/
teacher
Parent name
The reason for absence
A callback phone number
You can also call the school at 980-
343-6480.
This will help us tremendously. Thanks for your support!
Second Grade (2029)
The Technology Services team has worked diligently to streamline student access to digital tools.
Student logins have been updated to a more consistent format using the student’s state ID and unique
password. Students will be able to access more of the digital tools available in the NCEdCloud portal. This change is a big step in making digital learning and access to digital tools, easier for students from
any computer with Internet. Please review the table below for updated login information.

In reading, the scholars will start reading
nonfiction/ informational text. Through the
use of various nonfiction/ informational text
the students will be able to summarize,
identify main idea, determine the meaning
of words (context clues), and describe the
overall structure (cause and effect, prob-
lem/ solution, comparison, and chronology)
of the text.
In writing the scholars will start working
on writing informational stories. The stu-
dents will be able to introduce a topic and
group related information and then develop
the topic, elaborating with some facts,
definitions, and details.
Scholars will be starting Place Value. Stu-
dents will learn how to compare numbers
and write numbers in standard, expanded,
and word form. Students will then begin
addition and subtraction. Students will use
the standard algorithm to add and subtract
numbers to 100,000. In Science students
will be learning about fossils and earth
changes.

The Encore Team Presents...
Family mealtime can contribute to
greater academics success
Family mealtime is linked to fewer
behavior problems
Families who share mealtime at
least three times a week are more
likely to eat healthy.
Is your family ready for
#Device Free Dinner?
Don’t worry, you can do it at home, at a
restaurant, on the go, or anywhere that
adults and kids can share distraction-free
time.
1) Plan a mealtime when kids and
adults will be together. (It doesn’t
even have to be dinner. Breakfast
works, too!
2) Turn off the TV and put away all
electronics (phones, tablets, lap-
tops).
3) Talk to each other…and have fun!
During the month of November, fifth grade
scholars will be reading nonfiction books and
creating a Nonfiction Investigation poster
using a rubric. Fifth graders will make
inferences (RI 5.1), identify main ideas and
key details (RI 5.2), explore relationships
between ideas (RI 5.3), and create a glossa-
ry of relevant words (RI 5.4). Scholars will
also have the opportunity to read articles
related to their chosen topic to compare
and contrast the information in the article
to information in the book (RI 5.9). Please
encourage your scholar to read nonfiction
books and articles this month and discuss
any new learning that takes place.
This month we will be working with Frac-
tions. We have started by finding equiva-
lent fractions to add and subtract fractions
with unlike denominators. We then begin to
multiply fractions.
Don't forget if your child
would like to attend the
Washington DC trip
payments must be made
by the due dates. Please
contact your child’s
teacher if you have
questions.
Fifth Grade (2026)
The school year is already in full steam, we all want our scholars to feel successful in the classroom. Getting your scholar to school by 8:00 a.m. each day will set
them up for success. Scholars entering the building after 8:00 a.m. will be consid-ered tardy. Please let us know how we can support you with getting your scholar
to school each day by 8:00 a.m.
“The time is always right to do what is right.”- Martin Luther King Jr. Our
character trait for November is Honesty. Honesty means speaking the truth, ad-mitting to your actions even if you’ll get in trouble. As our scholars move through their school years, it is important they learn to do the right thing and make the
right choices. Please feel free to reach out to a school counselor for any questions
you may have.
