Greetings,     

Wow, what a busy week, which started on Sunday with Bowling in Mooresville.  I saw a few of our families enjoying a fun and cheap afternoon of bowling. We have our annual International Night this evening that will no doubt be an awesome cultural experience for the many families in attendance.  I hope each of our families are planning to at least stop by and walk through booths of the 20+ countries represented.  Remember, students will get extra credit by showing their stamped passport to Social Studies Teachers.  To culminate our Bring Your Family To School Week, we will be filling snack packs on Friday for Ada Jenkins and then enjoying a Davidson College Basketball game on Saturday. I wanted to express a HUGE THANK YOU to all of the families who made chili, cornbread, or provided chips and other toppings for the teacher luncheon on Wednesday as part of our Book Fair preview.  Special thanks to PTSA for coordinating this event for our staff...the food was great :-) Our try-outs for boys baseball, girls and boys soccer, and girls and boys track will be held next week.  Forms should have already been submitted to Coach Riehl by today.  

We also have our "Straight A" Honor Roll Breakfast next Tuesday morning in the gymnasium at 8:00 am for 6th grade and 8:45 am for 7th & 8th grade. 

Finally, our teachers will have mid-quarter grades up-to-date in Parent Portal by 5:00 pm on Thursday, February 25.  Hopefully, parents are looking at grades weekly to help support students stay on track at all times throughout the year.

As part of Take Your Family to School Week, all BMS students will be taking part in a snack bag service project for the Ada Jenkins Center's LEARN Works program.  The LEARN Works program helps to close the achievement gap for economically disadvantaged children and serves students in grades 1-8, from Bailey Middle School and Cornelius, Davidson, and JV Washam Elementary Schools.

Scholastic Book Fair opens today! 

The Book Fair will run February 18th- 25th.  

Open daily the 18th - 24th, 8:45 am - 4:00 pm. 

Open on the 25th, 8:45 am - 10:30 am.  

Evening hours during International Night will be on the 18th, 6:00 - 7:30 pm. The media center will be USA, so be sure to come in for a snack and to get your passport stamped. Parents, can't make it to the school during the Book Fair?  Visit our online book fair, open now through February 25.  Online orders will arrive at the school approximately 7-10 business days after the online fair closes.  You'll find great middle school titles and even more books ranging from preschool to adult. 

Orders will ship to the school for free!   You can send wish lists to family including those who are out of town! Orders can be placed between February 11 and February 25.

We will have some of your favorite series of books on hand so come check out what you might be missing.  You can also help the school build classroom libraries by purchasing books for teachers from the Classroom Wish List and by donating to the All for Books™ program.  All donations to the All for Books™ program are matched by Scholastic Book Fairs and donated to the Kids In Need Foundation and Kids in Distressed Situations, Inc.

At the Bailey Book Fair, students have a chance to win several different prizes! 

Guess  how many pieces of retro candy are in the jar!  Winner gets a basket of treats! Check your locker each morning to see if you've won the Locker Lottery for a poster or

book fair cash! Donate 50 cents and receive a lollipop!  The money will go to the All for Books™ program. Donate $1 or more to the All for Books™ program and be entered in a drawing for a prize

basket. If we raise over $400 for the All for Books™ program, there will be a designated day for

students to be able to wear a hat, slippers or flip flops to school!!!

Please plan to attend our evening event on February 18th during International Night. The media center will be USA. Don't forget to get your passport stamped!   

Come check out all the wonderful books and merchandise the fair has to offer! It will be a great time to stock up for some Spring Break and summer reading!

BMS International NightThursday, February 18, 2016

This outstanding event brings together Bailey Middle School families to share the many cultures represented in our school. Plan to take the entire family on a trip around the world to: Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Puerto Rico, Sweden, Norway, Austria, Spain, Lebanon, Venezuela, Vietnam, Bahamas, USA. 

This event is truly a BMS favorite, and volunteers make it happen.  There's still time to help out! Please click HERE to see where you can plug-in for the night.

There are lots of fun events planned for the celebration, including:* Country displays* Arts and crafts* Music* International food donated by Bailey families* Spring Book Fair evening event "Feelin' Groovy" in the Media Center* Entertainment by Bailey Drama, Dance, Chorus, Band & Orchestra* Hi5-Linx - Global Cultural Exchange Program* Barbara Locklear, American Indian Teaching Artist & Storyteller* Bailey Middle School Summer International Trip* Passports for all students will be handed out in the lobby. Students will get their passport stamped as they visit the different countries!

Any student who brings in their stamped passport to school on Friday will get extra credit for Social Studies!

BMS' First Annual Career Fair

This year the Bailey Counseling Department, in collaboration with the CTE Department, are excited to announce our First Annual Bailey Career Fair.  

On Friday April 15th, 2016 we will have our 8th grade students attend a career fair here at school.  Our focus this year is to provide 8th graders with information and exposure to a wide variety of professions, opportunities, and interests within our community.  This experience will help foster their future endeavors as they begin their high school journey.  

We would like to extend an invitation to parents and community members who would like their business or career showcased.  If you or someone you know in the community would like to participate please take a few moments to complete this Google Form, in order to provide contact and business/professional information so our counselors can be in touch.  Thank you so much for your time and we look forward to a successful career fair.

 

Last  few days to make your thoughts known

 The School Board is seeking input from parents, CMS employees and other Mecklenburg County residents to help inform how CMS students are assigned to schools.

The survey is designed to gain valuable feedback on what's important to community members when considering their child's education or public education overall.

The survey is part of the Board's comprehensive student assignment review process which started in February 2015 and is expected to continue throughout the year.

Maximizing academic achievement by every student in every school is our core mission. The student assignment process is our opportunity to rethink how we can provide families with greater choices to satisfy the unique interests and aspirations of our students as we prepare them to become future leaders in our communities, businesses and workplaces.

Survey results will be used to inform any changes to the district's student assignment plan, which would take effect in the 2017-2018 school year.

The success of our public schools impacts all of us. That's why we want anyone interested in the success of our public schools - people across all areas of our county -- to participate in the survey.

 The online survey can be taken on any computer or mobile device. Simply go to the CMS website and click on the Student Assignment Survey link at the top of the homepage. You can also access the survey on any school website.

The online survey can be taken in English or Spanish.

Individual paper copies in other languages will be made available upon request.

Celebrating our students

A and A/B Honor roll celebrations are scheduled for Tuesday, February 23.

We will have a morning / light breakfast celebration for those who achieved straight As in 2nd quarter, 

and a student celebration in the afternoon for those who achieved straight As and A/B. 

Invitations for the A Honor Roll breakfast will come home with students next week.

You can also link several schools or clubs at one time.  For example, if you are linked to an elementary school or a club, you can link to our PTSA as well. 

We are excited to announce that Bailey Middle School has started a partnership with Publix grocery stores. Publix Partner cards are available at the Welcome Desk or email me and I will get one to you.  All you have to do is show the cashier your card at the BEGINNING of your transaction when checking out and the cashier will scan it for you. For every $37,500 Bailey supporters spend at Publix we can earn up to $250 per quarter. If we don't meet the $37,500 in a quarter the tally will run into the next quarter.

Please consider getting involved even if you have never participated in PTSA activities before!  The role of the PTSA is to provide a liaison between Bailey Middle School parents, students, teachers, and administration.  It is the fundamental principle of the PTSA organization to fill its positions with interested and committed parents from diverse backgrounds and opinions to provide the best possible voice for the school.

Word Wizard Writing Club

Word Wizards Writing ClubMonthly Event Offered to 6th Grade Students at Cornelius Public Library

What:  A preteen creative writing and art clubWhen:  Monday, March 7th at 6:30 p.m.

Where:  Cornelius Public Library

This month, the club is hosting two 14-year-old authors, Sydney Campanella of Huntersville and Lauren-Kate Stewart of Davidson, who have published mystery and fantasy novels, to read some of their writing and discuss how preteens can self publish their work.

Participants are also encouraged to bring some of their own writing to share. Refreshments will be served. To register, call 704-416-3800 or stop by the library.

Golf Squad is back at BMS

Golf Squad at Bailey Middle is for both new & continuing 6-8th grade students.  This program provides opportunities for your child to learn the social skills required to enjoy the game of golf for a lifetime.  

Chances are your student will be asked either in college or their professional careers to play golf with friends or colleagues. Our PGA Professionals will equip them with the necessary etiquette, terminology, and technical skills to be comfortable accepting those invitations.

Start Date:  Tuesday, March 8thTime:  4:30 - 5:30 pm for eight Tuesdays
