Reflection

Jesus got his start in ministry through the urging of his mother. Who urges you to pray, go to Church, and do good works?

“There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.

Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him,

‘They have no wine.’ And Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.’

His mother said to the servers, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each

holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told the them, ‘Fill the jars with water.’

So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, ‘Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.’

So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from

— although the servers who had drawn the water knew —, the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him,

‘Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one;

but you have kept the good wine until now.’ Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee

and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.”

Annual Diocesan Appeal 2019

A collaboration in which every parish contributes toward the support of ministries and services ren-dered by our Diocese of San Jose. This year’s theme is “Ministry- Hand in Hand.” The Cathe-dral goal this year is $137,000. This year, funding for Catholic School Education will be included in ADA funding. Each household taking part in the campaign helps the Cathedral parish reach its goal toward funding education, training and service to the faithful of our Diocese. If you have not received an information packet in the mail, we have them available in the church. If we achieve 100% partici-pation, we will not only match but surpass last year’s success! Contributions that surpass the goal are rebated to our parish directly. Together, we can make it happen!

Gratitude November 9 we had the Day of Recollection for En-gaged couples. This is a complete day and there are many elements to it. We have parish volunteers that make presentations regarding the different areas to consider in marriage. There is a team of food prepar-ers that are also volunteers that prepare both break-fast and lunch for the couples. This day ends with the attendees going to the 4:30 mass. Fr. Jeff Fer-nandez coordinates the entire day. December 8 we had the Advent retreat for the parish. This is a bilingual event with presentations in Span-ish and English. We had an overwhelming response to this retreat. This day began with mass and ended with lunch. Parish Staff volunteered along with pa-rishioners to make this event happen under Fr. Jeff’s direction. December 12 is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The day started with Mañanitas at 5:00am followed by Mass at 6:00am with Bishop Carlos Sevilla. The Guadalupanos served refreshments after mass. There were volunteers that worked hard on the environment to prepare the Altar. The Liturgy volunteers helped with the mass and of course our Guadalupano group volunteered to host the reception. The Season of Hope Concert series took place from December 12 to December 23. Sharon Miller along with volunteers worked tirelessly to make this hap-pen. Our maintenance staff worked very hard as well with the set up and take down of the church fur-nishings each night. The preparation for Christmas is a huge undertaking. Fr. Jeff and his team of volunteers (which included our maintenance staff) transformed the environment in the church with very little time between the last week of Advent. There are many Liturgical minis-ters, which includes the musicians who share their time at such a busy season to insure that our liturgies are the best. We are very grateful to everyone that helps us and we could not do it without you. If you would like to join us as a volunteer, please contact the parish office. Tanis Zuccaro

Today’s Gospel describes the beginning of Jesus' ministry and his first miracle. This event follows Jesus' call of his first disciples. Jesus and his disciples were invited to a wedding at Cana, as was Je-sus' mother, Mary. Liturgically, the wed-

ding at Cana is closely associated with the baptism of the Lord and the adoration of the infant Jesus by the Magi. In this context, the sign Jesus performs here is celebrated as an epiphany or a manifestation of Jesus' divinity.Yet awareness of Jesus' impending passion and death is ever present in John's Gospel. When Jesus tells his mother that his hour has not yet come, he protests against her wishes in language that John will use again when reporting Jesus' Last Supper with his disciples. When Jesus stooped to wash his disciples' feet, John writes that Jesus knew that his hour had come. Mary is not mentioned by name, but referred to instead as the mother of Jesus. She is influential in Jesus' first sign. She will also be present at his Crucifixion, a wit-ness to the final manifestation of his divinity. At the wedding, the disciples are said to begin to believe, but no mention is made as to whether the other wedding guests are even aware of what has happened. Marriage and wedding feasts in Scripture describe God's salvation and the Kingdom. Jesus will re-interpret and fulfill Yah-weh's promise to Israel. Jesus establishes the New Cove-nant. A hint about what the New Covenant would be like is evident in the deed that Jesus performs. Asked to help with the awkward situation that the absence of wine at a wedding feast would create, Jesus' miracle produces vast quantities of wine—six jars holding thirty gallons each are filled to overflowing with choice wine. This lavish response to a simple human need is a vision of the abundance of God's kingdom. It challenges us to respond generously when confronted with human need today, bringing the Kingdom of God to fulfillment among us Loyola Press

S aint of the Week Saint Sebastian January 20 (c. 256 – c. 287) Almost nothing is historically certain about Sebastian except that he was a Roman

martyr, was venerated in Milan even in the time of Saint Ambrose and was buried on the Appian Way, probably near the present Basilica of St. Sebastian. Devotion to him spread rapidly, and he is mentioned in several martyrologies as early as 350. The legend of Saint Sebastian is important in art, and there is a vast iconography. Scholars now agree that a pious fable has Sebastian entering the Roman army because only there could he assist the martyrs without arousing suspicion. Finally he was found out, brought before Emperor Dio-cletian and delivered to Mauritanian archers to be shot to death. His body was pierced with arrows, and he was left for dead. But he was found still alive by those who came to bury him. He recovered, but refused to flee. One day he took up a position near where the emperor was to pass. He accosted the emper-or, denouncing him for his cruelty to Christians. This time the sentence of death was carried out. Sebastian was beaten to death with clubs. He was buried on the Appian Way, close to the catacombs that bear his name. Reflection The fact that many of the early saints made such a tremendous impression on the Church—awakening widespread de-votion and great praise from the greatest writers of the Church—is proof of the heroism of their lives. As has been said, legends may not be literally true. Yet they may express the very substance of the faith and courage evident in the lives of these heroes and heroines of Christ. Saint Sebastian is the Patron Saint of Athletes.

An encounter comprised of young people from around the world with the Holy Father in a festive, religious and cul-tural atmosphere that demonstrates the dynamism of the Church and gives testimony to the relevance of Jesus’ message today. “This is more than an event. It is a time of deep spiritual renovation, whose fruits benefit all of socie-ty” (Benedict XVI). This is an extraordinary process of evangelization in order to strengthen pastoral outreach to our youth. It takes place every three years. The last World Youth Day encounter took place in Krakow in 2016.
