SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

MASS WITH CARDINAL TOBIN —MAY 1

The new Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Newark, Cardinal Joseph Tobin, has advised that he will be making a pastoral visit to our Deanery on Monday, May 1 (the feast of St. Joseph the Worker). After

a dinner meeting with the priests of our Deanery, he will celebrate Mass at St. Peter the Apostle Church in River Edge at 7:30 pm for the people of our parishes who wish to attend. The evening will conclude with a town hall-style meeting. Because of this gathering, which we hope many will be able to attend, there will be NO Novena on Monday, May 1 at Saint Joseph.

DUTY TO GOD AND COUNTRY

The Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of Pack/Troop 142 and their leaders gathered at the 9:00 am Mass last Sunday to commemorate the 107th Anniversary of Scouting in the U.S. May they continue to be inspired to reach out in service to those in need.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY —APRIL 23

Saint Joseph Parish will have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and the Divine Mercy chaplet followed by a talk on Divine Mercy and the celebration of the Sacrament

of Reconciliation on Sunday, April 23 (the Sunday after Easter) starting at 1:30 pm in the Upper Church (and concluding at approximately 3:15 pm). The Legion of Mary will distribute Divine Mercy Novena pamphlets at the doors of the church TODAY. On each day of the Novena, which begins on Good Friday and goes until Divine Mercy Saturday (April 22 this year), we pray for God’s mercy for different purposes.

ILLUMINATING THE WAY OF THE CROSS You have probably noticed how our Stations of the Cross on the Harrison St. side of the church have recently begun to glow with renewed beauty. That is happening thanks to the extraordinary talent of professional artists Andrzej and Bożena Praszczyk (shown below on the right) of B&A Atelier in Chester, NJ. The couple hail from Poland and have made a career of both restoring and creating original works of art for churches. Andrzej recognized our Stations as very likely being the work of Daprato Statuary (now Daprato Rigali Studios) established in Chicago in 1860 and

Our beautiful Stations of the Cross are over 66 years old. As you can see in the photo on the far left, they were faded with age and some were chipped and damaged. Others had even lost the cross at the top. The photo at the immediate left and on the cover shows the striking difference made by the restoration. The work will be completed in the coming weeks. We are very grateful to all the donors to the “We Are Living Stones” capital campaign who made this possible.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “As they were marching out, they came upon a man of Cyrene, Simon by name; this man they pressed into service to carry his cross.” MATTHEW 27:32 The Lord calls us to love God and to love our neigh-bor. Every day we are presented with opportunities to love our neighbor and help him “carry his cross.” These opportunities aren’t usually big events, they are usually ordinary occurrences like helping someone carry their groceries or holding the door open for them. The key is putting the other person’s needs before our own and not expecting anything in return.

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

This weekend’s Palm Sunday Masses recall Our Lord’s entry into Jerusalem, where he will

accomplish the Paschal Mystery, his central mission and his chief reason for entering into human life. And we are summoned to observe Holy Week, the Church’s most important time of worship. Its principal days are called the Sacred Triduum. The Roman Missal says of them that

The Church solemnly celebrates the greatest mysteries of our redemption, keeping by means of special celebrations the memorial of her Lord, crucified, buried, and risen.

On Holy Thursday we commemorate “the institution of the Holy Eucharist and of the priestly Order, and the commandment of the Lord concerning fraternal charity,” with the last point of emphasis underscored by the affecting ceremony in which the celebrant washes the feet of parishioners, recalling the humble service Jesus performed at the Last Supper as a permanent lesson for his followers to imitate. On Good Friday we worship in honor of Jesus’s sufferings and death, the high price he paid to save us from our sins and the most convincing evidence of the strength of God’s love for us. After a communal reading of St. John’s Gospel of the Passion, we will come forward to venerate the Cross and, after doing so, to receive Holy Communion. After the daytime hours of Holy Saturday pass in stark silence, the Easter Vigil, the first Mass of Easter and “the greatest and most noble of all solemnities,” pierces the night with the joy brought us by the Risen Lord and his gift of Baptism, by which the unexcelled gifts of Christ first reach us. St. John Chrysostom, the most revered of the Eastern Fathers of the Church, beautifully described why these days are appropriately seen as the Christian version of the ancient Jewish festival of Passover when he wrote that

… the sacrifice of the true Passover is for us the beginning of eternal life. Because it revolves in cycles and never comes to an end, the year is a symbol of eternity. Christ, the sacrifice that was offered for us, is the beginning of the world to come. He puts an end to our former life, and through the regenerating waters of baptism in which we imitate his death and resurrection, he gives us the beginning of a new life.

PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD ~ APRIL 9, 2017

PASSION PLAY (LIVING STATIONS OF THE CROSS) The Youth Group will present the Passion Play in the Upper Church on Good Friday, April 14 at 7:30 pm.

A FOND FAREWELL For many years Saint Joseph Parish has been blessed to have several members of the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers of North America living in what we call the “Brothers Residence” located next to the church on

Grand Street. Currently living there are Brother Michael Valdes (who has opened our church daily, serves as lector for our 7:00 am Mass and whose beautiful artwork, in particular his rendering of St. Joseph and the child Jesus, graces our

church), Brother Luke Gilchrist (who has served as both a lector and Minister of Holy Communion at Saint Joseph and who has been a faithful and dedicated member of our Social Concerns Ministry, New Hope for

Children and Men’s Cornerstone), and the newest resident, Brother James Fagan who joined us in May of last year. (Brother Ben Walsh moved to St. Joseph Residence in New Rochelle, NY in January.) Last month, Brother Kevin Griffith,

Province Leader, wrote to inform us that “after many years of residing at St. Joseph’s Parish, our Brothers will be moving on to new assignments…effective July 1, 2017. These changes have come about due to recent deaths and illnesses in our Christian Brother communities at both St. Joseph’s and at Bergen Catholic. With smaller numbers and aging Brothers, our Province Leadership believes that the time is right to make these changes. “Our Brothers who have resided at St. Joseph’s over the years have greatly enjoyed being a part of your parish. We leave with a bit of sadness, as it is never easy to depart from a beloved community, but also with much appreciation for having had the opportunity and privilege to be among the people of St. Joseph’s parish for many years. “Thus, on behalf of our Brothers, allow me to extend our gratitude to you and to the faithful of your parish for your support and fellowship … . Please know that while our Brothers will be physically leaving the residence, their hearts shall remain forever.” Please join us in thanking the Brothers for their faithful and loving friendship and their many years of dedicated service. Their time at Saint Joseph has been a great blessing to our parish. May God bless them in turn for their goodness and grant them many happy years ahead.

DAY OF FAST & ABSTINENCE

GOOD FRIDAY (April 14) is an obligatory day of fast and abstinence. When fasting,

Catholics (age18 until age 59) are permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal.

GOOD FRIDAY PONTIFICAL COLLECTION

FOR THE HOLY LAND Every year, each parish in the United States takes up a collection on Good Friday, as designated by the Holy Father. This collection helps support the work of the Franciscans in the Holy Land. The money is used to care for the

people and places of the Holy Land. This collection keeps Christianity alive in this area made holy by the life, suffering, death and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Your support is greatly needed. We hope you will be generous.

RICE BOWL DONATIONS DUE Your check (please no cash or coins) made out to “Saint Joseph Church” and memo’d “Operation Rice Bowl” must be dropped off at or mailed to the parish office no

later than April 12.

GOOD FRIDAY PRAYER FOR LIFE The members of the Legion of Mary (Bergen County) and the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal invite you to join them on Good Friday, April 14 at 9:30 am to pray the Stations of the Cross, the Rosary and the Chaplet for Divine Mercy in reparation for abortion. They will assemble at the Englewood , NJ train station parking

lot at the corner of Demarest and Dean Street and march to the abortion clinic at 40 Engle Street. This is a peaceful, prayerful event. No signs or posters. “Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of Life, pray for us.”
