Notes from the CAL President
Amanda Morena
Spring Renewal
Spring is almost here. The creative forces of nature will steadily move
up our United States, eventually reaching Canton, Ohio. The beauty of
nature’s awakening is bestowed on all who choose to see.
The creative force is in every artist. In the physical sense our cell
mechanisms and organisms constantly energize and renew our bodies.
Likewise our minds and hearts evaluating what surrounds. In turn a
newness emerges. Our trained eyes, minds and hands build something
better.
Enjoy this amazing time of regeneration and discovery.
For the first time this year a seed catalog will be delivered to my
mailbox. I have always enjoyed seeing the pictures of the full grown
flowers, fruits and vegetables that each seed is capable of growing. This
year, my intention is to make my garden better than
the year before. Appreciating that every stage of the
tended garden is a delight to the senses.

Funny Side of Art
Where does a cow hang his paintings? In a mooooseum.
Did you hear about the artist who paints in jail? He had a brush
with the law.
How many visitors to an art gallery does it take to change a light bulb?
Two. One to do it and one to say "Huh! My four-year old could've done
that!"
A motorcycle cop approached a motorist stopped in the middle of the road
holding up traffic just before a river overpass. The officer noticed the driver
wearing a beret and scratching away in a sketchbook frantically. He asked
the driver, "What in the world are you doing?" The driver replied, "The sign
says Draw Bridge!"
No matter what stage you are as an artist, appreciate those who enjoy your
garden of delights. Allow others to enjoy the product of your artistic husbandry.
When they see and feel in this garden their senses are refined and heightened.
Let us relax and enjoy the benefit of our hard work.
Do We Have Social Responsibility as Artists?
In light of recent cries of despair, their voices silenced, what can we say? What
should we say? It is important for each voice to be genuine. Your unique voice
of calling is significant. Do not stifle any colors, tones or values
no matter how dark or light. Art can speak verses too high for
prose or deep things forbidden by society and then traverse every
place in the spectrum. We communicate what it is to be human.
Your voice is important. It can touch others (perhaps more
importantly yourself) the way nothing else can.
All young passionate adults should have a healthy outlet for their voice. They
should be heard, not stifled. Too often our young people are exposed to voices
that we do not pay attention to. We know not what they say. My hope is each
young person can have the tools to deal with despair; to express it, to have a
voice to carry them through.
As artists we channel different messages. All are important. My
hope is most will take time to stop to hear the subtle voices. These
are most important. I consider my job as an artist to listen to these
still small voices and amplify what they have to say in the most
poignant form of communication known to me, the visual arts.
Do we have social responsibility as artists? I cannot answer this question for everyone, but I think it is an important question to ask ourselves.

Carolyn Jacob just received another " Best In Category" Award at the Samuel & Celia G. Reinglass Photography Show at the Canton Jewish Community Center. The photograph was a still-life study called "Life In Layers". It presents an intriguing look into the lives of unnamed people, long forgotten, from a simple, deserted cabin wall. I invite you to use your own imaginations as you pick out the details of each layer.

“Reality offers us such wealth that we must cut some of it out on the spot, simplify. The question is, do we always cut out what we should?” - Henri Cartier-Bresson
I discovered the darkroom my sophomore year of college in the fall of 2001. I didn’t ever think of photography as a true art form of art until then. The darkroom is magical. It is when a piece of photographic paper transforms into a positive image from a negative. The chemicals, the enlarger, the developing tools, etc. and even the smell of the chemicals are heavenly to me. I decided to switch from being a graphic design major to photography because I discovered that my passion was not in that media.
Then, my mentor, Andrew Borowiec introduced me to street photography. I was in love with capturing the moment where everything lined up in the picture frame to create the “magical instant when the world falls into apparent order and meaning and may be apprehended by a gifted photographer”; also know as Henri Cartier-Bresson’s “The Decisive Moment.”
For me art is made from my heart and soul. I’m always studying. I discovered that I had talent in middle school and in high school became a Commercial Art student through the McKinley Senior High School and Timken High School program. I enjoyed painting, drawing, and making whatever art I could. Then, I went on to The University of Akron Myer’s School of Art where I graduated with a B.F.A in Photography and a minor in painting. Afterwards, I’ve had various jobs and a medical discharge from the U.S.Navy for medical problems that have occurred since 2005. That discharge happened in
2011 and I turned to art as my therapy to cope with life. So, in a way, art has saved my life and that’s why I put my heart and soul into my paintings, drawings, photographs, and whatever else peeks my interest.

Having taught art for many years to all ages, my art experience covers a variety of media and techniques. I am constantly experimenting with ideas and materials. When something catches my eye or an idea pops into my head, it goes into my brain, mixes with my creativity and comes out as a work of art.
I specialize in acrylic painting and paint a variety of subjects including flowers, animals, still life, landscape, and maritime. Most of my work is representational although I sometimes work with abstracts. I have also developed a technique I call "Puzzle Paintings" in which I cut a board into puzzle type pieces, paint each of these segments individually, them put them back together to create the completed, slightly distorted looking work. These “Puzzle Paintings” are the artwork featured on the March CAL wall.
I also create original art quilts, digital paintings, photographs, ink drawings, gourd art, and various three dimensional art including hand felted wool head figures.

Stark County High School Art Exhibit (March 18, 2018 - April 8, 2018)
Since 1991, the Canton Museum of Art has proudly held the Stark County High School Art
Exhibition. Any high school in Stark County or connected with the Stark County ESC is invited to participate. Students have the chance to show their artwork in a gallery, sell their work, receive awards, and even win financial scholarships! Meanwhile, the public has the opportunity to marvel at the creations of students in our community. The exhibit features original two- and three-dimensional original works by students, created as part of their school curriculums and chosen by the school’s art instructor. Each school is limited to a total of ten entries with no more than two entries per artist. Student works are judged on the basis of both originality and technical ability. On view March 18 - April 8, 2018. Public awards reception is on April 6, 2018 from 5PM-8PM with awards presented at 6PM during the First Friday event.

American Masters | Watercolors (November 23, 2017 - April 8, 2018)
Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, George Luks, John Marin, Maurice Prendergast, and John Singer Sargent are seven exceedingly fine masters of watercolor painting by any standard. This exhibition showcases Canton Museum of Art’s recent acquisition of Childe Hassam’s 1890 impressionist masterpiece, Bleak House, Broadstairs. Watercolor is one of the most challenging mediums to use; the colors need to be carefully controlled or they bleed into one another. In the century following the Civil War, watercolor painting became an important American medium and it was used more freely and creatively than anywhere else in the world. Together, these seven masters contribute importantly to our cultural heritage and give us a standard of creative excellence that is a vast benefit to all of us. Rarely are all seven of these masterworks on display at one time.
Fire and Water: Ceramics and Watercolors (November 23, 2017 - April 8, 2018)
Do Fire and Water mix? They do at the Canton Museum of Art. An art museum is much more than a building. It isn’t built simply with bricks, mortar, and concrete. It is built with a love of art, a commitment from a community, and the hope that the works of art inside can inspire future generations. Through the Canton Museum of Art’s focus on American watercolors and ceramics, CMA has selected a unique identity among museums in Northeast Ohio. Building a strong, vital collection is central to living up to our commitment to the community, and building a lasting legacy for the future. And so, through the fires that built our ceramics, and the water that mixed with color on a palette, we build our collection, and we share these amazing artists and works to inspire visitors, both in the galleries and online. On view November 24, 2017 - April 8, 2018.
