BUILDING EXCELLENCE www.brymor.co.uk Brymor - The New Generation With increasing workload and a strong outlook, Brymor has undergone a management restructure, streamlining our internal communications and offering clients dedicated sector specific management services. The management of the company is now being carried out by Andrew Tull, Managing Director and Peter Geen, Commercial Director with operational heads leading the delivery of each specialist work sector. Stephen Morton explained; “Both Andrew and Peter have been loyal members of my staff for many years. They have always performed, worked hard and I see them as members of my extended family. As Brymor has continued to expand I need more support to take the company forward into 2011. I can now rest assured that Brymor is in safe hands and our clients, suppliers, subcontractors and employees will have a successful and exciting future”. To support this decision further we have also seen the introduction of dedicated Sector Heads who will be managing the operations within our specialist divisions. We believe this will ensure our customers are at the forefront of everything we do, receiving the same consistent ‘right first time’ service on all our projects. This one point of contact will ensure we exceed our customer’s requirements and expectations on all levels. As we all face the continued pressures of the economic downturn, there is no doubt we will all experience another turbulent year but as a company Brymor are confident that with the calibre of our people, our experience and wealth of knowledge in construction, we will continue to remain a prominent contractor within the industry. We look forward to a bright future with all our customers, subcontractors and suppliers and would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your on-going support and great working relationships to date. Working beyond the ‘CALL’ of Duty

Brymor’s Commercial Team has recently finished working on a prestigious £4 Million project for Ericsson in Guildford.

This project consisted of the fast-track refurbishment of a 3 storey office block, built circa 1990. The works were undertaken in phases to ensure minimal disruption to business operations. Throughout the contract the project team needed to react quickly to various customer requests including the installation of a new CAT 6 IT system to conform with ISO 27001. More recently the client required additional meeting rooms, phone booths and lawyer’s offices to accommodate changes within the business. These alterations

were incorporated into an additional phase (2a) and completed within one month, at the end of Phase 2.

This increase in project scope meant that in March this year the project team had to extend its working hours on site to 6am - 10pm, with our site managers working split shifts. The team worked approximately 2,100 man hours per week at the peak, and in total worked in excess of 8500 man hours in that one month.

Brymor wishes to thank Ericsson, Johnson Controls, Allies and Morrison, EC Harris, WSP and ArchTech, as well as our approved subcontractors and suppliers, for their dedication and teamwork approach which made this project a success.

Constructing Smiles at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham

The new state-of-the-art Queen Alexandra Hospital has been developed to bring together the services from the original QA Hospital, St Mary’s Hospital, and the Royal Hospital Haslar, on one site. To accommodate this QA has more than doubled its previous size with about 1400 beds across the new and existing parts of the hospital. This hospital now offers patient facilities that are amongst the best in Europe.

To put the works in to context our healthcare team, consisting of Paul Heather, Mark Ware and Tony Wotton, refurbished 16 wards in the east block, reconfigured the main kitchen, refurbished all 14 operating theatres and completely reformed the sterile services department.

In addition the team worked within A & E, discharge lounge, numerous offices, pharmacy and diagnostic

imaging. They formed 3 new scanner rooms and associated works as well as constructing 13 new theatres and associated suite rooms. These works totalled £6 Million.

Throughout the contract the team were working within very sensitive live environments and had to work with strict hygiene and infection control measures. After a third and final HSDU control of infection inspection Liam Florey project manager for Carillion stated:

“Please take comfort in knowing that by far this is the best quality of finish delivered on the whole of the QAH PFI application, simply unparalleled in finish”.

Thank you and your team for the tenacious effort produced in delivering a building finishes

programme against a timeframe that initially felt insurmountable. Not only did you achieve the finishes programme in the agreed timeframe, but to a quality that has been recognised as “unparalleled”.

I would also like to take this opportunity to single out the determination, conscientiousness and evident ability of Tony Wotten, who pretty well orchestrated the building finishes delivery. Due to the area profile, Tony and I collectively worked through an intense snagging regime that has clearly paid dividends”.

To round off this fantastic scheme Brymor have donated a selection of fun activities and games to the Starfish Ward within the New Paediatric Department to construct smiles from the people who really matter; the patients.

Brymor’s Healthcare Team has been actively working within QA Hospital, Cosham since August 2006. Working as part of Carillion’s construction team, Brymor have refurbished every block, on every floor as well as half of the surrounding buildings.

Brymor has always taken pride in its approach to health and safety training and we are now pleased to be an accredited training centre for the British Safety Council, providing the following courses, all at Level 2: • Supervising Staff Safety • Manual Handling Assessment • Display Screen Assessment • Risk Assessment • Fire Risk Assessment

The first course delivered to employees by Brymor’s accredited QUENSH Team was the ‘Supervising Staff Safely’ four day course. In addition to the material provided in the British Safety Council Course, the delegates also received additional training in communication, report writing, and a practical presentation skills scenario. This element was written in-house by the QUENSH team. The course was externally assessed by the British Safety Council for the supervising safely section and by our own QUENSH team for the additional content.

In total, 23 Site Managers and Supervisors sat the four day supervising staff safely courses and 100% passed.

The proactive approach taken by Brymor’s QUENSH Team encouraged employees to adopt a positive attitude towards these fundamental issues. These training opportunities will now be provided to all managerial staff throughout the organisation as well as our customers and supply chain if requested.

Free CPD CoursesBrymor have also recently provided free CPD seminars on site waste management, manual handling and risk assessment and method statements to customers and subcontractors as well as site based training for operatives in asbestos awareness. If any of our customers are interested in receiving CPD seminars on any of these topics, our team would be more then happy to help. For more details please contact [email protected]

The multi-disciplinary team consisting of nurses, clinical psychologists, eating disorder therapists, a team manager, a dietician, healthcare support staff and an administration team who all work beyond the call of duty to provide this service and are thrilled to be working in the newly refurbished facilities.

Louise Clifford Team Manager stated “We have received positive feedback about our bright and welcoming building and all concerned are very pleased with the work carried out by Brymor.I have always found the workmen polite and thoughtful and I believe that Dean Kelly (Site Manager) took a personal interest and pride in how the project turned out” After a contract programme of 20 weeks Brymor successfully handed over the project to our client on time and to budget. This success and dedication to the projects ensured our client; Hampshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust together with April House’s staff were ready for the grand opening ceremony which took place on Wednesday 3rd August 2010. Sangeeta Bhabra of ITV Meridian was there to carry out the grand opening and it also appeared on ITV Meridian tonight.

Brymor have recently started work on a fire upgrade project at Longwood Park, Slough. Brymor are carrying out this project in partnership with Windsor Housing Association and from the outset both Brymor and our client have made sure the residents of Longwood Park are fully informed and at the forefront of everything we do.

Longwood Park decided to carry out a small competition “Longwood Park Fantasy World Cup”. The competition was open to all the residents and friends of Longwood Park, they had to predict the scores of the 2010 World Cup. Each correct result and prediction carried a score and the highest score won. Barry Tull, Brymor Operations Director was proud to hand over the prizes to the winners, one of which was a £25 Tesco voucher which had been donated by Brymor.

The usual suspects turned out putting together a strong team. It was always going to be tough playing a full 90 minutes but Brymor held their own and Aspire didn’t seem to show much threat, however battled hard.

After a goalless first half both teams were looking for the win, and around the 80th minute Gary Hollins (Brymor Painter) collected the ball and managed to find Dean Smith (QUENSH Manager) who took the gamble and got to the ball first, chipping the keeper and scoring the only goal of the match, getting injured in the process. Overall it was a good team performance.

Brymor’s Football Challenge

More recently Brymor stepped out on SEC’s home turf of Worthy Down to win back some pride after their last defeat. On the 12th July 2010 they played an 8 a side match on a three quarter sized pitch. This arrangement obviously suited Brymor as Barry Tull (Operations Director) put them 1-0 up within 10 minutes with what would have been a wonder volley if it hadn’t come off his trailing shin rather than his intended right boot! Further goals from Dean Smith (QUENSH Manager), Mike Estell (Site Manager) and Ian Thumwood (Managing Quantity Surveyor) made it a comfortable victory. However the 4-0 win could have been bettered with two misses on the line, and one disallowed for offside,

despite two defenders playing Jonathan Gough (Quantity Surveyor) on by a country mile. SEC had their own chances however had no success, but as normal battled hard and played well.

Overall it was yet another great game and a special thanks to Nigel Sutton of SEC who played a great game and became referee at short notice.

We would also like to thank both Aspire and SEC for taking on the almighty Brymor Boys and if any of our other customers would like to take on this football challenge, please do not hesitate to contact [email protected]

When Aspire (Bulford) suggested an 11 a-side football match, Brymor couldn’t shy away from such a challenge, and in April the big match took place.

Brymor’s Housing Team have recently been working in partnership with Portsmouth Housing Association at 247 Fratton Road, Portsmouth.

The scheme was constructed in two phases, phase one comprised of the design and construction of eleven new build flats and the complete refurbishment/re-modelling of a single storey building, formerly known as Glebe Hall, to create three residential maisonettes.

Although Glebe Hall falls within a conservation area it had been subject to a number of arson attacks whilst vacant therefore the building

247 Fratton RoadCode for Sustainable Homes

required a great deal of sympathetic treatment by the team to bring it up to modern-day standards including adding back original features.

Phase two involved the refurbishment/re-modelling of a listed four storey building to create eighteen residential units of varied design, once again incorporating original period features.

To round off the success of this scheme we were awarded Code Rating 3, for the eleven properties on Phase 1, classified ‘Best Practice’.

John Macklin Regional Development Manager for First Wessex stated “We are very pleased with the outcome of the Fratton Road project and the way Brymor delivered it”.

Staff AchievementCongratulations to David Rich (Site Manager) for successfully graduating at Portsmouth Guildhall on 6th July 2010 after passing his certificate and diploma (level four) in Site Management.
