Weekend Wheels2016 – Elite MotorSport Academy

Applications for the 2016 Elite MotorSport Academy are now open and close on March 18, 2016. The successful applicants will attend the Elite Academy camp in Dunedin, scheduled for the week of July 3-10, 2016. The camp will provide a one-week intensive in-camp programme of physical and educational training assistance package of up to nine MotorSport New Zealand recognised race or rally competitors, who have already demonstrated the ability to excel in their chosen motorsport discipline. The new Toyota Hilux SR5 has been a decade in the making so the team from Bay Driver took one out to see

if all that hard work has paid off.After getting a tour of the extensive range of

features in the top-of-the-range Limited Edi-tion from Pacifi c Toyota’s sales manager Mike Ranstead, the fi rst thing we noticed after hopping in the driver’s seat and hitting the starter button is the sound – or lack of it.

When you’re sitting in the cabin with the windows up, the new 2.8L turbo diesel engine confi rms Mikes promise that “the new Hilux is a much more refi ned car-like pack-age than ever before”.

Now let’s be clear – no ute with a ladder frame, leaf spring rear suspension and load hauling as its primary reason for existence is going to deliver luxury car levels of quiet-ness, suppleness and relaxation but the new Hilux has defi nitely lifted its game, and in a big way.

Heading off to pick up this week’s Bay Driver the second thing we noticed was the SR5 steers with directness, almost

unknown in this category. Plenty of slack is usually built into the steering of 4x4s, but not in the case of the Hilux’s hydraulically assisted rack-and-pinion set-up. It actu-ally handled better than some sedans we have test-driven, which is surprising given a vehicle of this size – being 5330mm long and weighing 2080kg.

Let’s get wetArriving at Kingfi sher Boats in Mount

Maunganui, our Bay Driver of the week, Kim Bertelsen looked like he was welcom-ing an old friend when we arrived in the ‘subtle’ Inferno Orange SR5 – and we soon found out why. Currently, Kim owns a 2011 Hilux SR5, the main tow vehicle for his boat manufacturing business, while the family car – a brand new Toyota Highlander – has been claimed by wife Delphine.

You could be forgiven for thinking this was a set-up.

First test, towingKim’s latest project, the Kingfi sher

670 centre console weighs in at just over two tonne.

While Kim was channelling his inner supermodel with our pho-tographer I was left to play ‘fi rst mate dogsbody’ and hook up the boat. The Hilux is equipped with the latest technology in reversing cameras and made the backing job overly simple…to the point where I felt like I was cheating.

Sensors guide you directly under the drawbar and it’s all displayed on a sharp 7inch touchscreen.

Later Kim showed me the back of his existing Hilux, and I’d guess this feature could have saved him a grand in panelbeating.

Heading to the boat ramp, Kim comments: “It’s like it’s

not even on there”. Hard to miss a 2 tonne, 6.7 metre King-

fi sher Kim, but I think he was engrossed in the heads-up display.

“It keeps you more conscious of your speed which is important when you are towing.”

I have a moment of panic as I struggle to remember what the road code said about towing speeds. It’s 90km/h for the record.

Pulling up at Sulphur point Kim then noted the stopping ability of the Hilux. “The brakes are nice, very responsive – it’s got a proper handbrake too, that’s ideal for hill starts on the ramp as it gives you proper control.” The steering lock got the thumbs up from Kim too.

Options, options, optionsWhile the new Hilux SR5 Limited Edition

comes with every feature and accessory you would expect and plenty you wouldn’t – see standard features as listed – our test drive vehicle had some tricky stuff added by the workshop team at Pacifi c Toyota that really set this ute apart. This included 20 inch alloy wheels, stainless nudge-bar and sports lid. Because every Hilux is expected to perform a specifi c task, more than 200 individual acces-sory options are available to help tailor your vehicle to your needs.

Inside, the 7 inch central touchscreen provides access to the radio, Bluetooth audio streaming, Toyota Link apps, the reversing camera and SatNav. The satellite navigation with SUNA traffi c channel is also available on SR5 and SR5 Limited models.

Drive in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Wellington or Christchurch and the SUNA channel broadcasts and updates real-time traffi c information to your vehicle.

It’s a pretty smart bit of kit with the ability to recommend alternative routes based on real-time events.

Keyless entry, push-button start and anti-theft alarm are present and correct, as is tilt

and reach adjustment for the multi-function steering wheel, behind which are controls for the auto-levelling LED headlights and adjust-able intermittent wipers. All four electric windows have auto up/down and the audio system’s quality will probably have you look-ing to update the stereo at home.

Plus, there’s oodles of cabin storage includ-ing; large upper and lower gloveboxes, dashboard and centre console cup-holders, generously sized door bins, a large smart-phone space and a big bin beneath the central armrest.

Under the hoodHilux has unveiled impressive gains to per-

formance, fuel economy and quietness with a newly-developed, Prado-proven, turbo-diesel engine. Plus, a petrol option is also available. The 2.8L four-cylinder power plant provides more power and torque – and Toyota also claims greater reliability, which after seeing what Crumpy did to his Hilux and the Top Gear lads did to theirs…is quite the claim.

The Hilux maintains it’s proven towing capability up to 3500kg braked. This latest Hilux also offers a host of dynamic on-road and off-road technologies accompanied by either a six-speed automatic transmission or a Toyota-fi rst six-speed intelligent Manual Transmission (i-MT) system, which supports the driver’s shifting operations where the engine speed is automatically rev-matched, enabling smooth shifting operations.

So all in all, a pretty comfortable and striking looking workhorse, with a massive upgrade option list and nearly 50 years of Hilux history.

And what does our Bay Driver say? “I would happily just keep this one and send them my 2011 model. They might send me a bill though, what do ya reckon?”

Fortune favours the bold Kim, so good luck with that.

Maunganui maybe only a small player, but they’re making a big name

for themselves after claiming the pinnacle of trucking awards.

Truckline Services owner/operator Kelvin Pearson’s business has been running for about 28 years working from the base on Hewletts Rd.

Kelvin’s team picked up the Parts and Services Dealer of the Year award, which he says is like the Rugby World Cup equivalent of the trucking world.

“It’s an award given out by Southpac Trucks who are the Kenworth, DAF dealers for New Zealand. It’s a nationwide award. It’s a bloody important award because it gives you a whole heap of recognition in the industry.

“It shows we are a big player in the industry. We’re not a big player as far as size goes, but as far as actions go [we are]. It’s a big

trophy, it’s like the (Rugby) World Cup.”Kelvin’s company is the authorised parts

and service dealers for Fuso, DAF and Ken-worth trucks in the Bay of Plenty region.

“We have an all-makes parts programme which is called TPR (Trucks Related Parts) which is an all-make parts for trucks and trailer supplies.”

He says the company supplies a vital service for the trucking community. “We have four dedicated guys in our parts department, a sales-rep on the go, who runs from Opotiki up to Whitianga, and a team of 12 service technicians, plus three admin staff.” Receiv-ing the award was an entire team effort Kelvin says. “We have a great bunch of guys working here and this award wouldn’t have happen without them.”

Bay of Plenty rider Tony Rees isn’t a man to be trifled with if his reputation is anything to go by – especially if you asked him how many street battles he’s won. His

reply would be nine.Tony, who is from Whakatane, picked up

his latest title at the weekend in the annual Honda Battle of the Streets event at Paeroa.

He first won the premier title more than 20 years ago, and, at age 46, celebrated his eighth big win when he clinched the trophy at the 23rd annual running of the iconic event in 2014.

The event skipped a beat last year when persistent rain forced organisers to abandon the day, the first time in the history of the event.

But now, at age 48, the Honda star has made it to win number nine, the most wins by any one rider at the popular annual event.

To add icing to the cake, Tony broke the lap record for Paeroa, racing around the fabled hacksaw-shaped circuit in a time of 44.427 seconds.

Under brilliant blue skies, Tony took his Honda CBR1000RR to win the first of two Formula One races on Sunday; then he backed it up with a start-to-finish win in the 10-lap King of the Streets feature race as well, making it an historic ninth time that he has won the Honda-sponsored event’s signature race.

He came unstuck in the second of two For-mula One races, forced to withdraw when arm cramps became too difficult and painful to bear, thus handing the outright class win instead to Taupo’s Scotty Moir, who man-aged a 3-1 score-card, but Tony was still the

hero of the day in winning the all-important feature race.

“I was getting cramp in my hands before the start of the second Formula One race,” says Tony.

“My hands simply locked up. I didn’t get a great night’s sleep last night and maybe my diet hasn’t been the best, contributing to the cramps, but hats off to Scotty (Moir), who rode brilliantly.

“I nearly crashed three times in that second F1 race and, in the end, I decided it wasn’t worth dying for.

“I’ve never had that happen before. The bike would have won today, but the rider couldn’t,” he shrugged.

“It would have been nice to get three wins from three starts, but I’ll settle for two and one of those wins being in the feature race was good too,” says Tony.

“I think I had the measure of Scotty and my lap time of 44.5 seconds was the fastest I’ve ever been around here.”

Tony now looks ahead to the fourth and final round of the New Zealand Superbike Championships, at Hampton Downs, near Meremere, on March 5-6.

Other class winners at Paeroa on Sunday were Wainuiomata’s Shane Richardson (Formula Two); Auckland’s Gavin Velt-meyer (Formula Three); Taupo’s Scott Moir (Supermotard); Auckland’s Mark Wigley (Pre-89 Post Classics); Auckland’s Mark Robinson (Pre-82 Post Classics); Sanson’s Mark Perry (Bears, non-Japanese bikes); Auckland’s Mark Halls (Senior Classics); Auckland’s Brendon Honey (Junior Clas-sics); Auckland’s Adam Unsworth and Stu Dawes (Sidecar); Pahiatua’s John Blaymires and Charles Hill (Post Classic Sidecars).

Ford fans are invited to show off their beloved engines at the long-running All Ford Day at Mount Maunganui

next month.

Hosted by the Ford Muscle Car Club, the annual All Ford Day at Blake Park on Sunday, March 6, is a highlight for Ford owners, with this year’s event raising funds for Child Cancer Foundation Tauranga.

Ford Muscle Car Club vice-president Gus Old says the day brings together members of Ford clubs from throughout the Bay of Plenty and Waikato, including the Waikato Mustang Club and Whakatane Ford Falcon Club.

“It’s a chance for club members to display their cars, share them with the public and possibly win prizes. There are eight classes of competition on the day, with trophies for each

winner. We also have, thanks to our sponsors, spot prizes too.”

Judging is based on exterior and interior, engine and cleanliness of the vehicles, with a People’s Choice Award also awarded to the crowd favourite.

Gus is expecting between 350-400 Ford vehicles of all makes and models to park up for the event, and he is crossing his fingers for fine weather.

“There’ll be everything from Model Ts right through to the latest Ford Falcons or 2015 Mustangs. It’s going to be a fun day for Ford owners.”

Along with many Ford-related activities, there will be plenty of children’s activities, including a free bouncy castle.

The All Ford Day at Blake Park on Sunday, March 6, opens 10am-3pm. Entry is $5 for adults, under 14s free. Zoe Hunter
