I’m embarrassed to say it, but during my career in the motoring industry I’ve never really paid

Peugeot much attention. I knew it was a French car manufacturer but I always thought of it as the

poor relative of its German cousins. Therefore, it came as surprise when I started researching

the brand for writing this review and found Peugeot has one of the most impressive motor sport records in the world.

For example, a Peugeot Sport has won the World Rally Championship fi ve times, the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup twice, the World Endurance Champion-ship twice, and the Intercontinental Rally Challenge Championship three times.

Off the race track Peugeot has plenty to be proud of too. In 2014 the Peugeot 308 won the prestig-ious recognition of European Car of the Year, it was also awarded the NZ Autocar Car of the Year in 2014 as well as Most Beautiful Interior of the Year at the 29th International Automobile Festival. And to top it all off, the Peugeot 308’s

new Puretech engine recently won the coveted International Engine of the Year award, the end result of four million kilo-metres of test driving and 15,000 hours of endurance testing.

More than just a pretty faceSo when I arrived at Tauranga Peugeot on Cameron Rd

on Friday to pick up the new Peugeot 308 GTi, I had rather high expectations – and I wasn’t disappointed. I was greeted

by dealer principal John Hayes, who handed me the keys to one of the most impressive looking

four-door hatchbacks I’ve ever seen. John says the new Peugeot 308 GTi is much more than just a badge and alloy wheels. “The 308 GTi has been extensively devel-oped by Peugeot Sport, who are Peugeot’s

in-house motorsport division who have a wealth of expertise developing high-perfor-

mance road and race cars. “The letters ‘GTi’ only ever feature on Peugeot products

with the highest performance.” Okay John, I’m now offi cially excited!

European elegance, French passionGetting inside the 308 GTi to meet this week’s Bay Driver,

Kaye Josephs, who is fi nancial controller for Tyre Works, I was greeted with one of the most beautifully crafted cabins I’ve ever seen –and it felt for want of a better term ‘very European’. The minimalist theme uses a large 9.7-inch touchscreen for everything ordinarily controlled by an array of switches and really de-clutters the centre console; and the detail in the fi nishing of the doors, dash and seats was really quite breathtaking. This really was something quite special.

When I collected Kaye from the Hewletts Rd branch of Tyre Works, her fi rst comment was: “Lucky I can drive a manual, but it’s been a while, this will be fun”.

The 308 GTi by Peugeot Sport offers drivers a performance tuned 1.6L turbo S&S engine, producing 270hp (200 kW) coupled with a six-speed manual gearbox. “I haven’t driven a car with six gears before,” said Kaye. I was quietly hoping she wouldn’t need them all either, as we headed for the new Tauranga Eastern Link. As we shot past, Bayfair Kaye said: “I spoke to a customer this morning who said these things go like a rocket”. Who is this woman and what have you done with Kaye?

Kaye had previously told me she drives a Toyota Prado, as a keen paddle boarder she uses it to transport her boards back-wards and forwards to the beach. However, it quickly became apparent to me that her transition from paddle boarder to a

performance sports car driver was all but complete.“Does it have cruise control?” Kaye asked, as we hit the

TEL. “Yes it’s just there,” I said, pointing out the discreet controls just below the indicator controller. “It needs it,” she said. “Otherwise I would be getting some serious speeding tickets.” Oh dear!

The big red fun buttonThe next thing Kaye notices is the Sport mode button

on the centre console, which allows the driver to amp up the high-octane feel – like she needed that! Pressing the Sport button switches the display colour from white to red, shows additional information on the central readout – on power, torque, turbo boost pressure, lateral and longitudinal acceleration – enhances engine growl, changes the accelera-tor pedal mapping and provides fi rmer and more responsive power steering.

This is no gimmick, it seriously changes the entire per-sonality of the car and in this case, its driver. The car is outrageously fast, with a top speed electronically capped at 250km/h. It handles like it’s on rails, thanks to a low 1205kg kerb weight, and is capable of accelerating to 100km/h in six seconds.

Thankfully, the car also has everything it needs to rein in all that power, with 380mm ventilated discs in the front mounted on aluminium hubs featuring four pistons in a fi xed caliper. The rear discs have a diameter of 268mm.

Rubber meets the roadAfter pulling over for our photo shoot and to let my heart

rate settle, I notice Kaye is checking out the tyres. After 10 years with Tyre Works, Kaye is a bit of an expert in this area. “Are they any good?” I ask her. Kaye points out the 308 GTi comes with Michelin Super Sport 3s, another product of France.

“They are seriously good tyres and they are 19s too so they are really nice and wide.” She also tells me they are manu-factured for total performance, safety, durability and fuel effi ciency. A high performance tyre specially designed for super sports cars with ultra-high performance tuning. “Some say they are best tyres in the world but don’t quote me on that.” Sorry Kaye I just did.

The next thing, Kaye is stepping out the length of the car. “You are measuring it out for your paddle board aren’t you Kaye?” “I am actually,” she says, even noting the pre-drilled holes in the door sills for a genuine Peugeot roof rack. I think Tauranga Peugeot just found its next customer.
