Firstly, an apology. To all the people in Tauranga who are now suffering a neck injury due to double-taking as

the Volvo V40 drove past, I apologise. Actually no, I’m not

sorry, it’s a stunning car and you loved it too.

As you might have guessed by now, Volvo’s V40 Cross Country is one hell of a looker. Sleek, stylish, sporty – not words that usually spring to mind where Volvos are concerned!

Okay, so I was a little concerned when told I would be taking the wheel of one of Volvo’s ‘Cross Country’ editions.

Previous incarnations usually came in the all-wheel-drive wagon model with two-tone paint and chunky body trim; often the preserve of the tweed jacket-clad plastic surgeon, supermodel wife, and the two children called Tofty and Squiff.

Don’t get me wrong, not at all a bad car, but certainly country estate motoring at it’s fi nest. But this, wow, this should be called the ‘tear-your-face-off-gorgeous’ model.

Sleek stylingOur test version was a sleek black

T5 AWD, with it’s 2.5l turbo charged engine and six-speed transmission. The only other vari-ant being the D4 Diesel, which comes with a 2.0 litre turbodiesel engine.

Internally, it’s very hard to fault. As soon as you open the door, you’re greeted with sumptuous leather seats and the overwhelming sense of quality.

The dashboard has an unusual grain effect, unlike anything I’ve seen, and it’s just so nice.

Everything is laid out well, the console even has themes so you can change how you want your dials to look – normal speedometer

to sporty rev counter with digital speed readout, all digitally produced.

I did wonder whether this car was designed in collaboration with Time Lords though, for a not-that-big car, the space inside is incredible.

It’s comfy, safe and really something spe-cial. The in-car smarts are also impressive, built-in web browser, Spotify player and iGo navigation system that can take you to places you search for in Google!

There’s also a myriad of options for those that want to intimately tune their Volvo experience.

Amongst all of this, the only quirk I could fi nd was the handbrake. Volvo’s natural habitat is on the wrong side of the road, they are normally left-hand drive. In this Volvo the handbrake is still on the left in the right-hand drive version. It’s not at all an issue at all, just quirky!

Perfect balanceOut on the road, quality is still ever pre-

sent. It’s quiet, powerful, smooth and glides along like road royalty. The handling is responsive, crisp and yet somehow gentile. You can corner at pace, but Volvo engineers have made it feel like a gentle run in the countryside.

For all its sportiness, there’s nothing harsh about this car at all – a balance that escapes many cars of this genre.

The 2.5 litre turbo-charged engine deliv-ers its power smoothly too. You can feel the kick of the power, but it’s a gravitational

effect, rather than a punch in the face.No doubt the all-wheel-drive helps greatly

in this respect, getting all 187kw to the fl oor with ease.

Setting a standardThe standard features of this model are

incredible, far too many to list here, but you will certainly not be disappointed.

All the mod-cons are in there, so you don’t have to pour over pages of optional extras to get the toys you want.

In fact, the main optional extra is called the Driver Support Pack. This adds so many extra safety features you could prob-ably hand the keys to your Labrador, and she’d drive it with ease.

After that, it’s pretty much down to the choice of leather of textile trim, and what colour paint you want.

The Volvo V40 Cross Country only comes in Luxury spec, and is available from $62,990 for the diesel or $66,990 for the petrol.

If you want a little less, maybe you don’t want the all-wheel-drive and could lose a few luxuries, you could opt for a stand-ard V40 which has prices starting from $47,990, up to $64,990 for the R-Design spec.

Don’t go past the Cross Country until you’ve tried it though, it’s a superb machine. The folks at Duncan and Ebbett will be more than happy to go through the options with you, for your ideal Volvo experience.
