The annual GOOD DESIGNTM Award ranks as the most celebrated international accolade in the fi eld of product design and, this year, once again it honours the outstanding quality of BMW Group Design.

No fewer than six BMW Group models have received the prestigious 2011 GOOD DESIGNTM Award: The BMW 6 Series Convertible, the BMW 6 Series Coupe, the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, the BMW ActiveE and the two motorcycle models, BMW K 1600 GT/GTL and the BMW G650 GS.

The world’s oldest and most esteemed design prize was founded in 1950 in Chi-cago. For more than 60 years now, this coveted accolade has recognised exceptionally innovative and visionary products, concepts and ideas that go beyond the regular horizons of everyday product design.

The aim of the award, not least of all, is to raise public awareness of contemporary design, together with related issues of sustainability.

The prize is awarded based on the criteria of functionality and aesthetics and is now complemented by an ecological aspect that stipulates sustainable design in keeping with our times.

The new BMW 6 Series Convertible won its award with powerfully contoured sur-faces, a stretched bonnet, set-back passenger compartment, long wheelbase and fl at waistline with a classic soft-top roof featuring a distinctive ‘fi n’ design.

The new BMW 6 Series Coupe, with its mix of dynamic athleticism and exclusive travel comfort, also scored highly. Adaptive LED headlights represent an innovation in lighting technology and draw on the

hallmark round headlight look in a new ren-dition of BMW’s iconic design cues.

Another winner, the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, cuts a compelling fi gure with its athletic demeanour and M-specifi c interior design. The optimised track width of the front and rear axles, an expansive front apron and powerfully fl ared wheel arches lend the BMW 1 Series M Coupe its unmistakable character. The two sets of chrome-plated twin tailpipes, situated at the outer edges of the rear, make for the symmetrical look familiar from M styling.

With the BMW ActiveE, an all-electric-drive BMW 1 Series Coupe, BMW is testing everyday usage of electric vehicles, which will lead to the series development of the BMW i3. This electric car offers four full seats, boot space of about 200 litres, rear-wheel drive and a range of approximately 160 kilometres (100 miles) in day-to-day operation.

With its BMW K 1600 GT and BMW K 1600 GTL, BMW Motorrad is tapping into a new dimension of the touring experience. Both these motorcycles present a self-assured, imposing and distinctive appearance, spark-ing off a hefty dose of wanderlust at fi rst glance. The BMW G 650 GS has a charac-teristic enduro design and colour concept, fully in keeping with the BMW GS family style and round off the bike’s overall sporty impression. The quality and specifi cation of this model, coupled with its long-distance comfort, set it apart from the competitors.

The Range Rover Evoque Dynamic cuts a unique profi le on the road –something aspired

to, but not often achieved, with many SUVs.

The unique exterior profi le ensures the Evoque is one heck of a ‘head-turner’.

With its 4WD all-terrain system, the Evoque is not limited to urban cruising.

The interior is beautifully crafted, including double-stitched leather seats and quality surfaces with

burnished aluminium highlights.

Rarely today do you come across a vehicle design that genuinely makes people do

a double-take as it passes by.But when Bay Driver took this unique new car for a road

test last week, we noted multiple head-twisting double takes at the Evoque – and that was just during one stop at a Te Puna intersection. We would estimate that 70 per cent of passing holiday motorists braved the safety of their loved ones to snap their heads back for a second look at its magnifi -cent profi le.

Every year at international motor shows we see images and maybe even mock-ups of concept cars looking just that much more futuristic, aerodynamic and unreal than the cars we drive today.

Often they are never seen again. The dreamy wheels are shoved away and put in a dark drawer by the car manufac-turer, no doubt to the lingering dismay of the eager young designer that came up with it and the disappointment of potential customers. Not so with the new Range Rover Evoque. It has the appear-ance of a concept car that has been lifted straight off the CAD screen of the designer, made into a prototype and then put straight into production.

Truly uniqueWe know that the roads are full of SUVs trying to obtain

a lower, more aerodynamic profi le. Most are simply sedans jacked up on fancier suspension, while keeping the same engine and essential features of their sedan siblings.

The Evoque, however, is truly unique. It may share the

prestige of the Range Rover badge across the front, but this is not simply a scaled-down Rover. While it has the build qual-ity, inherent solidness and multitude of features as its bigger cousin, the Evoque deliberately cuts a far more ‘wedgy’, aerodynamic slice through the air. Its shoulder high profi le is accentuated by a roof that slides down distinctively towards the rear and manages to do so without any real loss of head space for taller back seat passengers.

Meanwhile, its squat, muscular stance is aided by massive 19 inch wheels sitting in big arches. On the black fi ve-door test model, with its back windows darkly tinted, it looked positively mean and desirable. The tyre/colour/profi le com-bination certainly gave it a “don’t mess with me” look – one that meant it could not be dismissed as a ‘toy for rich ladies’ and ensured space and respect on the road.

Sumptuous insideThose defi nitive looks outside are complimented by a very

classy interior. Ease yourself behind the wheel and you feel you have entered the world of a rich mate who has invested in a smart, modern apartment. It is cosseted in burnished alumin-ium trim, rich leather seats and soft touch surfaces that make it a delight to be in. Inset within these luxury materials is some smart, but more importantly, easy to use technology.

The centre touch screen highlights how easy the Evoque is to operate. There was no agonising, poring over a thick manual to try and understand how it all works. Simply plug in your iPod and everything makes complete sense.

The Meridian sound system is probably reason enough alone to want an Evoque! The 11 speaker system produces 820W of sound and includes a pumping sub-woofer. The quality will

ensure you don’t really want to get out of the cabin, even if you have arrived at where you need to be. It is simply the most stunning stereo system, appreciated even more by how easy it is to operate.

Other technology is as simply operated, including pairing up your phone to Bluetooth, while selecting gears is simply a click of the centre dial that smoothly rises up from its rest posi-tion when you push ‘Start’. The driver’s seat includes memory position and in double-stitched leather, it is as luxurious as it is supportive.

A drive to rememberOn the road, the wide assertive stance and low profi le of the

Evoque is appreciated. It offers a very positive driving experience, with none of the

waver so common with some high profi le SUVs. There is a sporty attitude to the handling that keeps it well connected to the road surface, obviously helped by the four wheel drive system and a smart suspension system.

The Range Rover reputation for off-road capabilities carries through to the Evoque. It is equipped with an easy-to-use selector that takes you from a ‘General Driving’ mode, through a ‘Gravel/Snow’ option and on to ‘Sand’ mode. This ensures that you can tailor your transmission, braking and traction perfectly to the terrain you are travelling through.

The Evoque is selling wildly overseas, no doubt spurred on by many awards. These include Top Gear’s 2011 Car of the Year, where the ever-irascible Jeremy Clarkson noted that his fears of this Range Rover being akin to a “Faberge Egg made from plastic” were not fulfi lled. He judged it as brilliant – and who are we to argue with the grumpy old man of motoring.

Ford describes its new 2.0 litre Ecoboost engine for the Falcon

range as a ‘sweet spot’.The four cylinder turbo-charged petrol

engine is a first in 50 years of production and will be installed into the rear-drive Ford Falcon XT model from May this year. Falcon EcoBoost offers greater fuel efficiency and performance than ever before, starting at just 8.1L/100kms.

Despite achieving such an impressive new fuel efficiency target, the Falcon EcoBoost engine will also continue to provide drivers with the performance they love in a large car by using direct injection and turbocharging to deliver more power and performance from a lower displacement powerplant.

Official power and torque figures return 179kW at 5500 rpm and 353Nm at 2000 rpm, showcasing the outstanding perform-ance-feel drivers will enjoy. These new petrol engines use much of the same technology that is found in today’s state-of-the-art turbo diesels, however, EcoBoost accomplishes this

at less cost than a similar-displacement diesel engine.

EcoBoost engines are already on sale in a number of Ford vehicles around the world and by 2013 will be available in 80 per cent of the company’s global nameplates. They are available on Falcon XT models in New Zealand from May and there are also plans for the new Ford Kuga and Ford Mondeo models, due for release later in 2012, to be equipped with Ecoboost technology.

With more than 125 patents and patent applications on its EcoBoost technology, Ford’s global EcoBoost engine family is the cornerstone of its near-term sustainability plan to deliver high-volume, affordable, fuel-efficient vehicles that customers both want and value.

“Our goal has been to find the sweet spot for consumers – to give them the fuel effi-ciency they need, combined with the power they want, says Ford Australia president and chief executive Bob Graziano.

“Ford’s global EcoBoost technology does just that.”

For more than 20 years, the annual Battle of the Streets

motorcycle race has seen fast-paced actions on the streets of Paeroa.

Held annually on the third whole weekend of February, riders from around the country and overseas descend on the small town to race for the top prizes of $500.Te Puke-based, Bayride Motorcycles Ducati rider Damian Mackie, is one of the riders participating in the event. Damian, 37, is riding for the third year on a Ducati 1198S and a Suzuki RG 500. Damian says the ‘Battle’ really appeals to him as it is a lot of fun and one of the last street races left.“There is always a decent amount of people around and it is good, close racing on the streets.”Damian is also one of the coaches for the California Super Bike School in Auckland. During the last few days he has been working with the students on their riding for the event, so he feels well prepared for his own race. The event began in 1991 when a group of friends and motorcycle enthusiasts turned the streets of Paeroa into a circuit. After 15 months of planning, they held their fi rst meeting in 1992, running on a 1.52km circuit through the main streets – now known as the ‘Hacksaw’ due to its shape. The circuit has provided a test to riders

reaching speeds of 280km/h and sidecars close to 220km/h along the main straight. The event typically attracts between 13,000 to 15,000 spectators and 350 volunteers and is now televised every year. There are 11 classes that run throughout the day, including: Post Classics – Forgotten Era Pre 1982, Formula 2, Junior Classics, Senior Classics, Formula 3, For-mula Paeroa, Sidecars, Post Classic Historic Pre 1972, BEARS, Super Motard and the Robert Holden Memorial Race. The event is the larg-est sporting occasion in the Thames Valley and one of the largest motor sport meet-ings in New Zealand. It receives excellent support from sponsors in both cash and kind, with Mobil 1 becoming the new major sponsor since 2011. The event always gives back to the com-munity, with $500,000 going back to community groups in the last 20 years. For more information visit www.battleofthestreets.co.nz
