Changes to family size or business activities that demand un-cramped, multiple seating options in a vehicle

can pose the odd dilemma. Chrysler’s new Grand Voyager, however, will

comfortably and safely solve all ‘people transportation’ problems.

When faced with sudden expansion to the family, for example having twins, plans get sideswiped and instantly space everywhere is at a premium for the impending arrival of the extra family members. It is easy enough to juggle space at home and a bit of DIY will soon turn the most unappealing spare room into a welcoming nursery.

Not so easily done for wheels, however,

at least not safely and legally, leaving the dilemma of what to buy for your growing and precious cargo. A multi-seat wagon or coach is an obvious option, but the added demand of equipping the family with a people mover to replace the trusty sedan could have most parents feeling slightly queasy. Have no fear though because the Grand Voyager, put through its paces by Bay Driver this week, is a vehicle that will bury all misconceptions of what a people mover should be.

Comfort and space for allOutwardly, the designers have given the

Voyager a more defi ned, stronger look and one that defi es you to believe just how much space is contained within the cabin. But when you fl ick open the electrically operated sliding door, a vista of space literally opens up before you.

The fi rst thing you notice is the completely fl at fl oor, which makes access a breeze. We also applaud the two armchair-like seats in

the ‘mid-ships’ position being separated, allowing easy access to the comfy rear bench seat. This runs contra to what most seven seat designs accommodate, where a bench seat will swallow the width and a couple of (usually) smaller seats in the back make up the complement of seven.

There is also easy access to the cleverly hidden stor-age bins that sit within the fl oor in front of the two middle seats. Like so many of the Voyager’s features, they are the sort of thing

you will spend time being pleasantly surprised about as you discover them. In fact, thoughtful, practical design reigns throughout the passenger cabin, from the bins to the rechargeable LED torch tucked in the rear, the multiple power outlets and fold down activity trays to name just a few.

Perhaps the smartest feature within the Voy-ager’s long list is the ‘Stow and Go’ electric folding seat system. At the push of a button, the rearmost seats can be folded up and

magically transform the whole space into a cavernous storage area. Fold the mid seats up as well and in seconds, you have transformed the Voyager from luxury cruiser into a mas-sive 3000 litres of wheeled space.

The seating fl exibility of the Voyager is enormous with at least nine confi gurations. The ability to turn the seats around means stopping for a picnic, regardless of the weather, is a big improvement on negotiat-ing the steering wheel and balancing lunch on your knee. That rainy day picnic is all the more appealing thanks to dual DVD screens that drop down, aircraft style, in the cabin.

Entertaining technologyIn addition to the DVD player, the ability

to store up to 30GB of music and video that you can rip from your own collection, helps keep the cabin uncluttered. So throw the discs back in the house and let the tech-nology catalogue it and keep it all within easy reach on the touch screen information

management console. It is also possible to run a video game through the rear screen, while the front screen plays a DVD, keep-ing all parties happy. The front information screen incorporates a reversing camera too, so you don’t risk leaving one of your valuable passengers behind or worse.

It seems Chrysler designers have taken many of their cues from aircraft cabin design in laying out the Voyager for maximum passenger comfort. There are above head air conditioning vents with separate air condi-tioning controls for the rear zone, pin point LED lighting, multiple cup holders and

ample adjustment to maximise leg room. With the very rear seats being so comfort-able, it is easy to envisage the application of the Voyager as a vehicle of choice for lodge owners or top end shuttle services.

Handles like a dreamUp front, the attention to specifi cation is

no less. The driving position is nicely placed and despite the Voyager’s size, you feel more like you are behind the wheel of a sedan. For

its size, the Voyager’s handling is surprisingly well sorted. You are hardly going to revisit your racing youth (the tribe in the back is reason enough for that), but the Voyager delivers a soft, forgiving ride, without any

sense of wallow that would leave your passengers turn-ing green.

The 2.8 litre turbo-diesel is a good power plant to have in a vehicle designed for taking a reasonable load of both people and gear and it does not disappoint. The six speed transmission provides plenty of range for it to adjust to the demands placed on it and is an ideal match. The diesel offers plenty of low-down pull, is refi ned even under power and will deliver

economy that will keep something in the household budget for groceries.

For anyone looking to maximise their investment in a people mover for the long-term, the Voyager certainly delivers. It also delivers on the promise to bring more com-fort than you would have ever had thought possible in this vehicle category, with plenty of nifty design features that will keep all on board safe, entertained and happy.

The ‘Best of the Best’ of these earn the title of Master Technician and Volkswagen New Zealand recently held an award ceremony in Auckland to celebrate the completion of their fi rst ever Master Technician training course in the Asia Pacifi c region.

Only seven technicians in New Zealand qualifi ed for this prestigious award and among them was Darren Peattie, Volkswagen service team leader at Farmer Autovillage in Hewletts Road, Mount Maunganui. Service manager Bevan Sheppard is under-standably proud to count one of these talented young men among his experienced team in the service department.

“To achieve this status, Darren had to com-plete six specialised training courses plus pass a series of tough practical and theory exams over an 18 month period,” says Bevan. “Only seven of the 70 VW technicians in the country were selected to complete the full training course and qualify as Master Technicians.”

More good news for the Farmer Autovillage service team comes with another technician,

Blair Brookbanks, being announced as the MTA Tauranga ‘Technician of the Year’ for 2011 at the awards dinner on Saturday night.

“Having two technicians achieve at these levels is just the tip of the iceberg.

“Every one of our guys knows and under-stands their specialist car brand very well, which means that, no matter what make and model of car a customer owns, when they bring it in here for a repair or service, we will produce a better result for them, every time.”

Bevan points out that this can actually trans-late into cost savings for mechanical repairs as well. By using the latest diagnostic technology, the service team can quickly assess the prob-lem, identify and order the parts from their global network and then carry out the repairs in the minimum amount of time.

After participating in a few charity rides, motorbike enthusiast

Karl Downes decided to host his own for a worthy cause.

The long-time Harley Davidson rider learnt about baby Sativa Eagle from his neighbour, who happened to be her grandparents. Sativa is the youngest patient diagnosed with a rare form of leukaemia: Acute Lymphob-lastic Leukaemia. She has to endure weekly chemotherapy, with her parents Tim and Sheree taking her back and forth to Starship Hospital in Auckland.

Touched by Sativa’s condition and the fi nancial situation of the family, Karl is

organising a charity motorbike ride around the Rotorua Lakes on December 10. He says the response has been fast and steady, attract-ing more than 130 bikes and creating a convoy so big the Tauranga City Council has had to get involved in traffi c management, something he didn’t expect.

The $20 entry fee goes directly to Sativa, as well as the $20 for riding pillion. There will also be church groups with donation buckets and spot prizes to give away at Mount Surf Club from 1pm including a $3000 Fujitsu New Zealand heat pump.

Sativa’s father Tim says the feedback has been overwhelming and is exactly what they needed.

“We are currently collecting for a new car to get back and forward to Auckland on a constant basis.

“From the Facebook Page alone, we received over $3000 donated from the community. “We will use the money to start catching up on bills too so we don’t have to worry as much about money for the next six months.”

Tim says Sativa has just returned from a week of intensive chemotherapy eight hours a day, but is heading into a two week break before going back again. Tim’s main hope is for Sativa to spend some of Christmas at home and out of hospital.
