First impressions were a ritzy fi ve-seater set off by a stylish rear spoiler, 18 inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with automatic

levelling and rain sensing windscreen wipers were just the start.

A genuine bonus is the high tech, highly elastic resin that actu-ally allows the paint to “heal” itself of very fi ne scratches.

Stepping into the driver seat is a real delight.

Cleverly designed theatre-style seating, with the driver given the

comfort of a heated and powered eight-way seat, makes the challenges of around town or open road driving a breeze.

A multi tilt and adjust steering column greatly assists driver comfort.

Sid, were the Advanced Driver Assist Display and Nissan Connect that includes a satellite navigation system.

The ADAD is a fi ve inch full colour display that sits slap bang in front of the driver between the speedometer and tachometer.

From turn by turn instructions relayed from the Satellite Naviga-tion unit, to phone caller ID, there is a myriad of help available right in the driver’s line of sight.

Nissan Connect is smart tech-nology that keeps your world within reach when you’re on the move.

The Nissan Navigation System comes with a seven inch touch screen that has the latest maps, the most direct

routes and smartest way to get you to your destination. There are all the expected extras of today, in bluetooth, steering wheel auto controls, CD player and AM/FM radio pow-ered through six speakers.

On and off the roadOut on the road, the 2.5 litre petrol engine

gives an impressive 126W of power, 226Nm of torque and a 1500kg towing capacity.

For recreational seekers, a real plus is the 4WD that can be thrown into duty on off road trails or pulling a trailer or boat over diffi cult terrain.

When members of Tauranga’s Street Machines and Customs club

celebrated their 25th anniversary 13 years ago they had such a great time

they made it an annual event.

This Saturday is the club’s 37th anniver-sary bash which is being held at Greerton for the fi rst time in conjunction with the Cherry Blossom Festival, moving on from the club’s traditional anniversary bash site at Mount Maunganui’s Soper Reserve.

Among those in the eclectic club, which was originally set up to cater to car lovers and street rodders who were not eligible to join the groups for the main marques, is

Dodge enthusiast and club president Tim Wood.

After serving his mechanic apprentice-ship working on Chryslers and Holdens for Todd Motors – “I had Valiants all my life” – Todd was attracted to his fi rst Dodge in the 1980s, a 1961 Pioneer,when he was looking for something a little different.

“The Dodges of my era – the early 60s – had a pretty good name for drag racing. They were the most successful non-factory-made dragsters of the period,” says Tim, alluding to part of the brand’s appeal.

Like most in the club, one classic car was not enough – “I think more members would have at least two or more rather than just one” – and has seen his collection

grow with time. Along with a range of cars he’s restored over the years - “I’ve got a ‘63 Dodge which is a work in progress” – he is proudest of the 1965 Dodge Coronet 500 Hard Top he brought back from the US 15 years ago.

After the seller jacked the price up at the last minute on the car he was about to buy, it looked like Tim would return from his US trip empty-handed. But shortly after returning home a friend called him about the Coronet being sold from the estate of the original owner at a price that wasn’t going to last.

“The owner was really particular about the car so it was in great condition. I didn’t need to do anything at all.”

As a model that was produced in smaller

numbers and never had mass appeal it ironi-cally means they have become more unusual and collectible over time. “When we got the Coronet it was one of the fi rst in New Zea-land but now there are about six or seven.”

The Coronet will join cars from around the Bay and the wider North Island that are parking up along Chadwick Road between Cameron and Greerton roads, where they will be displayed from 10am. Numbers are limited to about 120 due to restricted space and he encourages those wanting to take part to pre-register or they can do so on the day from 9am. Details: 027 4534003 or [email protected]

Mount motor racer Ryan MacArtney is aiming to ruffl e a few feathers when he returns

to the track at Hampton Downs for the Honda Cup this weekend.

“I just can’t wait. The car’s certainly got lots of power so it’s going to be great,” says Ryan, who has replaced his Honda Civic’s troubled 120kW engine, which let him down last year, with a 177kW engine offering almost 50 per cent more power.

Ryan, who’ll be competing in his third season, is deter-mined work he’s put into his car during the last four months will help avoid problems that derailed hopes of a top-three fi nish in the 1800cc class last season.

“The only thing that let me down was the car was really down on power. When we fi nished the season I pulled the engine apart and it was pretty shot, so I was really lucky to do as well as I had.”

After jostling near the top of the class, his hopes of fi nishing on the podium faded when a disappointing performance at the fi nal round in Hampton Downs saw him tumble from third to fi fth overall.

The 1996 Civic’s replacement engine allows him to step up into the 2000cc class, where he’s expecting the competition will be even more threatening.

“It’s going really well. There are still a few things to work on, but it feels great,” says Ryan, who tested out the Civic in a drive around the Taupo track last month.

“I can’t wait to get it out there and race it now. I think it will go well for the season.”

Looking back at last season Ryan says the biggest lesson is just how focused he needs to be to get the best results.

“There is so much going on. You’re tearing around the track and there are two drivers just 30cm either side of you. You need to be completely on top of your game to keep your edge.”

With this in mind Ryan’s put a big focus into improv-ing his fi tness and diet, and is already noticing a signifi cant

improvement in stamina and concentration during a full-day meeting.

“It really seems to have paid off, so I’m defi nitely continu-ing that,” says Ryan, who admits his view on Honda’s cars has changed considerably since being advised racing the Honda Cup track was a great way to cut his teeth for the lowest cost.

“The Hondas defi nitely go as good as anything else,” says Ryan.

“A lot of people give them stick on the street, but take them to a race track and they’ll give them a less or two,” says Ryan, who argues the sheer number of Hondas racing compared to other Japanese makes speaks for itself.

The mechanic is also keen to attract more sponsorship to accompany support from his family business, Fulton Auto-motive.

Joining him in the 2000cc class in the Honda Cup’s seven-

round season is fellow Tauranga driver Rik Wakelin, who has also gone up from the 1800cc class where he had a patchy season after missing some rounds last year.

“It will be interesting to see how he goes this year, because he’s quite fast and he’s done quite well previously,” says Ryan. “He did well in the previous season; and karting when he was younger.”

But Ryan’s eyes are set on winning the 2000cc class, in what he hopes will be a stepping stone towards his ultimate goal of driving in V8 supercars.

“That’s always the dream, but of course money is always the issue,” says Ryan, who encourages anyone interested in sponsorship to email him at [email protected]
