Market UpdateI am delighted to provide you with the Greythorn Job

Seeker Market Report 2016-2017. This report collates

the views of over 2500 IT professionals who responded to our

annual IT market survey. I am confident the trends

and conclusions included in our report will be valuable to

hiring organisations looking to navigate the IT market, as well

as job seekers who want to be empowered with relevant

data about their field of specialisation.

Growth and talent shortages are the key themes for the

Australian IT market in 2016/17. Driven by the plethora of

digital, mobile, ERP and security projects that kicked off in

2015 there has been a significant increase in demand for

skills across these areas. In addition to this, many private

sector organisations are restructuring and moving to Public

Cloud environments, and in doing so, undertaking large

IT transformation programs that affect all areas of their

businesses.

The coming months will see demand for candidates

continue, with 47% of survey respondents expecting

their teams to increase in size in the next 12 months. In

particular, Greythorn has seen an increased demand in for

those skilled in mobile first responsive web development,

cyber security, customer experience, digital strategy, Cloud,

Big Data and data analytics, along with a surge in requests

for those with Agile experience.

Top in-demand roles for 2016/17 will include:

1. Business Analysts

2. Project Managers

3. Responsive/Mobile Web Developers

4. Security Consultants

5. Data Analytics & BI Specialists

6. DevOps

7. Mobility Specialists

8. Cloud Specialists

Economic optimism remains at similar levels to 2015

with commerce (private sector) being the most optimistic

industry. In line with this job security remains at similarly

high levels. The government sector is slightly more secure

than in 2015, when 37% of those surveyed felt insecure.

The majority of job seekers are ‘fairly or very satisfied’ in

their roles this year (70%), however this figure is lower than

in 2015 when 89% of those surveyed were fairly or very

satisfied in their roles. Interestingly, job seekers are no less

likely to recommend their employer to a friend this year in

spite of lowered job satisfaction.

Rates and remuneration are set to remain stable, with the

majority of job seekers anticipating no change. Sectors

where there is significant predicted growth such as digital,

mobile and analytics can expect to see increases in rates

and salaries as employers are forced to compete in a

candidate driven market.

Over the past 2 years there has been an increasing trend

towards candidates becoming passive job seekers;

keeping an eye on the market, but waiting for the right role

to find them rather than actively job hunting. This trend

and current talent shortages mean having a well-defined

candidate attraction strategy in place is more important

than ever. This year job seekers have cited career

development, remuneration and projects and technologies

as the most attractive factors when considering a new

role. Interestingly, in 2015 remuneration was the top

concern, followed by projects and technologies and culture.

Creating awareness of the benefits and opportunities

offered by your organisation when speaking with recruitment

partners, when advertising, on social media and in interviews

is crucial. I would advise employers to review their

candidate attraction strategies with this information in mind.

I invite you to review our findings and hope that they will

assist in guiding your strategy in the coming months.

Should you require any further information please do not

hesitate to contact us.

Interestingly, mobile apps has moved from being the third most in demand skill in 2015 to sixth this year. Unsurprisingly cloud computing remains at the top of all lists, as in 2015.
